I LOVE THIS LUGGAGE!
I have both the 22" and 25" in blue that I received a few years ago. They have been on many trips both long and short, by plane, train and car and I have no complaints! I love the look, the storage pockets, the smooth wheels, and the smooth pullout handle that is really comfortable. Even the 22" has a surprisingly large capacity, I was worried at first but I could cram a lot of stuff in it with the expandable lid!
Infact, the 22" was RUN OVER BY A BUS and DRAGGED ~50 FEET and it held together surprisingly well! Some of the stitching came undone around the top handle, and the pullout handle was extended when it was hit so it wasnt able to retract afterwards. But that actually was in our favor since we could still wheel it around instead of having to carry it!
I loved this bag so much I am BUYING IT AGAIN to replace the damaged one. I am disappointed that they dont make it in blue any more. It was such a unique color and made it easy to spot on the baggage carousel. I really dont like the cherry color so I went with the coal. Now it looks like every other black bag...oh well, its worth it.

Great for short trips!
I have travelled nearly every week for the last three months for business. This bag is a great carry-on. It fits in most overhead bins (although it's a little tight if you use the expansion feature). I love the shoe compartment for my running shoes. It keeps them separate from business attire. The clear toiletries bag that is clipped in makes moving through airport security easier. The wheels are great and roll smoothly on every surface I've encountered. The extendable handle has a little play in it if you spin the bag like I do maneuvering through a crowd, but this has not been a problem, just an observation. Overall, this is a great bag. I have loved mine!
Rugged but tippy
Am enjoying this carry-on. I admire the shape and sturdiness. Also the easy access. Rolls well and allows me to move quickly through airports and along sidewalks. Zippers are strong. Was a bit perplexed first time in airport to realize the bag tipped easily onto its front. Kind of a goofy feeling to be standing there, playing with bag to get it to stand on its own. I've since learned to pack heavy stuff at foot of bag, so I can usually get it to stay up as I wait in lines. But for that nuisance, I would give 5 stars. Hope REI is working with manufacturer on that. Perhaps they've made adjustments by now.
this one works
Travel to Europe frequently. The size works, even with winter clothes. I like that it is stable, standing upright when packed and not needing a wall to keep from tipping over. Has come through many flights and train trips with no damage. Pair it with the small carry-on that serves as toilet and valued articles bag and everything rolls together with nothing sliding. Wheels handle cobblestones and steps, like the solid panal up the back that saves the bag from rips and scrapes going up stairs. Handle sturdy, good length and has not bent from use.
Still looks like new!
Last year I purchased the 2008-9 model of this bag and used it on my four month study abroad adventure in Italy. On the way home from this trip I ended up with multiple delays and my luggage was lost in Europe for 2 weeks! Once the luggage was finally delivered to my door-step it looked just as new as the day I purchased it! I was impressed since it traveled through at least 4 major airports, during Christmas travel season. Highly recommend the 22" and 16" model of this bag!!!
Good bag
I use this for brief business trips. It seems well constructed, but I am waiting to see how it wears over time--especially without reinforced corners. Biggest pet peeve--it tips over forwards very easily, especially if carrying even a lightweight laptop.
Excellent Value!
Excellent carry-on even with with the expansion zipper open. Front lower compartment is the best I've found for shoes. Bottle compartment is very convinient.

Failed basic test
Picked this bag up on the fall sale. Nice construction, pretty good design and good capacity for a carry on. Was concerned about reviews that indicated its tendency tip over. Got it home, packed it multiple ways with the weight distributed differently. No matter how it was packed the bagged tipped over with the gentle push of a finger. Returned it the next day.
So notwistanding the positives this bag is a complete failure and frankly I am surprised REI continues to sell it.

tips over :(
The feet underneath the suitcase aren't placed at the four corners. One set is at the midpoint, so it tips over instantly when filled.
I love the design with all the pockets, and it seems sturdy. I could easily envision using it for many years if not for its unforgivable inability to stand upright, rendering it completely unusable.

Nice looking JUNK
FIRST trip handle broke and seams are comming apart! I have owned this carryon for 1 week. I am trying to finish my trip through 4 more airports holding the handle together with a paperclip. Hopefully the seams will stay together long enough for me to make it home. Do not buy this very nice looking suitcase PERIOD.

Bought this bag for a 10-day trip to Costa Rica with Nature Air (Carbon Neutral Airline) that limits baggage to 50 cubic inches and 40lbs. Was disappointed that the retractable handle broke on this first trip.

Heavy Tipper
Usually REI carries superior products, but the Inside Passage 22 in. suitcase has been a disappointment. It was very frustrating to wheel it through the airport and constantly picking it up off the floor when it tipped over. I tried repacking the suitcase thinking the weight wasn't distributed evenly, however, the case still dumped over. It's very heavy to begin with, and I couldn't lift it to an overhead compartment when fully packed. It now sits in the attic.
