Shimano SH-TR31 -
The right tool for the job.

Let's say that after years of road racing, you're attempting your first triathlon. Training for three disciplines is brutal on your body, but it's equally hard on your budget. As a result, you might be tempted to use your ultra-rigid, buckle-secured road shoes for the bike leg of the race. However, before you do, consider the comfort that you'll add, and the seconds that you'll subtract from your time, by investing in the Shimano SH-TR31 Shoes. They're lightweight, lightning-quick to pull on and adjust, and compliant enough to keep your feet fresh for your run without sacrificing any power transfer.

It seems cliché to say that races can be won and lost in the transition stages, but this often proves true. With a large pull tab at the heel and a single strap over the instep, the SH-TR31 is more akin to a slipper than a shoe. Additionally, the fact that the strap secures towards the inside of the foot allows you to hook the shoes up to your bike, jump into them, start pedaling, and then strap up--without having the strap crash into the spinning crankarms. Resist the temptation to scoff -- with practice, these are easy seconds to gain on the competition, and easy seconds are hard to come by over the course of countless kilometers of suffering.

Shimano gave the TR31 shoes its normal last (or shape), ensuring that the fit is snug to reduce the possibility of hot spots. And the lightweight, fiberglass-reinforced polyamide sole transfers power to the pedals, without being so rigid that it causes numbness and discomfort that can escalate into serious pain when you start running. The upper of the TR31 is made of tough, stretch-resistant synthetic leather, and generous moisture-control mesh inserts provide plenty of breathability for hot summer days. Plush, seamless fabric lines the inside of the shoe to ensure sock-free comfort.

The Shimano SH-TR31 Shoes are compatible with three-bolt cleat designs, as well as two-bolt SPD pedals when paired with Shimano's SM-SH40 adapter. They come in whole sizes from 36-52 and in the color White/black.

Great Tri shoes

The other reviewers comments are totally bogus.

I own these shoes and they are great....for Triathlon. The strap design is reversed to allow you to unbuckle the shoes as you are riding into T2, otherwise when you open the strap it would open into the drivetrain of the bike. This is designed correctly and well. I've worn these for several races and numerous training rides and have never had a problem with the straps. I think if your straps are getting caught in the chainring you are having issues with proper fit or cleat adjustment/positioning.

Overall this is a great product. It is the entry level Shimano Tri Shoe. It works great and is comfortable barefoot for Olympic distance (haven't tried for 50+ rides yet). Strap is easy to operate and keeps your foot secure.

If you are looking for a general road biking shoe I would try the Shimano R086. If you are looking for a commuter shoe I would try a recessed SPD shoe (a MTB shoe) as these are designed for comfortable walking and still perform really well.

Simple and effective

I am a recreational triathlete and as such I needed a basic race shoe without all the bells, whistles and cost of the top of the line triathlon cycling shoes. The TR31 works as advertised. Easy on and off during a race and fits comfortably for all ride distances. The construction is very durable and I'm guessing the velcro will eventually be the only part to wear out. A basic triathlon cycling shoe which meets all my needs. I'm a satisfied customer and would recommend it for any recreational or beginning triathlete.

Great shoe for all uses

I got these shoes when I started road riding 3 years ago and have used them for a tri, countless commuting miles, and pretty intense training for a double century next week. I rode a solo 130 mile ride last week and the only parts that didn't hurt were my feet. I cut the end of the straps off so they stopped rubbing, and they have been care-free ever since. I have just been given no reason to get regular road shoes. No regrets at all.

Good Triathlon Shoe

This is a great triathlon specific cycling shoe. The fit is very true to size, with a very comfortable upper and lots of venting and drainage.
The strap is awesome - Shimano designed the strap to be custom cut to length - it stays out of the way of the drivetrain when undone, and securely closed when pulled shut.

This is a great shoe that I would definitely recommend to fellow triathletes.

Great shoes - very comfortable and light. Good bit of bang for the buck. And of course Zappos makes the shopping experience 5-star. They are very comfortable - I've been using them for my regular road rides (not just for Tri's) and haven't had any issues yet. Bought the size based on the Shimano sizing chart and it seems perfect (a size smaller than my Mountain Bike shoes).

Love the shoes. If you have wide feet, as I do, these are extraordinarily more comfortable than traditional, multi-strap bike shoes. Obviously they are easy-on, easy-off, which is great for transition, as well. Very happy with them.

This is a great comfortable bike shoe for the aspiring workhog wannabe pro. Looks terrific on and as though I really know what I am doing with a twist-off bike shoe.

Awesome shoes. They work like a charm, they are light and very well built. They are a great upgrade from my previous shoes.

Negative Reviews:

Not Recommended

These are good shoes except for the fact that the single reverse-strap easily starts to become undone and will rub the chainring and crank every rotation. This can be annoying and distracting at minimum, and potentially dangerous at max. In general, the ends of the straps become greasy from the chain and worn from the rubbing. This happens very quickly. For regular use, it almost requires that the strap be strapped down.

In my opinion, the strap should've been reversed and strapped to the outside.

Would not recommend to anyone for any use other than Triathlon.
