Petzl Microcender -

The very compact and rope-friendly Microcender from Petzl is designed for use in self-belaying on a fixed rope. It does not have a quick attach and release system, but rather is installed on the rope using a removable pin. It completely encloses the rope, greatly reducing the chance of accidental disengagement. The device will slip on the rope if overloaded.

Features:

  • 3-year guarantee
  • CE / UIAA certified; 162 g
  • Axle piece is removable so the device can be installed or removed at any point on the rope
  • For use with single ropes from 9 to 13 mm
  • The pin makes it difficult to remove device from rope involuntarily
  • Pin and axle are attached to the body of the ascender
  • Read instruction manual and warnings carefully before using.
Mountain Gear

Fit the extra-small Microcender ascender from Petzl into a shirt pocket and take it with you. Weighing only 5.5 ounces and able to accommodate a rope up to 1/2, its strength actually exceeds that of most other ascenders, despite its small size.

Good Buy

I use this to top rope solo (ice so far). It feeds smooth as butter with a little bit of weight on the rope; it doesn't take much. It locks off well on short falls. As an ascender, it works well. The keeper leashes mean you can take it off the rope without ever unclipping it from your harness. It is supposedly designed to slip at forces low enough so that the cam won't chop the rope, unlike some other ascenders.

A great design that bites well without the teeth!

I am really satisfied with the Microcender. I purchased it for use as a self-belay device for top rope soloing. It has worked out great for me, it catches without slipping and is nearly foolproof. I also like that it is toothless, this is important for self-belay because toothed ascenders can really hurt the sheath of a rope in the event of a decent fall. I feel completely comfortable using this as a self-belay device.

Reliable device

Works well for solo toprope. Use with a 2ft sling and back-up with a prussik or other rope grab on a slightly longer sling above it. Weight bottom of rope with approx 5lbs or have a partner hold the rope. Remember to carry a rappel device for descending.

Great device, trusted every time.

I've used the Microcender when setting routes on a gym wall along with top rope solo. One of the top reasons I purchased this device was because it doesn't have teeth. Keeps my ropes from getting chewed up.

Great for adjustable lanyard

So I used this to make an adjustable lanyard for when I'm trimming trees. Everything I own from Petzel is solid and well built and this is no exception.

Too small for larger ropes

I use from 9.8mm to 10.4mm and only 9.8 and 9.9 fit in the ascender.

Best price by far

I use it with foot loops to help ascend a rope, it works great.
