Positive Reviews:

totally worth it

Rating:*****
I used to think that footprints were for people who would rather spend money than spend time cutting out an inexpensive piece of a tarp to fit their tent. I was wrong. It takes much less time to set up than my old hand-cut tarps and it is much more versatile. I take my footprint with me as a lightweight emergency item on dayhikes and it has come in very handy.

Highly Recommended

Rating:****
If you are taking your Half Dome, don't leave home without this footprint. Simple added comfort that will greatly extend the life of your tent by keeping it clean and dry. One side is coated with a waterproofing material. Just remember to follow the instructions and keep the coated side up. Also, this footprint, coupled with the Half Dome rain fly, makes an improvised, lightweight backpacking shelter option for ultralighters.

must-have tent accessory

Rating:*****
This is much more convenient that cutting a tarp to fit. The color coded straps make it easy to get the tent, rainfly and footprint oriented and lined up properly, and the whole thing stays in place even if you need to move the tent while it's set up. The rainfly and footprint only option is nice too.

worth the money

Rating:*****
Worth the extra money. So lightweight that it easily fits into the tent bag. Works well to protect the bottom of the tent from tears and wetness.

Footprint needed? YES!

Rating:*****
The footprint is very handy for setting fly/footprint combo. Who needs bug protection in February? Leave the tent body behind. Supper roomy going with that option.

A must-have

Rating:****
Use ore else your tent could get torn.
Doesn't have a lip around the edge so if it rains, you could still end up wet.

A definite must!

Rating:*****
A must have to go along with your tent... protects the bottom of your tent, keeping you dryer and happier on those "dewy mornings!"

Worked great. Used in the rain, and shed the water from under the tent efficiently

Negative Reviews:

Useful for Fast Packing, Not Necessary

Rating:**
I use the REI Half dome in varied conditions from Joshua Tree deserts to snowy winter hiking at -15F. For the first two years I've brought along the footprint regardless of the season. After that I stopped using it entirely unless I did not the need bug protection of the tent body. My tent has been used around 100 nights and the footprint around 50.

The single best aspect of this footprint is that you can use the Half Dome in Fast Packer configuration. Other than that, it does a decent job of taking the abrasion and dirt that would otherwise end up on the tent body.

Unfortunately when in fastpacker configuration the footprint is simply too narrow for 2 person use. When used this way simply putting my partner's pad and mine next to each other ends up with an inch on the ground.

As a typical ground pad sure it does it's duty but honestly the half dome just doesn't need it.

A quick wipe with a pack towel will clean it off nicely so for most use this is just an extra thing to haul around. If the half dome was a fragile tent I could see using a footprint but it's not. It's got a well designed bathtub floor, quality fabric, quality water repellant treatment and a solid REI policy backing any failures.

If you are camping on incredibly abrasive stuff, you probably should be finding a better camping spot. Failing that, you'll probably still manage to poke that thorn all the way through or wear through both the footprint and tent floor anyway.

With that the case, the one place you need the footprint it doesn't do that hot of a job.
