Princeton Tec Remix Headlamp -

"I'd like to call this little dynamo "girl's best friend" but I can hear my boyfriend in the background yelling, "Hey! I'm not a girl!" This headlamp literally goes with me everywhere. Packing a whopping 70 lumens in both the spot and peripheral range, I think it's the headlamp Frodo used to scare that huge spider away in the third Lord of The Rings movie. The lightweight and tiny design has delivered hands-free illumitation while changing a tire on the side of the freeway AND created impromptu disco-lit dance parties in my darkened living room with the strobe setting. Oh yeah, and my favorite part of the lamp is the red light setting that switches with ease when you hold down the button."

The Remix Headlamp by Princeton Tec is equipped with an asymmetrical single arm bracket, easily accessible battery door enclosure, and large push button switch. This Princeton Tec Headlamp combine these features with a simple & lightweight design and you have a headlamp built to perform in any environment. Versatile light, needs small improvement

I bought the remix to replace an older backpacking headlamp with fewer features. I'm a big fan of the variable brightness settings and single bright bulb versus smaller bulbs to save battery life. I can always find a setting that is right for the situation, and the lowest brightness setting is often all I need.
I have two small complaints: The clip to release the battery cover is very hard to get open, and seems like it could snap off with too much force, and render the headlamp unusable. Also, the headlamp can rotate, but the beam does not point down far enough. This means that even at the lowest angle, the bean can easily shine into other people's eyes and does not light the ground directly in front of me.

Great for stargazing

I took this headlight on a 10 day float trip down the Green River. The stars in Canyonlands NP were magnificent. I was able to use the red light setting and keep my headlamp on while walking from my tent to our stargazing tarp without disturbing others' enjoyment of the stars. During a recent backpacking trip, I can't tell you how many people were blinded by bright white headlamps but no one ever complained about my red light. This was packed in my Otter Box during the float trip and in my hip belt pocket of my backpack and I had a problem with the power switch being pressed into the "on" position. Battery life is long due to the LED option. Very useful for float, backpacking and biking trips.

A lot of light for the price

I bought this light almost a year ago when I went to work doing structural repairs under houses. After more than 10 months of nearly daily use the light has remained bright and still has low power consumption. I store the light with other personal equipment in my backpack and have had very few problems with the light accidently being turned on. It has only happened twice to the best of my recollection.

The only problem I've had with the light is when one of my colleagues dropped a jack weighing about 35 on it and broke the bottom half of one of the retainers, which, obviously, is beyond the normal scope of wear and tear.

This headlamp gets the job done at a low price and is brighter than most.

There is not much to say other than that it does its job well and at this price you can't beat it. The light seems sturdy enough to take a beating but is light and small enough to throw in the pack for all adventures. Similar lumen ratings from other companies will cost double the money and I can't find any other company offering the same burn time within the same price range. I have the red LED version and one strange point is that the red LED's turn on by default and the white LED mode must be switched on. This is not a big deal but it seems a bit backwards.

Great Headlamp

I use this product at work and for outdoor activities (fishing, camping, etc). I love that it is light and comfortable on my head. Being able to adjust from LED's to a spotlight is great too. The spotlight is very bright and the beam reaches far. The LED's do a great job of the batter lasting long but providing enough light to hike and work in pitch darkness. I've had this light for over 2 years and have only changed the batteries once. I highly recommend it! The price is very reasonable for such a quality light. I've purchased three more of these for gifts for my family members.

Finally!

Finally a headlamp with a red LED option--thats bright. If you ever have to night hike in thick fog/mist you will see a major improvement with this red option--you can actually see your feet! My previous Remix has worked great and this newer model has about 30 more lumens (100 vs. 70).

No long term data yet but so far this is my favorite headlamp. The PT Byte was nice and light but has a very dim red LED vs. this one.

PS REI should allow these reviews to be edited by the writer--this allows for long term use updates, etc.

Works great for my use

I've only had this a few weeks but have used it several times in my workshop. And it works great. At night there are dark spots in the shop and this provides the extra light I need to see the details in woodworking. I generally use it on the 2nd level of brightness and that's all I need but it's nice to have two more levels if more is needed. Light weight enough that I can wear it the whole time I'm working. And the simple strap doesn't get in the way of the breathing apparatus, safety goggles and hearing protection gear.

Don't be surprised when all of your friends and nearby strangers fawn over your gadget.

Let's just say I did my research when buying such a tool, and I remain confident to this day that I made the correct decision. If you're looking for a quality, durable, and affordable headlamp, you cannot go wrong with this one. If you're the type that thinks you can get away without buying a headlamp because everyone in your group has one, you're wrong. I knew people of your nature in my group and after our trip they bought this exact one. If you're worried about the extra weight, stop being silly. I love.

Perfect Thru-Hike head lamp

Carried this light for 5 1/2 months on the AT. Only had to change the batteries once. The red light is perfect for anytime you have to get around and don't want to blind anyone. I actually got so used to the red light that I preferred it to using the white ones. Think about it, if you want to read your map a little before you go to bed, the white light is just overkill, switch it to red and now you're not squinting from too much light. Highly recommended.

Better than a lantern

Cross country trip a few years ago we had rechargable lanterns but had difficulty with them. Gave up the lanterns and bought headlamps when we ran across the next camping gear store which happened to be an REI. Now anytime we need light, camping, going to the Drive-in, or power outage we have light thanks to the headlamps and can read without having to share an ineffectual lantern. We are on our second pair of headlamps and worth every penny. (The first pair got lost in a move of house.)

Negative Reviews:

Not so great for backpacking

I'm a backpacker. My last Princeton Tech mini headlamp broke and doesn't seem to be made anymore, too bad because I really liked it.

This lamp has a fatal flaw: the large obvious button turns the lamp on by simply pressing it. That means that it cannot be packed in one's backpack without removing the batteries, because it'll turn itself on every time, and then when you need it, it won't work.

So instead you have to pack the batteries separately and then try to find them and install them in the correct polarity in less than favorable light conditions, which is why you need the thing in the first place, and of course if you do it wrong you destroy the lamp, no warranty and maybe big danger to you, though of course I always carry two headlamps.

My last Princeton Tech had a closed position that completely covered the switch, no problem. My other headlamp turns off by unscrewing the lamp fixture, no problem. This one is a problem. I'm tempted to return it. I just can't believe they designed it like this.

I guess that's the problem with shopping online.

Neutral Reviews:

not as good as the fuel

The remix is disappointing compared to the Fuel and EOS lights. I expect more from Princeton Tec. This light feels flimsy compared to the others. And they made the switch so that it is easily turned on accidentally- a very bad feature in my estimation. Also, I don't really find much of a light difference between the different bulbs. I would just stay with the Fuel/EOS combo that I am using now.
