4.5, almost perfect

Rating:****
I did a lot of research on footware options that would meet all the rigors of a backpacking trip in canyon country. There have been lots of developments since my last trip that involved wading. I finally settled on these and they performed much better than expected.

The comment about the (I assume) heel strap is valid. It would occasionally loosen but it is designed that it cannot completely come off. The loosening was never to the point of even remotely loosing the shoe, even in 18-in quicksand or river bottom muck/mud. Overall, their performance wading in glue-like sediment and a waist-deep river was exceptional.

Surprisingly, they had great traction on slick rock. They handled free climbs in narrow slots as good as any hiking boot I've used. Although I only used them for a 1-week trip, it defintely tested them (the shorts that I wore were shredded from the sandstone). The shoes appear almost as new--no tears, rips, or major abrasions. They dried perfectly every evening and clean up well too. The toe protection is sufficient for run-ins with unseen rocks in streams.

They don't have any ankle-support, and I wore my hiking boots for the long trip from the trailhead on the bench into the canyon with a fully loaded pack. Once we got into the canyon bottom and the wading started, they handled the pack fine.

Note about socks vs. sockless: I wore them with cheap polypropylene sock liners and sometimes socks (depending on time in very cold water), which worked great. My partner had a different brand/model but similar design of shoe and wore them barefoot. After every stream crossing or wading, she had to stop to get pebbles out of hers. The rest of the trip she also wore socks and didn't have this issue.

A very pleasant surprise

Rating:*****
I bought these shoes along with a pair of backpacking boots at REI in preperation of a week long mountain back-packing trip. I took care to break both pairs of shoes in before departing.
After just one day of hiking, my boots were giving me blisters and I resorted to the Salomons. I was amazed at their performance and used the shoes the rest of the week. I hiked over 40 miles with a 70 lb back pack and climbed 5 mountain passes, each over 12,000 feet in elevation, all while wearing these shoes. They provided great comfort, dried quickly after river crossings, provided great traction on some slippery paths, and I did not get any more blisters the rest of th trip. They totally out-performed my back-packing boots.
The cons are that the back-strap on the shoes are pretty much worthless as they don't hold. I also recommend replacing the factory laces with some real shoe laces to help the shoe fit more comfortably. You might also need to replace the insole if you have high arched feet. Quick drying socks (available at most sporting goods stores) also help these shoes perform much better.
Great shoes for hiking and I highly recommend (and I don't normally like Salomon brand footwear).

Great shoe for being active on the water

Rating:****
I bought these shoes when I was learning to sail. Since small boats are slippery and have a lot of sharp metal brackets and lines, I needed something that was close-toed, had good traction, and was comfortable. Also, I imagined I would spend a lot of time in the water, so I needed something that performed well when wet (stay on snugly, dry quickly, etc).

This shoe performed admirably on all of these requirements, and it looks good, too. The shoelace pouch is a nice detail, as it keeps them from getting tangled or bouncing around. This is definitely the best water shoe I've owned (much more rugged than sandals).

That said, I have a couple minor complaints. The first is that since the shoe is fairly closed, water tends to pool in the front and back. The mesh dried quickly, but the insole takes much longer. Also when the shoes dried completely, they smelled a bit musty. I would hope a shoe designed for water would resist mildew a little better. It's a minor point, though.

Salomon Tech 2 Water shoes

Rating:****
The shoes are great water shoes. I recommend checking out the sizing at a local sporting goods store prior to ordering - it helps. The shoes drain very well, and they are pretty good at keeping debris out. The insoles seem removable, but aren't really. They're glued in, so don't try to pull them out, you can damage them. The heel isn't glued, but up near the toe is. If you have wide feet, these shoes are not the best option. The width is a little snug, and because of that they aren't the best for any kind of duration use. The rear strap is very functional, and it allows for a great ability to snug your foot in and get a "glove like" fit. Very convenient on/off with the ?kevlar? quick laces. Overall, it has all the features of a great shoe, but it's a little hard on someone who has wide feet.

Love em!

Rating:*****
Exactly what I was looking for, a shoe I could hike with on the trails, but also cross and hike in rivers/streams. Took a two mile hike in them and then down into a stream bed for a 100 yards or so with my two dogs. They drain and dry quick. Very comfortable and my orthodics fit in them fine. (I ordered them an extra half size larger (10.5) in the hopes of a comfortable fit for my wide (EE)feet and they fit well. Ecco's and New Balance are my usual brands in a (10). Also used them rafting where I was in and out of the raft to carry and pull 2-person raft through many shallow spots in Boulder creek, ha! Very stoked on them and love the price Sierra sold them for.

Great water shoe

Rating:****
Bought these recently for a backpacking trip to have something other than my boots to wear while not hiking. Traction underwater is very good and they dry quickly. I really like how the back folds down to become a sandal. Very handy for quick on and offs when it is just being worn around camp. The adjustable heel makes a good fit easy to find. I usually wear a 14 but ordered these in a 13 because I thought I would be wearing them without socks while in the water. The 13 ended up being perfect, even with socks I just adjust the heel tension and they fit perfectly.

Only show of their kind

Rating:****
I use these as running shoes in the military. Cross Training with them to break them in but they still hurt. I had a pair before and put the SOLE insoles in them to keep them but they stank from running in the ocean water. Previous pair was awesome longest lasting shoe I have ever owned. Great shoe for someone who travels. If clip on back was better they would fit better as a running shoe. Ran 50 mile marathon on these and then kept them for 2 years shoes last forever.

Sharp,Comfortable,

Rating:****
I really like these shoes. I bought them after I got some for my wife, and liked the construction of hers. Good looking, cool, comfortable w/ & w/o socks. They are easy on & off in the airport. We got these for our trip to Kauai, wandered on the beaches and around shopping & the sights & on a boat. Didn't slip at all. Easy on the feet. Single caveat...Adjustable strap does not stay snug...the shoes don't come off, just loosen. Hence the insecure comment.

Different, Comfy

Rating:****
I bought these shoes to use when rafting but haven't used them in the water yet. They're really light, fit well, comfortable and are very breathable. This makes me think they'll be quick drying and good in a raft. A little cumbersome to take on off since you need to tuck the laces in the tongue pocket, but the speed laces are still far superior to any other laces I've used.

Best water shoes I've worn

Rating:****
I bought them for boating. Boat ramps can be brutal on the feet (not to mention broken glass). The water shoes I was buying in the store were slippery on the trailer, had no support, were constantly filling with sand, and would fall apart after about a weeks wear. So even though I have only worn these twice so far they are already 100% improvement

Negative Reviews:

Great Shoe but strap ruins functionality

Rating:**
I planned to use these shoes for kayaking and backpacking where crossing streams would be necessary. Truthfully, I love this shoe for so many reasons. They're light, comfortable, and I love the fact that they wear much like a shoe rather than a water sandal which makes them versatile. But the rear strap renders them useless. If you wear them for more than a few minutes the strap slips easily. The shoe is no good if you can't keep it tight around your feet. Unfortunately, I'll be returning these.

Stinky, stinky, stinky!

Rating:*
I got these on sale and I appreciate their traction and the fact they drain easily. These are better than Crocs and feel like normal running shoes in the water. However, once you use them in the water (I kayak a lot), they will produce a stink of biblical proportions! I cannot get the funky smell out, no matter what I try. I have to tie them to outside of my SUV on the way back since they smell so bad.

Shoes unusable due to foul odor!

Rating:*
Great comfortable shoe, but completely unusable due to funky odor once they got wet. I used them kayaking in lakes and rivers and they quickly stunk so back I had to keep them outside of the house. Even soaking various cleaners overnight couldn't get rid of the funky stink. I ended up getting neopreme shoes that don't retain the stinky water bacteria

Slightly Disappointed

Rating:***
I was expecting a much more comfortable shoe. Hopefully they will wear in and be better. I used them for kayaking and they worked but they didn't provide the support I was hoping for. I left them in my truck overnight and they were still wet. Anyway I was expecting more for the price and the brand.
