Awesome pair of shoes!!
| Rating: | ![]() |
| I have been mountain biking for years, and until now have been riding with a pair of Specialized El Gato Comp MTB racing shoes. These have been great, but they are very much a stiff racing shoe. When I start getting into single speed mountain biking, I realized that I would need a shoe that would be a little more foot-friendly for those unavoidable hike-a-bikes, yet still compatible with a clipless pedal system. The El Gatos are a great shoe, but I wouldn't want to walk more than 50 yards in them--they weren't totally uncomfortable, but the footing was pretty sketchy. Enter the X-Alp Seek... They are very comfortable for hiking, and without the cleat for the pedal attached, I wouldn't have any qualms with wearing them on a day hike. They are a very durable shoe. Also, the rubber on the sole is fairly sticky and the tread is good and aggresive, so it completely takes out the sketch factor in the footing. They fit the niche for my singlespeed riding very well. They are stiff enough to deliver some decent pedaling performance, yet are not so stiff as a race shoe that they are uncomfortable to walk in. I also love the fact that a mountain bike shoe would come with laces, which allow the shoe to have a very good fit for walking/hiking (I'm a big fan of lace-up climbing shoes, so why not lace-up bike shoes!). I'd still go with a velcro shoe for racing (that is if there even was a choice to be made--the X-Alp Seek is the only lace-up bike shoe that I am aware of.) No product review would be complete without the caveats; Don't expect the orange laces/accents to stay clean for very long, at least if you ride where I do. For some reason, it really picked up dirt quick, like within the first 5 minutes. I imagine that if these shoes were being used for commuting, it might be a slower process, but expect some weathering in any case. But then again, dirty shoes are a mountain biking badge of honor, so wear it well! So, these are my new single speed shoes, and I love 'em. My Specialized El Gatos are now relegated to spin class duty. | |

I Like 'em, | |

| I really like these shoes. I am using them as a road biking shoe with Crank Bros. Candy pedals. This provides a usable platform pedal; there is no urgency to clip in. Clipping in is a little bit tough; unclipping is no problem. I have felt no urge to return to my road bike shoes, in which I do not feel comfortable walking. I tend to bike on paved back roads, and like to be able to walk a bit in my bike shoes. The cleat is noticeable when walking on pavement, and is wearing a bit. They are well ventilated. They would not be suitable as a real hiking shoe or running shoe. Too stiff, and not durable enough. They are not a high performance road bike shoe. But for my every day cycling jaunts they are just the ticket! | |

| I have used these for about the past 6 months, 5 days a week, on my 20 mile round trip bike commute. They are very comfortable, breathable, easy to walk in (depending on the ground surface the cleat crunches against it). Very practical for my commute and my short walk from the bike walk into my office building. I also wear them to lift weights after I ride. Easy to use off the bike to run into stores, etc. I also think the design of the reflective strips is great. Putting them mostly under the mesh keeps them from wearing quickly, but unless lights are shining on them they aren't flashy. And, I like the lace up design with the little elastic strap to keep the laces from falling into the chain. | |

| I was actually trying to buy the X-Alp WRX. I got these accidentally, but when they came I decided to keep them. I wear them on my road bike commuting 5 miles to school and for road rides. Pros: very comfortable, SPD cleats work fine, very breathable, look pretty cool, pretty light. Cons: could be stiffer (but they are a MTB shoe), not at all waterproof (but relatively fast drying), feet get a little cold at night when it's cold out (very ventilated), would like them to be yellow instead of yellow-orangish (to match my bike). All in all a very good shoe that I am happy with and will wear until they're dead. | |

| It's a really good shoe for what I need. I can go cycling for a few hours, then go straight to the pub for a couple cold ones. Or, I can bike down to the waterfront and walk around with no problem. They're stylish and comfortable to hang out in when I'm out on my bike. Size and width seemed true. Cycle-wise, they seem to do their job well, but this is my first pair of clipless so I really don't have anything to compare them to. They claim to be running shoes too, but I would not go for a jog in them. | |

Comfortable, Functionality and Flashy

| Rode these shoe right out of the box with my new mountain bike. Good grip on platform pedals. Two months later I installed SPD pedals and cleats. I haven't pulled out of the shoes yet. Since the bright color bothered me, I took a black Permanent marker and colored over the big bright colored areas and replaced the laces with black ones. One bad thing is the recess in the sole for the SPD cleats are not deep enough, as the cleat slightly contacts the pavement (right shoe) while walking, but not enough to cause any walking hazards. | |

Simply Love These Shoes!

| I absolutely love these shoes! I ride 15-20 miles a day as a commuter, where I often have my daughters trailer in tow, and these shoes give great power transfer. They are comfortable to wear both on and off the bike. I love that I can hop off the bike and navigate stores or run around in the park with my daughter. I could wear these shoes all day long! In fact, the only problem is that I sometimes forget to take them off when I come home. | |

My Sidi's aren't too happy!

| These are the most comfortable cycling shoes I have ever owned. I haven't worn any of my other cycling shoes in the 2 months I've had them. Sizing seems to be on par with the Sidi and Shimano shoes I have. Road, Mountain, and Cross...these shoes do it all. Next month I'll be doing a century (Buffalo Classic} in them too! | |

| I put dr.sholls in the shoes and have been using them as my only pair of shoes, on and off of my bike, for the last 8 months, they are that comfortable. The are well ventilated so you will need some form of covers in cold weather. | |

| Super comfy and great trail grip. Feel secure, but without a strap holding your foot down there is a tendency for your foot to move on the up peddle. Not really a big problem though. | |

Nice concept, poor execution

| I used these shoes on a two-week cycling tour. Unfortunately, in hoping that these shoes could function as both on- and off-bike shoes as they are designed to do, I didn't bring other shoes. These turned out to be extremely uncomfortable over long miles and long hours (they seemed fine when I tried them on in the store), both on and off the bike. I fiddled with the cleat position many times, but invariably within 2 hours of wearing these shoes, the balls of my feet and my toes would be hurting quite a bit, then go numb. I can see how these shoes might be good for light riding/off the bike activity (I'd say 20 miles or less on the bike or 2 or less hours off the bike). They are durable enough for more, but they weren't comfortable for me at all. Next time I tour, I will wear my real cycling shoes on the bike and just bring an extra pair of off-bike Keens! | |

| It's hard for Bigfoot to find bike shoes. I wear a 12.5-13 and this shoe is more like a 12. If it actually fit, I would add a star for each category. Not too into the lacing. I don't really have a wide foot and if the lacing was slightly more forgiving I could possible wear them. I am disappointed that these don't fit otherwise I can tell that they would be a great shoe. | |
