This is the best piece of clothing I own

| This shirt does everything a base layer should do and more. It keeps your core comfortable in a wide range of temperatures, it fits snugly so it doesn't get in the way of other layers, but it's not too tight that it looks like spandex or hinders your movement. I've worn this shirt backpacking, snowboarding, and on the town (cause it looks GOOD), and in all environments I was comfortable when the temperatures dropped and comfortable when I went in the heated indoors. That's one of the really nice things about this wool: you don't have to be moving for it to keep you warm. With the underarmour base layer I have, if I'm not moving it's not doing much for me. It also stinks pretty profoundly after some heavy use. The smart wool does not. You may also be pleased to know that it does not shrink badly if you put it in the drier. I accidentally tossed it in the drier on high heat with a bunch of other clothes and it still fits fine. They should really call this "Magic Wool," not simply "Smart." The only possible downside is watch out around brush/thorns and the like. I got a thorn caught on this thing one time and nearly had a heart attack. Luckily I stopped moving before it did any damage. There may be more bullet proof base layers out there, but 90% of the time you probably won't have a problem. | |

The midweight is definitely a must if you are thinking about low output endeavors in cold weather. I use the term "endeavor" loosely because this piece's performance does not limit you to trekking around in the snow, but also good for times when you are just standing around thanks to its great thermal management. Also, there's no sacrifice on street aesthetic, so you can grab a beer or coffee in it without raising an eyebrow (or nose thanks to the odor fighting).

So I have had a set of Smartwool underwear for a while now (midweight bottoms, midweight crew top). They are unbelievable! Very warm and breathe very well. You can use them anywhere: I have had them backpacking, running, around the house and they were key for tailgating at homecoming this year (Fire up Chips!)I wore the set under jeans and a t-shirt in 25 degree temps and was nice and comfortable all day. Buy these!

This is one of the best purchases I have made. If you are thinking of buying a wool shirt that will keep you warm with minimal care this is the one.
