Top Performer

Rating:*****
Size. I have bmore luggage than I care to admit and I wasn't really happy with any of it. Hardsided. Softsided. Wheeled. Ugh. I bought this duffel a year ago to replace a larger bag I was using on a month-long car camping trip. I got extremely lucky in my choice considering size and durability were my only considerations. Since that first trip, this bag has become my go-to bag. I am a minimalist packer so I find it great for 2, 3 and even 4-week trips. Most people would probably use this for trips of up to a week. It is too big for a weekend pack by anyone's standards. This bag holds a lot of stuff and compresses down to nothing for storage. Plus it is the perfect size for a carry on, so no extra $$ for checked bags!! Handles. Lightly packed, it can be comfortably carried by the single shoulder strap. Solidly packed, this bag is too heavy to carry over-the-shoulder and this is where the backpack feature comes in handy. I have used the backpack feature only once as I tend to also carry a computer daypack. The backpack feature is really only appropriate for short-term transport. The shoulder straps are padded, but if your objective is to walk a short distance carrying everything in one load, it will do. The dual handles with a padded "joiner" strap are nice. If you've really overdone it on weight, you can also carry/pull the bag by the padded end strap. I have drug this thing all over the place. Bag materials and constructon. The bag is made of heavy-duty nylon so it is light and strong. I have drug this bag over carpet, tiled floors, and even concrete and the nylon has never showed the abuse. I have kicked it along with me as I waited in lines at check-in. I tend to overpack the bag and the zippers and seams have never shown a bit of stress. Design is what makes this bag great. It has a piece of plastic covered cardboard to give the bottom some structure. This can be removed. The backpack handles are conveniently zipped away when not in use. The pockets are well thought out and appropriately sized. On car camping trips, I seldom take my bag out of the car, so the two zippered compartments on top were a godsend for stowing toiletries I needed frequently. On airline flights, they keep passports, tickets, cell phone, mp3 player, and a small paperback handy. One of the top pockets has a solid nylon backing and the other is mesh. As I'm not putting anything in the bag wet, the mesh is rather a waste and I would have preferred if it had the solid nylon backing too. But whatever. You can fit sandals or a curling iron in the outside zippered pocket along the body of the bag and hiking boots in the roomy end compartment. I'd buy another if the one I had ever wore out, but I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon. Great bag. Buy one.

Balanced to do it all

Rating:*****
As someone who travels constantly and uses his apartment more for storage than living, this bag has been amazing. The huge capacity is great for trips of a few days in length, yet the bag isn't so bulky that it can't be used for a one or two night excursion. My favorite part is probably the shoe-specific side compartment, so they aren't floating around getting my clothes dirty. The hideaway backpack straps are great at airports or for just freeing up your hands when unpacking the car. The side straps work well for golf umbrellas or tripods, and the zip pockets on the top flap are great for storing miscellaneous items like cameras, phone chargers, Mp3 players, and even magazines or books.

Because the bag is so light for it's size, part of me was concerned that it might not have the durability I was after, but it's been over six months of weekly use and this still looks new. Theres really no complaint I have about this bag except it's maybe a hair too big for basic weekend travel, and thats a stretch.

One serious bag

Rating:*****
I looked long and hard for an alternative to my EagleCreek wheeled back-pack convertasuitcase, and finally found this one. I wanted something that I could collapse and tuck away, and the EC converta has a hard shell around it. I have the impression that someone in the design department at REI wanted a duffel and set out to design one that would not stint on features to reduce cost. This is the result. They pretty much thought of everything.

Most convenient duffle I've had!

Rating:*****
as a senior citizen, I found this bag to be wonderfull. I could grip it by the end handles, use the shoulder strap, or the handles depending on the situation. I traveled to Africa with it using 3 different airlines and had 10 different flights and it came through beaufifully.
I found the pockets very convenient, especially the top one that opened into an interior pocket. Highly recommend it!
