  • A fitness test that measures your aerobic fitness at rest in just five minutes. The result, Polar OwnIndex, predicts your maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max ). With the Polar Fitness Test you can measure your aerobic fitness by yourself, automatically and without any exertion. No other equipment other than a heart rate monitor is needed. The Polar Fitness Test is as accurate in predicting the VO2max as any submaximal fitness test. The test is based on gender, age, height, body weight, level of physical activity, heart rate and heart rate variability at rest. The result, OwnIndex, ranges usually from 20 to 95 and is comparable to VO2max, the golden standard of aerobic fitness. OwnIndex is most meaningful when following changes in your fitness over a long period of time. Find out how fit you are for your age and gender by comparing your result to the global references listed in the Polar user manuals.
  • Shows calories burned, duration and time spent in each zone (fat burning or fitness)
  • Polar Fitness Test with Ownindex- calculates the point where the main effect of training is turning fat burning into fitness improvement.

I really like this technology!

4 stars only because it is expensive I think but I do like the technology. I have used this watch for 4 months now. You do have to be a little smart both with computers and in running this device properly. Once you go through the setup this device has helped me watch how my VO2 has improved while my weight has decreased over time. You must manually change your weight which I choose to update on a weekly basis. I also perform my fitness test weekly. I purchased the available weblink device so I can upload to the polar website. (It is called Flowlink which is sold separately and was about [$]) This allows me to see a graph of my progress and label which sports I have been doing so I can look back over time and identify workouts and caloric demands. You must personally set up the website with your own personal sports. This website also is a great resource to help you with workouts if you choose to go that route. I am a physical therapist who has fallen a little off the fitness side since getting older and raising a family. Now I am on a mission! You must really play with this watch to get it set up just the way you like it. I like the display that is on this page display with the heartrate showing and then during a workout I only have to briefly bring the watch near the chest strap and it will change to time quickly so I can see the time of day. Then it reverts back to the heartrate setting. I bought the beige which is easily cleaned with soap and water. The lense has not scratched yet. I only get teased over the display size but these are by non-athletes. Note: You can also attach it to your handlebars during biking workouts. I am trying to work in certain zones and so I like to see where I am with my heartrate but you can set alarms to tell you this.

Love it!

I am very happy with the Polar FT40. I had to order it because the store doesn't stock it in beige and it took two weeks to get. It was worth the wait. Previously, I had used the RS200 but it broke and is now discontinued. This is a good replacement as it has many of the same functions and is also more feminine to wear as a watch while I work as a personal trainer.

I like Polar because if you have owned one, you can easily figure out how to use another and I really like the comfortable chest strap. It is not very comfortable to wear during Yoga classes during certain poses so I would not recommend it for that.

I love this watch

I have done lots of research and decided to buy green one. I just love it, Its easy to use, Its cool looking, so i wear it to work or to go outside. I have been using it for 2 weeks now, It hasnt given me any trouble yet
Except when i put it on, my skin get caught in the loup and hurts. but I can live wth that.
I am using it for my P90x Classic -round2- work outs.
It really motivates me. I keep checking my heart rate.

Awsome for all workouts!

I was able to get this out of the box and to spin class in no time at all. It is versitile, so I can get calorie counts on everything I do: running, spin, yoga, skiing. Accessing the information is a piece of cake. I bought the green one and really enjoy the color. I have tried another brand, this is a keeper.

Very good buy

I use this watch for runs, competitive 5Ks and bike rides. I also have used it just to figure out how many calories I'll typically burn in one day. I'm very happy with this watch for the price. My only complaint is that it doesn't have a stop watch, but it comes through with every other feature.

Negative Reviews:

Good hr monitor until the battery dies

I bought this HR monitor to replace an FT40, which I returned because the battery in that heart sensor's strap was not replaceable. So, after 1.5 years of use, the battery died on both the watch and the strap, and I went ahead and replaced them two months ago. Since then, neither the wrist unit or the strap work well. The readings are inaccurate and the wrist unit takes forever to start showing a reading. I often wait 30 minutes for it to start showing what seems a reasonable heart rate, but I don't trust it anymore.

Buttons Keep Breaking!

I already traded in one of these after 4 months of normal use because the buttons cracked. Now I'm going to have to turn in my second watch after 2 months because the buttons are breaking again! I am nice to my watches. It's really unacceptable for this to be happening! Twice! I'm not sure I want to even try a Polar again.

Neutral Reviews:

I ran with this watch for 6 months

I ran with this watch for 6 months, the heart monitor was great. But the buttons the interface do not have good user-flow, it took a while to get use to using the interface. I got the lighter color straps, they picked up dirt really easily. It was very difficult to keep the watch looking clean. Overall I thought the watch was over priced would have been a better value if the price was lower.
