"You can't even make it a day without good footwear. That's why my favorite item purchased when I hiked the Pacific Crest Trail was far and away a pair of Solomon XA PRO 3D shoes. During the about 700 miles they lasted, the mid-sole protected like a hiking boot, and the shoe, well, it wore like a comfortable tennis shoe. The XA Pro 3Ds are light, tough, and durable (other than the speed laces), and the contra grip was sticky on all the different trail terrains I hiked."

Gearx

The XA Pro 3D is Salomon's most iconic and versatile trail running shoe. Its comfortable fit, flexibility, and less aggressive tread allows it to run triple duty as a running shoe, hiking shoe, and everyday shoe. Compared to the other models in Salomon's trail running line, the XA Pro has hard-object impact protection (i.e., a rock shield) over the greatest area of the foot -some models just have it under the arch, but the XA Pro extends it under the ball of the foot as well. Other models also have more aggressive tread and heel brakes, which are a double edged-sword; they work great when moving fast on soft ground and downhills, but wear out more quickly on hard surfaces and feel funny on the floors and pavement which we spend most of our time on. The XA Pro is comfortable to wear on these surfaces, and yet so capable off-road that it is the choice of many Appalachian Trail through-hikers.

Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra for backpacking!

Oftentimes we hold onto preconceived notions like they are rote fact. For a long time the conventional wisdom has been that you must wear heavy duty, high-top boots when you are hiking or backpacking, especially in rugged terrain. And for some people, this is probably true. But not everyone. I am a lightweight guy (5'10"/155 lbs) and for summertime backpacking I have all but thrown out my clunky hiking boots in favor of lightweight trail runners. The trick is to find a shoe with either a full, or at least 3/4 length, hard plastic plate running through the sole of the shoe, usually either nylon or urethane. This is what gives your shoes the extra support you need to accommodate the weight of a pack on your back, and also protects the bottoms of your feet from jagged rocks. The Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra has a 3/4 length plate, which means it runs from the heel to the ball of your foot, but not under your toes. There are a few different lightweight trail shoes out there with a urethane plate, but these Salomons are my favorite so far. I hiked the entire AT in these shoes (2200 miles in 130 days), hiked the Colorado Trail in them (450 miles in 25 days), have done Class 3 14ers like Longs Peak, innumerable trail runs, etc. They're absolutely great, and I no longer have any use for full-size boots unless there's snow on the ground. Now, that being said, I rarely carry a pack heavier than 40 lbs (usually 25-30). If you're the type of guy that likes to carry an 80-liter pack stuffed to the gills, with your trusty dutch oven hanging off the back, low-top trail runners may not be right for you. Similarly if you're overweight, or have a propensity for sprained ankles, etc. But don't shy away from them just because of dogmatic conventional "wisdom" about boots and backpacking! Lastly, I would not recommend going with the GTX, especially for multi-day hiking. I'm assuming you're wearing these in warm weather, and if you're wearing low-tops in the summer then they're going to get wet no matter what - whether it's sweat from your own foot, rain water trickling down your legs and into your shoes, stream water coming in over the sides, whatever. But the regular (non GTX) versions breath WAY better, and therefore will dry out much faster and be much more comfortable to wear throughout the day. Wide feet, take note - this shoe is also offered in a wide size, although not every retailer carries it.

All around good shoe.

This is my second pair of Saloman trail-running shoes so part of this review is based on my past experience with them.

My old pair:
These were some of the more comfortable shoes that I have ever owned and they are excellent for doing just about anything. I spent an entire summer wearing these on 4 miles of commuting to work (on foot or bike depending on the weather), as well as all of the time that I spent in a biology lab and at our field sites, and even at the gym and on trails with the dog every evening. Basically, I gave these a run for their money and they really came through for me.

The problem was that they wore out very quickly. The tread on the ball of my foot went first (I run and walk on the balls of my feet). Despite this, I still use these for field work and I have never had problems with walking on trails and really rough terrain and sometimes even in rivers. The other problem was that one of the pull laces broke at a grommet although is still functional.

The new pair:
These seem to be better constructed. The pull-laces seem hardier, as do the traction and the fabric at the back of the shoe. They are just as comfortable although they do need some time to break in before using for strenuous field running. And the best part, they are still just as comfortable.

I am hitting the "I would recommend this to a friend" button with one condition, be prepared to not have these shoes last for a long time.
Crawford at REI on 04/04/2011

The style got me interested in trying the shoe as it has a great technical appearance along with the Quiklacing. I bought the shoe wanting to try the Quiklacing system. As it is not perfect, however, I do prefer it over the cumbersome laces. One pull to adjust the tightness depending on the situation. To loosen the tightness is to press the fastner and slightly loosen the cable and done. It's much faster than re-tying and getting it just right.
Although comfort of a shoe depends on how well the shoe fits a particular foot but fortunately it works for me. The shoe support for me is not too stiff nor flimsy. It provided me a good balance of support between hard and soft whether I was running over a rocky and hard surface or running up a steep mountain which was dry hard packed. I go on fast pace hikes that are about 3 hours long and there have been no issues of pinching, rubbing, spot tightness, etc.
I gave it a 4 star rating since I personally felt it was a great product but not an absolutely perfect in every aspect. The lacing becomes slightly loose after awhile and I would have to give it a slight pull to re-adjust.
Pros
+ Quiklacing system
+ Comfort - toe room, heel, arch, upper
+ Design & Style
+ Quality
Cons
- Quiklacing not perfect
- No improvement change from previous

I wore these on the Appalachian Trail during my thru-hike. My first pair lasted almost 1,000 miles! My second pair, 600; my third pair, 400, and my fourth pair is still with me with some 350 miles and counting. The reason they die is the foam side wall detaches from the rest of the shoe; when this happens, the inner stitching breaks and then your toes poke through or branches jet in.
I bought a size larger for the thru-hike as my feet were always swollen. Also, NO-GORETEX, these bad boys would dry from soaken wet to bone dry in only a few hours of wear, or after an hour in the sun. Goretex versions take much longer to dry, and when it is really raining, your feet are gonna swim, you can count on that, regardless of gtx or not. Might as well give them an advantage when it comes to drying out. I confidently say that 9/10 thru-hikers agree.
Also, the lacing system never slipped, not once out of all four pairs. The lacing system is bomber and when it's so cold you can't even make a fist, you'll be glad all you have to do is tug with one finger on these guys to set them tight rather than tie a knot. NO SLIPPAGE EVER! Salomon rules.

Good Comfortable Shoe

I've had these shoes a month now. I was looking for something other than a atheletic/running shoe or work boot for work and everyday use and wanted a light weight hiker type boot or shoe. Salomon has always made great boots and I'd heard that the fit was very good too. I like the light weight of these. They fit just right and don't have a lot of slop. My work is inside and outside. I'm in and out of houses everyday in dry weather and wet. At first wear they were not very comfortable and needed more arch. I worked in a set of the Surefit insoles and they only got worse (way too hard). I've changed to a heat moldable insole and now the shoes are perfect for fit. I like the lacing system too. As for traction on dry/wet terrain inside and out, the shoe really sticks to the ground well and will trip you up if your not mindful. You will get used to it. The only type terrain these shoes don't like is smooth wet/damp surfaces like tile and terrrazo. They will creep and slip on you. Otherwise, I like the shoe and would recommend it to others. Back in 6 months to follow up.
tman1962 at REI on 05/05/2011

great shoe

The fit of the shoe is true to its size. I'm a size 12 in every other shoe and thats what I got. The lacing system is a little different to get use too but after a few times you learn to get the perfect fit. I was a little concerned about the heal lock on the shoe at first but after a few trail runs it is no problem. I've never had a blister, hot spot or any soreness from the shoe during runs/hikes. I live in New Mexico so I run in very rugged terrain. My last run was exceptionally brutal but I never even thought about my feet. The stability on the mixed terrain was superb. Never slipped and never even came close to rolling an ankle. These are now my favorite shoes for running and day hiking. i'd almost even consider doing an overnighter in them even tho I'm avid about having ankle support when backpacking. We'll see what happens when weather warms up enough. Superb shoe and I would and will defiantly buy again. I don't think I could go back to anything else after having these.

Great shoe but wears quickly

I love these shoes, and although I returned the 1st pair due to ridiculous early wear (the bottom lace holder broke and the tread at the ball of the foot was totally gone after just 6 months) I got a 2nd pair and they fixed the bottom lace holder so its tougher. Unfortunately, the tread still wears way too quickly. Its gone at the ball of the foot again and its been about 8 months this time. I wore them Warrior Dash in Minnesota, and they cleaned up nicely. I wore them to the BWCA and the dry quickly and worked great running the trails with a pack. These are shoes I wear every day. They are super comfortable, and like second skin (I do have narrower feet, so the comments about width are likely valid, but you can't blame the shoe...why would you buy them if they felt too narrow when you tried them on?)

Even with the early wear issues, I will likely buy another pair when these are done. Advice to Solomon though...use tougher rubber for the treads.
MplsBackpacking Dad at REI on 12/12/2011

Unbelievably good.

Used three pairs of these for my '12 AT thru hike. Wonderful shoe, never had any blisters (think about the gravity of that statement). They fit like a glove, are very lightweight, and AMAZINGLY breathable. As someone with sweaty feet, feeling the wind inside your shoe is awesome.

I immediately swapped the soles out with SuperFeet, so I can't comment on the original soles. The shoes seemed to cushion reasonably well, but if you need more cushion look elsewhere or add special soles.

After a few hundred miles, I found them to lose their grip pretty substantially, but I don't think this is unusual.

All in all, I got about 700 miles out of each pair. When my current pair breaks down, I'll probably buy another.

I gave the shoe 4/5 stars because I think that there are some spots of wear on the shoe that maybe went before they should have.
Tim 1 at REI on 03/03/2013

So I figure I'd write a review on these finally...considering i've owned three different pairs of this exact shoe. These babies fit my feet perfectly!! But not just mine, I havn't heard of anyone's they don't fit. I bought my first pair of these before going to an SAR school for a year...this included many LONG hikes with a pack anywhere from 35-50lbs. Never once got blisters! In fact I havn't had blisters with these since I have had them. I mainly use them for backpacking trips and some trail running. I'd say the best thing about these shoes is the fact that they last through some pretty strong abuse, and have a ton of foot room in the toe box. They are also very true to fit.
I'd recommend these to anyone and everyone, simply no other shoe compares.

Great shoe for long distance backpacking

I wore these shoes for my 2012 southbound thru-hike of the AT. I went through 3 pairs of the Salomon XA Pro 3D 2s, averaging about 1 pair every 700 miles on rough terrain(Thats a pretty good distance for footwear on the AT). These shoes have a wider than normal toe box which fit my feet perfectly, as I have a wide forefoot. The ventilation of the XA Pro 3D 2s is great too as my feet rarely got sweaty, and when my shoes got wet they would dry out within an hour or two of walking. However, the insoles that come with the shoe are thin, flimsy, and do not chushion very well, so I had to replace them with Superfeet. A great shoe overall for day hikes, long distance hikes, or just casual wear.

Negative Reviews:

5th pair of Salomons - declining quality

The pros are this is a very lightweight, comfortable shoe, agile shoe for everyday wearing as well as light hiking, biking, running and exercise. In terms of what you get, it's not unlike the great comfort experience of this shoe's Salomon predecessors.

But my main gripes about this particular shoe are the:

Squeaking shoes: The superfeet support insert does not fit properly because of this Salomon's excessively protruding footwell seam which causes the superfeet to compete for that space, and the ill fit causes really loud squeaking in this shoe upon every footfall. I have 2 pair and it happens in both, and tried a 3rd at REI and had the same thing happen, with 2 different sets of superfeet, so that's what led me to the design flaw conclusion.

Eyelet attrition: The Z-lace eyelets are not made of solid nylon or metal, instead they are made out of a thin turn of nylon cordage, which means that the Z-lace itself will slowly cut through those eyelets like a saw (via abrasion) over time. This essentially means that this shoe was designed to fail early and often by design. For such an expensive shoe, this is unacceptable.

Having said that, the eyelets that end up wearing the most are an indicator of the most stressed areas of the foot during your gait / activity. So having that as a metric is the silver lining; too bad you have to sacrifice your shoe to get that data.

Heelsaw : the heelcup is a nylon shield draped in some cheapish foam and covered by a fragile thin mesh of their webbing material. This wears excessively early in the heel like so many others (go to a garage sale and you'll see this flaw glaring at you from so many sad dead salomons). So it's a trend now, to make things bad on purpose so the wear early and have you buying another. This shoe is bad and salomon is bad because of bad shoe.

Other things to mention- if you run on concrete or asphalt, the tread wears very quickly. A good cobbler can actually trim and replace the bottom with a sturdy vibram sole intended for a hiking boot at less than half the cost of a new pair of salomons so it's worth it.

Although this will significantly increase the weight, the shoe still works way better than most shoes and will last much much longer (years versus months). For hiking, it's still a very comfortable shoe while it lasts.

Poor choice for duck feet and wide feet

Frankly, I'm not sure why Salomon makes the wide (M+) version of the XA Pro. The XA Pro may be a nice shoe for folks with narrow feet, but it isn't worth a second look for those with a wide foot or wide forefoot.

First, the good stuff: this is a very nice looking trail shoe!

Having compared the wide and regular XA Pro side by side, there isn't much of a difference between the two beyond a slightly wider heel counter. The forefoot and midfoot are nearly the same size. On my foot, the only functional difference was that the wide XA Pro had a lot more heel slip than the regular width.

The kevlar lacing setup introduces other problems, especially for someone with a wide foot or wide forefoot. Since you can't control how snug each part of the foot is, you risk pinching some parts of your foot to lockdown others. Even if you remove the kevlar and install regular laces, the lack of an extra set of eyelets makes it impossible to loop lace. It's a neat gimmick and it might work on some feet, but it isn't adaptable. I wasn't able to get a solid fit without pulling the laces tight to the point of pain.

Doesn't take orthotics very well. Superfeet Green are out of the question. Even Superfeet Blue were too big and wide. Heavily trimmed orthotics may work.

Unfortunately, these are going to have to go back- and with it, my 20% off discount.

Disappointed

First of all, let me start by the things I liked about the shoe. It looks great, has a solid construction and seemed to be quite comfortable, at first.

After a few runs, I noticed a little heel slippage, which with a traditional lacing system, is an easy fix. However, the problem lies with the Kevlar® Quickfit™ lacing system. The inability to adjust or loop and generally being stuck with too loose or too tight of a fit without being able to customize the fit with the laces, is where this shoe fails.

After developing heel blisters on both feet, I still used them for a while, since I'm of the school of thought that good heel calluses are great for running, hiking, etc. I gave the shoes a more than adequate breaking in period and instead of improving fit and comfort, the problem not only persisted, but got worse.

The overall construction is great, but until Salomon changes their lacing system, I believe I've bought my last pair of running shoes from them.

Toe box is too narrow for a

Like other reviewers, I found the "wide" shoe too narrow. I bought a half size larger than I normally would based on comments about the size running small. I'd agree since the length was about right with the larger shoe. The width would have been okay for my forefoot, but the toe box tapers rather sharply. I could feel the ribbed upper on the sides of my toes wearing thin socks and just walking on a carpeted floor. I'd end up with blistered toes on even a short walk, so these shoes are going back. I like the Solomon speed lace system so I'm disappointed that "wide" doesn't fit. If the store had the wide shoes to try I'd test a full size larger, but I suspect that wouldn't work. The wide section of the forefoot would shift forward and suspect I'd have just as much toe contact.

Seemed comfortable . . . until I ran

First off, I bought these as light hikers/trail runners. I put in about 15 miles a week on roads, and then do one 6-7 miler on trails, and these shoes are what I was hoping would be a good trail shoe. I have several pairs of shoes that I rotate (mostly Asics, but others as well - and even a pair of older Salomons that are still holding up), and these are the only pair that have ever irritated my instep. They felt great in the store, and fine for a good break in walk in the park, but trashed my instep on the first 7 mile trail run I did. And I generally have "iron" feet, and very rarely get blisters or hot spots.
Just letting people know - hopefully they'll work for you, but I had to return mine.

Lousy insoles

This was my fourth pair of these shoes and I've always given them rave reviews. I ran he second half of a 50 mile run in them and had no complaints until this pair. Ran in them 2 times with no woes, then ran on Berryman Trail. First water crossing the insoles started bunching up. Both shoes did this. They bunched under the toes and made it impossible to continue. They seem to be very thin. Need to be stiff to keep from doing this. Want these shoes to work but I sense Salomon is now catering to the Eddie Bauer crowd (yes they sell them now) instead of the trail runners. Without proper insoles these will not function as trail runners.

Salomon should stick to Skis

I'm living in Afghanistan at moment and picked these up at the advice of a friend. I must say that these our some of the worst trailrunning shoes i've owned. I run extreme trails and these shoes just don't cut it. The traction is very poor causing me to slip on most rocks, especially if the sole gets wet. The sole also wears out very quickly. The lacing system, although being very easy to lace, does not give you stability you need. The shoes look good and our comfortable but not for trail running or hiking in extreme conditions. The shoe will be returned as soon as I get back to the states.

2 Year Warranty Should be 2 Day

While the shoes looked good and were comfortable. I wore them about 5 times. I would say the only real hard day I had on them was a day of walking around the city. I took them off and not only was the mesh fabric frayed, but the heel of the tread had started to separate from the soul of the shoe. I could see this being wear and tear after hiking in them and having them catch on rocks, logs, etc. But as I said, they were worn on concrete and asphalt and this happened.

Too narrow!

At first these shoes felt very comfortable. After wearing them around the house a couple times I started feeling like they were too narrow for my feet. I thought I would give them a chance before I took them out on the trail. Just wearing them around outside running errands,I started having pain through the middle of both my feet. It has become too uncomfortable and I will be returning them. They are too narrow for wide feet people even though they are called 12 wide!!

Poor build quality

Went through 2 pair of these in less than a year. Both pair fell apart in the same exact place: The sole separated from the shoe near the toe protector. The cushioning is super comfortable out of the box, but wears out within a couple of months.

A real shame since these were one of the most comfortable trail running shoes I have owned, but they just dont hold up.

Neutral Reviews:

Ordered these after speaking with one of the BC gear specialists. Been looking for something to replace a pair of shoes which I'd worn out. Unfortunately, I have size 14 feet (not wide though). So it's difficult to find what I'm looking for.
Anyway, ordered these to try as I was told they should be fine in a 14 and they carry them in a 14. I liked the way they look so I figured I'd give them a shot. Unfortunately, these things run a LOT smaller than their listed size. They were much too tight. So I had to send them back.
Actually found them locally and they had a 14 wide and I figured I'd try that out. These, too, were too tight. Again, I don't wear a wide shoe but these were much too tight.
I do like the way they look though (although not all of the colors).

This is a very nice heavy weight take you anywhere trail runner that fits great and has piles of good qualities you can read about in other reviews. However, if you sweat even the slightest bit this is not the shoe for you. During the warm time of year this shoe will quickly fill with sweat and since there is no mesh on the lower portion of the shoe, the sweat is there to stay. You can actually fill this shoe a quarter way up with water and it will not drain. So if you live where it's always cool and dry this shoe is great for its intended purpose but if you live anywhere that the temperature gets over 80 stay away.

Comfortable shoes, but I wore holes in them after two months of casual hiking and dog-walking.

I purchased these shoes because I was looking for a long-lasting pair of shoes that also were comfortable and supportive as I have a previously injured ankle. I used them for approximately two months walking or hiking with my dog daily, anywhere from 1-7 miles or so. I was saddened when I found two half-dollar sized holes in the interior lining of both the left and right shoe. I went to my local Moosejaw shop and turned them in for warranty, but it has been about a month now with no word. These were great shoes...when I got to wear them. Unfortunately, I paid good money for them to sit on a shelf somewhere waiting to be returned or exchanged.
zachery at Moosejaw on 01/14/2013

very comfortable, and they have held up well (durable).
likes:
light, well ventilated, good fit
dislikes:
cable-lacing system works, but is gimicky and doesn't really provide much of a benefit over traditional laces. sole/lug pattern is very shallow and provides only mediocre traction. under heel the shoe is padded and protected from below. but under forefoot and front foot the shoe is very thin and offers almost no protection from objects you might step on. Why just the heel?
I've relegated these to around-town and now use Montrail Mountain Masochists for real trail running
and I'm experimenting with Vibram KSO Trek Sports. If you are going to give up on protection from below, you might as well go all the way.

Too Much Arch Support

Very nice looking and well built shoes. Unfortunately they have REALLY aggressive arch support which makes them unwearable for more than a few minutes. I wore them to the gym once and it was tolerable. Next day tried to use them for a long walk and was in agony after about 15 minutes. These shoes make it feel like you are hiking on ladder rungs. Deal killer.

Okay on the trail

While these are great on the trail, protecting you from all sorts of unpleasantness like rocks, they are horrible the minute you step off onto a paved surface. The lacing system takes a lot of trial and error to get the right tightness and they require a good bit of break in.
William27 at REI on 07/07/2011
I loved the look of this shoe, but found the arch support was too aggressive -- the pressure became uncomfortable after wearing them for just a short time, so I had to return them. I have worn Merrell and Patagonia hiking/trail running shoes without having any similar problems.

Lean and light

I love the fit for my low volume feet. They are light. I am unhappy the sole on one heel has peeled loose way too soon.
