What Does the Suunto S-Lander do?

Altimeter Watch: Climbers, skiers, and hikers rely on the altitude data provided by the S-Lander's altimeter.

An automatic 24-hour memory stores altitude and ascent/descent for every hour. The altitude difference measurement tracks your vertical progress between stages.

When you finish your day, the logbook displays the total and cumulative vertical ascents and descents, as well as the number of runs.

Barometer Watch: Knowing what to expect from Mother Nature can save your life. The S-Lander barometer watch keeps you one step ahead of the weather.

The barometer displays current pressure and temperature. The barometer also records barometric pressure from the past 4 days, allowing you to make strong predictions.

Set the reference altitude to show the present sea level pressure, helping you to better interpret barometric pressure at high altitudes.

Chronograph Watch: The S-Lander's stopwatch functions provide you with unlimited split/lap times.

Watch Features: Wake up on time with the alarm and have two alarms left over to remind you of meetings and lunch. Keep track of the time where you are and where your family waits with the dual time feature.

S Lander Review

Rating:****
I really like the S Lander and gave considerable thought prior to Purchase. I also considered the highgear watches as well as the Suunto observer.I also own a timex helix my first multifunctional altitude watch where the band broke and could not be replaced. It did last 4 years and the battery has still not been chnged. the S Lander is nice as its bigger with bigger display than the observer so its easier to read. I really like the brometric trend indicator graph in the altitude screen. It is really helpful since the altitude is based on pressure I know that when the atmospheric pressure is changing to compensate for altitude readings. I hope the band lasts longer than writeups in previous reviews. The reason I chose this over the other watches is that it looks like the band can be changed by the user or any watch shop and any kind of aftermarket band could be used. A watch is only as useful when you have a band for it. Since this appears to be the achilles heel of all of these watches I thought this would be an advantage. I am so glad I downloaded the instruction manual and read it priot to puchase as I was ready to use the watch once it arrived. The instruction manual really helps clarify what the watch can and can't do much better than the advertisements which can be deceiving and its a pretty complex watch. Kudo's to suunto for having the manuals on their web site. There are two shortcomings which I noticed. One is that the alarms are useless. Even when I was looking directly at the watch in a quiet environment awaiting the alarm ot go off it was so quiet I realized it could never be depended on to alert me. ( My Timex Helix is the same size and it has a loud alarm that continues till you turn it off. You can't miss it.) I know Suunto says that this is because there is so much in such a small package but the S landr does not have a compass like the X lander and I was hoping that they would use the space for the compass to improve the alarm so its usable. the second issue is the log book. It should really allow the user to clear it rather than be self erasing. I am not sure if my watch is defective but the log book is full and I have not been able to start a log book. According to the manual the old logs self erase but mine has not.
It also does not have split time capability on the stopwatch and I really would have liked this but I knew this prior to purchase as it was delineated in the manual and it was a compromise i made
Overall I think its a great watch providing you do not need ot measure split stopwatch times and do not need an alarm. The watch band is stiff and probably just needs ot be broken in.

If they could
1. Add split times in the stopwatch mode
2. Make it so you could erase the old logs
3. Make the alarm so it could be heard and would continue to go off till you stopped it

It would be SUPERB.
As it is now it is a great watch with some faults

I have had the X-Lander for about five years and it has been bullet-proof. I haven't actully shot a gun at it, but it has stood up to everything I have put it through. It has been dropped onto a concrete floor, bumped into door frames, worn daily for almost the entire time I have owned it, and still keeps excellent time. It loses about 1 second per six weeks and all of the features work well. the water resistance is still good, even after changing the battery, only once in whole time. My only complaint is that the lettering on the turnable ring on the face have worn off. I have a G6M, but I have not been using it too much... So I cannot comment on it's performance, but I expect it to work as well as my X-Lander

This watch does more than all my other watches I've ever owned-put together! I spend a lot of time outdoors & I've used it for such diverse activities as scuba diving & climbing to the top of Mt. Whitney. One of the best features is being able to change the battery at home and not losing the "water resistant" integrity. The barometer probably saved my life (and others with me) by showing a rapid decrease in pressure - giving us warning to seek shelter from a lightning storm before we even saw the signs. I love this product. The altimeter is really handy hiking in the high country, helping pinpoint location on a map. I could do all this with a GPS, but why - when I have this watch?

I purchased the watch in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom 5. I purchased the watch based on the capabilities of the watch the compass, altimiter, and multiple times you can keep. The watch came in really handy when calling medivac and needing a direction for the aircraft to land and calling winds from a specific direction. It was also extremely useful when taking altitude readings and knowing a quick reference for altitude changes from location to location. All these assets were nice and convient for use. Also the ability to tell temperatures in the vehicles when temps were well above 120 degrees. These temps make a big difference when ensuring soldiers were getting water necessary to remain hydrated and able to conduct operations as necessary.

I bought the watch before my second 14 month tour in Iraq. Because I am a pilot, I wanted something that had Barometer, ALT and compass. I have had the watch for three years now (15 months in Iraq and numerous field exercises) and the watch is still going strong. Poly watch band absolutely sucked (broke in 1 month)but am still using the same band with modifications. I will buy the new one to try out. The only other thing that is annoying is the inadvertant switching from time to other pages (ALT, BARO, COMPASS) just from being active/moving around. Button activation could be tighter to prevent that. All in all, I am very satisfied with the watch. Thanks

Great watch.. mostly use it for the log book when skiing or mountain biking. Only annoying thing that's happened so far is that the logbook apparently maxes out at 30,000 vertical feet. the logbook switched to dashes once i hit 30,000 on ascent and/or descent Comments with the Staff Thanks for the review. Here is an excerpt from the S-Lander instruction manual: 'The maximum figure that can be shown on the display is 29,999.999 representing feet or meters depending on the unit of measurement set. This should be enough for most users: 29,999.999 meters is roughly threequarters around the globe.' Hope this helps; glad you’re liking the S-Lander and thanks again for your input!

I've been using this product for about 2 months. I bought it primarily for skiing, but used it successfully in CO for hiking and mountain biking. I like its looks. The three primary functions are intuitive and easy to use. I also am pleased with the band - it's a rugged synthetic which will serve well in winter weather. It's a great product - I can't wait for ski season.

I am happy with the watch except that it is so complicated to operate and it is very difficult to get the light on. Comments from the Staff: Complicated? Yes, on that point we have to agree. The proper operation of an S-Lander, or any of Suunto's altimeter watches, takes some understanding, patience, and pratice. Difficult to get the light on? You press and hold the button for 2 seconds. Something may be malfunctioning.

I am not too happy with the watch in general. Within 4 months of purchase the band ripped and I had to buy a new one. That should be covered in a warranty, when I paid the price I did for the watch. I also had to buy a new battery a week after I bought the watch. It keep dying on me.
