Salomon XT Wings 3 -

The XT Wings 3 sits on the "pure trail shoe" end of the Salomon line. Its aggressive, directional tread and deep heel brakes make it one of the best choices for those who are running fast over soft ground, although it does not take to pavement as well as more neutral shoes like the XA Pro or XR Mission.

The midsole of the XT Wings features a medial post, which is a column of dense foam just under the inside arch of your foot. This post helps prevent your foot from rolling inward with each step, which is helpful for those with high arches or pronation problems. Not so much for those with flat feet or people who suponate when they run.

The outsole of the XT Wings features two different densities of Contagrip rubber, with Contragrip LT (light weight) across most of the sole and Contragrip HA (High Abrasion) for durability on the rearmost part of the heel and the inside of the forefoot.

Great all around trail shoe

I recently used these shoes for a Rim 2 Rim 2 Rim run through the Grand Canyon. After 15 hours, 50 miles, and 21K feet of elevation change, I only had one small blister on my right heel. Otherwise, my feet felt great and the extra cushioning provided the comfort needed on the downhill parts of the run.

The tread on the shoe worked fine, the quick lace system is fantastic, and the extra protection on the toecap came in handy.

I usually run in a more minimalist type of shoe, but on runs over 30 miles I prefer a shoe like the x-wings that have a little extra support and cushioning.

Currently, there are many companies making great trail shoes, but Salomon is definitely one of the best. If you enjoy trail running then you should give Salomon shoes a try. Don't be dissuaded by the price, the quality of the product is worth the few extra dollars.

Well Constructed

The shoe has great features with toe guard, venting, but tight mesh not allowing dirt in, great grip, lots of control at heel keeping shoe under foot when on angled surfaces, but very flexible at front of foot and good feel under front of foot. The shoe does seem a bit tight, but really keeps out rocks and well controlled, the footbed is one of the best I have ever felt, no need for orthotics. I am actually moving to minimalist shoes for running, but use this for hiking / walking to keep my volume up. The grip descending is very good, and comforts your feet, much better than my trail gloves in that respect, so these definitely have their place in my casual fitness mix of hiking and trail running.

love them

bought these shoes for trail running at garden of the gods and other locations in IL's shawnee national forest. they fit and felt great right out of the box. took them on a 10 mile run the first day and they performed great. i will update this review once i log somemore miles on them, but i have used salomon shoes for about 6 years, so i pretty much know what to expect(the best). these new xt wings doesn't seem to be a exception.

as for rei, great service as always. got them in 2 days with the free shipping option. shoes seemed to be free from defects.

Great shoe and helped my foot problems from wearing Nike shoes for so long. Nike shoes were making my toes feel like they were going to fall off. Between the Nike Free and Air Max I have rolled my ankles so many times that I was just done with them. My first test for these shoes was at 8100 feet hunting in the mountains of Arizona. My feet felt great and no pain in the toes. I hiked around the mountains for 3 days and not once did I roll my ankles. Great shoe.

An Excellent Shoe

I wear the shoes daily, and have a long history of using Salomon shoes. These are the trail running version without the Gor-tex liner. They're great for dry weather, not so useful for other stuff. They are lighter weight than previous similar models. I love the lacing system.
Charliec63 at REI on 03/03/2013
These shoes are extremely comfortable. They are my third set of XT Wings. They are my first non-gortex pair and I love them. They seem more breathable but definitely less waterproof! Shipping was fast and my entire order went as expected.

Good traction and light weight

I picked these up as my first pair of official trailrunning shoes and they have been a great addition to my weekend runs. Very good balance between traction, cushioning, and overall weight.
JD the trailrunner at REI on 04/04/2013

Amazing shoes, used them for the first 460 miles of the AT (Springs to Damascus) and have zero complaints other than I wore them out!

S. Lee at Backcountry.com on 09/24/2012
Good arch support, good tightening to keep heel from slipping, superlative sole for running/scrambling on rocks.

These are so light it's ridiculous, they are comfortable and perfect for cross training.
