SmartWool Expedition Trekking Sock -
When you’re planning on an extended backpacking trip, you need socks that keep your feet comfortable and dry. SmartWool Expedition Trekking socks are designed for long miles on the trail and carrying a full pack. The wool in SmartWool socks is culled from New Zealand Merino sheep. SmartWool technology then makes use of Merino wool’s natural properties to produce a sock that’s soft enough to keep your feet from itching. Lightweight, SmartWool fibers have a hydrophobic interior and hydrophyllic surface that transfer and repels moisture away from the skin. The natural crimp of the Merino wool fiber forms tiny air pockets that let the fabric regulate your temperature, whether it’s hot or cold. Trekking socks have a heavy cushion instep for soothing comfort and a high-density sole. The 3 x 1 rib knit top and the increased elastic in the arch area ensure these crew-height socks won’t slide down on your feet. 77% Merino wool, 22% nylon and 1% elastic. Made in USA.
Colors: Gray, Taupe.

Comfortable, but a little hot

I wore these socks to hike the Pennine Way in England (280 miles.) I bought them as they are the thickest socks as I'd be hiking up to 18 miles per day.
The design is great, they pull in on the arch to give supprt, have padding right where you need it and fit very well. Comfort wise they are excellent.
My reservations are that the socks would compact thin on the heels in the day, taking out the cushioning. This problem would partially rectify itself when they were washed, but not fully. My other issue is that in my full grain leather boots they were hot- my feet were VERY sweaty when I forst got them versus my Thorlos. However, I kind of expected this as I bought the thickest, heaviest sock for maximum padding. This alleviated in time and I 'd not regard it as a major issue.
Overall they are comfortable socks, good performers, and Im happy with them.

My winter addiction

I love these socks. I treat myself to a couple pairs of them every year. My oldest pair is 5 years old and only just starting to wear out. They are fantastic. Incredibly warm and soft. Feels like you are wearing slippers. They are thick socks so they can make your shoes feel a little tighter but I can wear them with all the shoes I own except for some very dressy ones. Unlike other brands I have never had to worry about the ankle elastic losing shape. They look today the way they did the day I bought them. There is some pilling that happens but reach in before you put them on and it comes out in a second. It is not the irritating kind that clings on. I have recommended these to so many people and will continue to do so very happily.

Great wool sock!

I've had some of these for up to a decade, and still put them on my Christmas list every year. The older ones get a little stretched out over time (again, we're talking 10 year old socks), but are overall extremely durable. I've only had one or two pairs ever wear through in the 10 years I've been wearing these, and I wear them daily in the winter. I have some SmartWool Mountaineering socks as well, but prefer the slightly less bulky and slightly shorter Trekkers. They do cost quite a bit for a sock, but the durability offsets the expense. I only need one or two new pairs a year to maintain my "herd" of SmartWools.

Like heaven for your feet.

I bought a pair of these sock for use while backpacking but i ended up using them about every other day. I probably wore and washed these socks 150 times before they finally wore a hole in the bottom. I now have three pairs and rotate them so i have a fresh pair everyday. One of the simple joys in my life is putting on a clean pair of these socks every morning. I've done lots of hiking with them and never had any blisters and i don't use them with liners. They are thick so i wear a half size bigger in shoes.

Best Socks I have ever warn!

These socks are the warmest socks I have ever warn. They also are great around the house. My feet always seemed to get cold when sitting on stand while deer hunting no matter how many grams of thinsulate were in my boots or what type of wool socks I had on. Until this year. I wore these socks when it was -18 F with my 1200 g thinsulate boots for hours and never got cold. Then I walked around in the afternoon and my feet were comfortable the whole time. I would highly recommend Smartwool Socks!

Awesome for Afghanistan!!

I was issued SmartWool socks in 2003. I've worn these socks on multiple trips through the mountains of Afghanistan. There were times where I would wear the socks 3-4 days in a row and they would still outperform any other sock I've ever worn. I still have the same socks I was issued in '03 and I just now in 2010 have a small hole in them. I have ABUSED these socks to the fullest. If you want to send a care package to a loved one "down range", send them SmartWool socks.

A hit!

I got a pair of the smart wool trekking socks for each of my sons. They were thrilled. They are very pleased with the every aspect of the socks. most importantly the comfort. They are all in agreement that this sock is the best thing they have ever put on their feet.
I was impressed with the pricing, the speedy delivery and how easy it was to use the Cabela website.
Thanks so much for helping me give my sons a gift they love and for making my holiday shopping so easy.

comfy and durable

I rely on my feet for a living as a field technician and wildland firefighter, so it’s important to me to keep my feet happy and blister free. Since discovering Smartwool Expedition socks 8 years ago, my feet have been much happier than they were with other brands of socks. For extra comfort I couple these with a thin sock liner. Believe it or not, my first pair of Smartwool Expeditions are still in use although they are very thin and I’ve got a dozen or more in rotation.

The Best Hiking Socks

I wore 4 pairs of these on a 10-day trip up Kilimanjaro. They were the best, most trouble-free piece of equipment I brought. They kept me warm and comfortable but didn't stink despite the harsh environment. They're great in warm and cold weather, and work well for lounging around the house in winter. I've worn them on miserable hikes in the pouring rain where these socks were the only bright spot of the day. I recommend them to anyone looking for a relatively heavy hiking sock.

Sock For Me

I've been purchasing SmartWool socks for several years and the Expedition Trekking sock version is the best yet. I can get more temp operating range from my boots and shoes which means on days when the temps vary widely, I am comfortable all day. The socks themselves are sooooo comfortable, that when I get home, I leave them on like slippers. I also bought them for many family members who all enjoy them for many activities.

Negative Reviews:

Not as good as they used to be!

I loved the old version of these socks, but the new ones I ordered stretched out way too fast and bunched up right away. I really think the quality of smartwool has gone down sonsiderably because I looked at the old and new socks together and the old one has a much tighter weave and is better shaped. I used to be a big smartwool fan but after this experience I doubt I'll ever buy their socks again.
Jolenya of the mountains at Mountain Gear on 08/08/2008

too big

Love the sock--the thickness, the feel. But it is too big---not true to size like your other socks. Also, the only option was navy---I'd prefer gray and/or black.
Rheua at Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) on 01/01/2007

Poor performance

After 5 day hikes, socks developed holes along the top seam above the toes. Very disappointed in the performance of these expensive socks. REI brand much better.

Am I the only one?

These socks make my feet sweat like crazy. In the fall in the winter. Do I need a liner? Also wish they were more form fitting...tapered.
