GPS Pod for Suunto | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
The cold start takes a while- especially if you're doing it in a new location- maybe 5 minutes. But once it's locked on it keeps it well. It is worth looking on the various Suunto and forums like Yahoo's Wristop Computers for advice, since there is a lot to know about how to use it. On flat land it seems very accurate- the problem is with mileage in the 3rd dimension- it is not so obvious how one would calibrate it since GPS systems don't really do the vertical dimension well. But if you are running/biking on flat ground calibration is easy. Finally, one of Suunto's strongest points is that when the watch locks on to the pod (or HR belt) it does so positively- Polar products seem more intermittent. Once you've learned to use it, for flat land (outside) it might be one of the better distance/speed units out there.

I agree...this works great!

Yep, it works great. Like the previous reviewer, I've had great success with the Suunto GPS Pod. I've had no problems with the GPS dropping out in steep walled canyons or heavily wooded trails. These devices can be a little finicky, but mine picks up satellites within a few seconds even during cloudy weather. It may be a bit pricey, but if you run and bike it will replace the need for a foot pod and a bike pod. The only thing that would make this a 5 star product is if it actually sent coordinates to the watch so that you could map your run/bike/hike. Suunto hasn't added that functionality, but I still love my GPS Pod.

Impressive. | |

Out of the box and working in fifteen minutes. A bit of experimentation with buttons proved fruitless because the watch menu system does not function like standard digital watches. Once I calmed down and read the manual all worked and sync-ed up quickly. The only negative thing I have to say after the first run: I am disappointed the GPS Pod has no ability to recharge itself. Positive: It was way lighter than I expected.

Like a charm... | |

Everyone who wants to monitor their progress and improve, this device is great. I trail run through canyons and this device keeps a good signal throughout the entire trail. I've ran the same path 5 times and it has consistently given me the same distance. Other than that, it takes a while to find a signal, which can be frustrating sometimes when I want to hit the trail before the sun sets.

| Easy to set up,first time out must of hit the wrong button, but after that it was a breeze. Checked distance aginst another gps unit and it was dead on speed and distance, starts off a little slow ,but doesn't effect over all distance. Occasional pair divice for accuracy, and always wear up high on shoulder for good coverage. | |

Suunto GPS Pod | |

This is a good product, more accurate than the foot pod I used to use with my Suunto T6 watch and simple to set up. I've used it in the woods a little bit, and haven't lost the GPS signal, but I haven't used it in deep, thick woods, which will be the acid test.

| I bought the gps pod for a suunto t4 watch in the hopes of being able to keep better track of my mileage and the pace I was running while training. Unfortunately the gps pod does fall short of giving accurate splits. Being a runner, the measurement mode I use is the minutes/mile mode. While the gps pod can give you a general (quite broadly general) idea of how fast you are running... however if you are looking for something that will give you an accurate reading of what pace you are running, you are out of luck with this product. I am a pretty consistent with my paces when I run, and at the time of this review I try to keep my threshold runs around 6:10-6:20. Unfortunately while running in complete open spaces, the gps pod does not seem to give accurate readings. While just looking at the speed readings randomly, I noticed the display fluctuate between 4 minutes per mile, to 10 minutes per mile. I set an autolap for .1 miles, and it started to give me somewhat more reasonable results, but still they would fluctuate between 5:30 to 7:30 pace, and I assure you that was not my doing. Ironically, it almost appeared to be more accurate while in forested trails, so I don't think brush plays much of a factor. The only way to get an accurate reading is to set an autolap of something longer like .7 miles or so, but for the purposes of my training I need to know my pace a lot more often than .7 mile intervals! For serious trainers, I'd say this product probably is not worth the money :( | |

Great, on a sunny day...

I've used my GPS pod three times. The first time it worked brilliantly (sunny day), second time it didn't work at all (raining), and the third time (cloudy) it took 6 minutes to find a satellite. I'm about to take it back and swap it for a footpod... fingers crossed this'll work better.

| Perhaps it is where I live in Jacksonville FL but the GPS pod takes a few minutes to begin tracking and then it is well off of what I am running. I used a foot pod which gave a very different and much more accurate read of distance and speed. Perhaps with better coverage the GPS Pod would be a better match? Comments from The Staff: Thanks for your review. The GPS POD can take a few moments to lock on to satellites, as you have seen. If you plan on running through heavily wooded areas, urban areas with tall buildings, etc., give it a few moments more to lock on to as many satellites as possible, or use the Foot POD for these runs; ANY GPS may encounter tracking issues in these types of environments. Thanks again for your feedback. Brent Site Manager, SuuntoWatches.com | |

| I passed along my Garmin 205 to my wife and bought the Suunto T3. Since I had previously used a GPS I chose the GPS pod. Attaching to the GPS is far slower than the garmin. I have stood around 5-10 minutes at times waiting to find a satellite (which is agonizing when you are energized and ready to run). I have also lost connection during trail races which is very frustrating on many levels. However, when the GPS has a connection it is as accurate as the Garmin and works well. Since I love the T3 watch and may spend the extra $100 to get the foot pod. If Suunto would accept an exchange I would be willing to return my GPS for the foot pod. Please let me know if this is possible. | |
