Some changes made, still excellent

This is an amazing product for its size, function, and pricepoint. I have owned both the previous version (elastic headband with emergency whistle) and the current version (retractable cord).

I bought this light intending to store it in a home emergency kit. I soon bought another to put into a backpacking emergency kit.

While I initially balked at the everyday usefulness of a headlamp (I had always used handheld lights) I've learned that it is a very versatile tool that I can carry around with me everyday and it's hard to go back. For quick uses I can turn it on and hold it or just as easily use the retractable cord. I can stand it up on the balljoint base and use it as a stationary light source. The only thing quicker to use and more convenient to carry would be a keychain led (which, generally, aren't as powerful nor as useful). You can stow it safely for a long time with the batteries installed.

When I misplaced the one I carry around with me, I had to have a friend travel to an REI store to get me another - recent shipping restrictions on lithium cells and lack of availability in Hawaii. I was, at first, dismayed to find that the newest model had been redesigned since I loved the old one so much.

I WAS disappointed because there was no longer a weather-resistant carrying case. However, the product is water-resistant already and can be stored with its lens swiveled around to face inwards for storage. Not a problem.

I WAS disappointed to find that the elastic strap has been discontinued as it is far more comfortable than the retractable cord. However, this is not a problem as getting rid of the bulk of the strap has made it easier to transport because of the smaller form-factor. In fact, the retractable cord also eliminates the time required to carefully roll up the headband to stow/fit it back into its case. Time can only tell if the retractable cord, and its mechanism, will be durable.

I am disappointed that there is no longer a signal whistle. Instead of including a cord pull, I think the old emergency whistle could have been repurposed from the headband adjuster to a cord pull.

I am disappointed that there is no longer a wire clip around the balljoint base. I used this to clip the e+lite to my cap or belt while in use and to my backpack/messenger bag strap for convenient carry every day.

Not only do I own several of these, I have purchased more to give away and I will probably continue to do so. They make great, practical, fun, and cool gifts!

Love it!

Love this little headlamp! It looks uncomfortable but it's really not, mostly because the thing weighs less than an ounce (.85oz on my home postal scale). The thin elastic cord is plenty comfy as a headband but you can attach it to anything--your head, your arm, a tent pole, backpack strap, etc. I have super-fine, long hair and the cord doesn't get tangled in my hair at all. Petzl got the tension on the cord just right--it stays on but it doesn't feel too tight either on the head, wrist or arm.
I LOVE that it has a locking OFF position--no more worrying about getting accidentally turned on in your pack. The lamp swivels 360* which turns out to be surprisingly handy, and the red light does preserve night vision.
This isn't the brightest headlamp out there but it may be the most versatile for its weight. It's perfect for camp chores and tent use (also perfect for hostals). And because of the locked OFF switch, as well as its storage longevity and light weight, it's the perfect lamp to throw in your daypack for emergency use.

All You Need for Summer Backpacking

I used this headlamp on my 2012 Long Trail hike this summer (2012), and althought it's not the brightest headlamp out there, it is an excellent choice for those wanting to cut weight. At less than 1 ounce, I found it more than adequate for summer use. In August, I always was in my hammock when it was still light outside, and up at dawn. I only needed this light when nature called and needed to get up in the middle of the night.

It's also great to hang from the hammock suspension directly over me, but under the bugnet. The on/off lever is easy to find in the dark.

The rotating lamp is held to its base with a spring, and I always worried it would come off, but it never did.

This is the only headlamp I could find under 1 ounce; every other one is at least 2.5 ounces. I don't know why anyone would want to carry the extra weight.

Nice little headlamp

I bought mine last August, when it came with a thin headband (instead of a string) and a whistle on the back. I used it on the AT in ME for 2 weeks in early/mid September, including to set up my bearbar a couple of times. Its brightness was fine for my purposes. The main reason I bought it (even though I already had the 3oz Princeton Tec Aurora) is that it is amazingly lightweight (1oz), and the whistle on the back was a nice bonus. I just bought a pair as gifts. Unforunately, they have replaced the thin headband with a string and got rid of the whistle; the savings is just .05 oz (not .5oz!). It also no longer comes with a nice storage case. I am giving 4 stars, because the previous version was better. REI, please get the old version!

Big things come in tiny packages

This little light of mine has a lot going for it.
Very small and lightweight.
Good light output with several settings.
Automatic fit & easy swivel adjustments to point light just where you need it.

The small sacrifice that you must make for such a compact and lightweight item is a little less light output (which would probably be difficult to detect) and a slightly shorter battery life, but a couple spares wouldn't hurt even the strictest ounce-counter's feelings. Both of these things are probably due to the manufacturer choosing the smaller button-shaped battery over AAA, which means that your other devices will likely use a different battery--something to consider when making your final decision.

I am very pleased with this item.

My first choice in headlamps!

I read alot while backpacking, especially at night in the sack. The red light allows for reading without losing night vision, and it doesn't affect your tent mates. The Petzl is also Class I Division 2 rated, meaning you can use it in areas where flammable gases/liquid vapors could be present (like chemical plants - it use the Petzl when I inspect these facilities). The case is watertight, and the weight is nearly negligible. Own 5 of these; never any problems with any of them. Have a half dozen other types, but this is my fav.

Great ultralight lamp for the minimalist

I would call myself somewhat of an ultralight backpacker, and when all you need to do with a lamp is mayde use the restroom at night or cook. One doesn't need the wieght of a highpowered lamp, so this petzl is great for cuttin' pack wieght. It's not the brightest thing in the world but it wieghs less than a ounce and not to forget that the battery lasts FOREVER. Awesome little piece of equipment.
BACKthePACKER at REI on 07/07/2012

really nice

I have the one with more of a headband but this little lamp does the trick for me. I love the light weight, the long battery life, the dim settings and the adjustable angling of the lamp. It is not a long throw light but it'll cover the 6 or so feet of viewing area needed for hiking along an established trail at night. Great for cooking and reading.
