SmartWool Hiking Sock Reviews:

Positive Reviews:

My boots and I beat these to death every year, and the same three pairs I've had for years continue to stand up to the abuse. When I'm casually hiking without a pack these are my favorite socks. If I'm wearing full-size boots and have my pack on then I wear Smartwool's Trekking socks, which, are the greatest socks ever created.
Also, a small addition, I discovered Smartwool about 12 years ago or so. I'm a drummer, and always hated cotton socks. Twenty minutes into a show or rehearsal my shoes and feet would feel as if I fell in a pool with my clothes on. I tried a pair of Smartwools out and was absolutely awestruck. My feet stayed dry, felt better, and always remained the perfect temperature. Now that I spend most of my time backpacking things haven't changed. I'll stand by Smartwool as long as they keep making the Trekking weights and these. You will not find better socks. Period.

Luv 'em...I want more!

I love this sock whether I'm in the office or on the trail. The sock is a great density and thickness for year round use...there are thicker socks and there are thinner socks, but this one is mixed just right. My feet sweat a lot and they move the moisture well enough to keep them dry and comfortable in most conditions. I'm not sure how the other reviewer could say they don't breath well...the only thing that breaths better than this sock is a screen door, but that won't work well as a sock. He also mentioned that his feet became sweaty...I thought everyone knew socks don't stop your feet from sweating...they just cushion and move the moisture away from your foot as it sweats. If you're looking for an antiperspirant this isn't going to work...it's just a sock...but a darn good one.

Like the smart wool

I bought $100 worth of these socks for an upcoming deployment to Afghanistan. I have a pair that was issued to me in 1999 that I have been wearing regularly since. They are absolutely bulletproof. They don't wear out. They don't stink. They wick moisture well. They are comfortable. When I know I'm doing something arduous, I make sure I'm wearing those socks. Anyway, I decided to buy more smartwool socks. These "Hiking light wool" socks are not the same as the ones I just mentioned.

Like my original smartwool socks, these wick moisture well. They're comfortable. They don't resist smell as well as my old pair. Also, they already look pretty wore despite only 2 months use. Still, they're better than the Army issue wool socks and I like them a lot.

Show your feet some love!

These socks keep your feet comfortable no matter the temperature. Hiking in summer heat leaves your feet sweaty, but these socks wick the sweat away from your feet, helping them to stay dry and relatively cool. I've submerged my feet in icy rivers with these socks too, and they retain heat well enough that after a few minutes I couldn't tell that my feet had gotten cold at all. They're very durable in the toes and heels; these socks have outlasted any other socks that I've ever put through the same treatment. And they're a breeze to wash/dry. These are without a doubt the best socks I've ever owned, and the only socks I care to have with me when hiking or travelling.

Finally a warm winter sock for sweaty people

The rumors about wool are true! After being told over and over again that wool is the way to go I broke down and bought a few pairs of the smart wool PHD socks and these guys on clearance. WHAT AN AWESOME PRODUCT! My job requires me to hike in waders all day so you can imagine how much moisture builds up in my boots. These things really work! Even after being in waders for 8 hours my feet feel awesome and there is no awful burnt death smell emanating from my feet when I take them off! These babies are thick and will keep you warm even when wading in icy waters! Buy them while they are still on sale!!!!

Great pair of socks

I recently took these socks on a field trip to virginia. The weather got down to high 20's and my feet stayed toasty in my sleeping bag at night with these socks on. There is simply no comparison to a good pair of wool socks if you are going to be out and in your boots all day. I love that these socks have a good elastic band around the top. A lot of wool socks I own tend to ride down my leg, but not these babies. Best pair of socks I have ever wrapped around my piggies. They are well worth the price I love them.

keep your feet dry by wicking well. not for use in weather above 75 in my experience, but my feet sweat a lot. good padding in the right places. had the same 3 socks (not pairs, i lost one) for almost 12 years. they are supremely worn, but they are still better than cotton or cotton blend socks years later. i wear these one day, switch to PHDs the next, and back to these after that. makes for pretty stink-free hiking. 4 stars instead of 5 because i like the PHDs better, but for the price these are B.A.!!!

The quintessential hiking sock. Buy it.

Wool socks have long been the ally of outdoorsmen. Since it grows on sheep, wool is an excellent natural temperature regulating material. SmartWool has become the big name in wool foot-coverings. They live up to the standard nicely. These socks will serve you well throughout many a mountain trek. They fit well, they are very durable, and they will keep your feet happy. The only downside is if they get wet, they will not dry very quickly. But this is true of all wool socks. Every avid hiker should have at least a few pairs of these.
Caleb at Moosejaw on 02/26/2013

This past year I finally switched over to "sage" for my boot socks. I mainly used that standard issue black wool/cotton sock as my primary sock to wear while in uniform. Loden is a green that is just a shade or two different than the typical sage but it works just the same. My feet and I feel so much more comfortable in these socks. In the past i have been oppose to paying $16 for a pair when i could easily get 3 pairs for $6 less but these socks are worth the extra.

Phenomenal hiking sock!

In the past, I've used very heavy and thick wool socks for my hunting/hiking adventures. I kept reading great testimonials about the Smartwool hiking socks. Well, I decided to purchase a pair and see for myself what the buzz was about concerning these socks. It only took the first time wearing them and I immediately understood the cult following of these socks.......cause they flat our ROCK. They were so light, so comfortable, and kept my feet toasty warm without any sweating....and the best part....no itchy feet. I immediately bought another pair. Thanks MooseJaw!

Negative Reviews:

Product Defective

I have just opened the pack on these socks and was shocked to find two holes -- one large enough to poke a forefinger through on the heel immediately above the reinforcement weave and another small one at the bottom of the weave.
Big Al at Rock/Creek Outfitters on 11/11/2011

Neutral Reviews:

These socks are comfortable enough and fit alright, but they just don't hold a candle to the SmartWool pHD's.
