Perfect for me

Rating:*****
I've been using Suunto Vectors for 4 years now and they are by far my watch of choice. I currently own three. The reason it's my #1 choice? I use the altimeter function with my powered paraglider. By using the vector as my daily timepiece I never have to worry about forgetting it when I go to fly. Use is simple and reliable, I reset (zero) it before flight and it's never let me down. Ten foot increments are perfect for easy reference and the display size is plenty large enough to see when taking a quick glance in flight. Water hasn't been an issue the half dozen times I've taken it swimming, I've always taken care changing batteries. Only now have I ordered a batter change kit with a new battery hatch, O-ring & battery. I like that I can replace the hatch for a few dollars. Support by Suunto has been amazing, I hit my first vector on something in the course of the day and took off the benzel. Never found it, but a quick call to Suunto USA and a new ring and spring set was on its way the next day, no charge. Five minute and a pair of tweezers and the watch looks and functions good as new. Suunto's got it all, great products, fantastic customer support, and even a catch phrase: Suunto - Replacing Luck.

Owned a Vector 5 years

Rating:****
I have been using this watch 5 years. At the 3 year mark I was on an airline flight and the altimeter tanked (I fly about once a month). At that time the watch plastic was so brittle from 3 years of constant use (I wear it 24 hours a day: sleeping, shower, the works) that I couldnt take the battery cover off without the plastic breaking. [...] I had a completely rebuilt watch (strap, cover, everything). The watch does scratch easily (for example, I was shoveling gravel and realized that I scratched the watch all up from doing work), but some 2000 wet sandpaper cleared up the face easily. This watch has been a trooper. I destroy most watches within 6 months and this one has lasted years. I would recommend this watch to anyone. Plus at the current price point, this watch is a steal.

"Pluses outweigh Minuses"

Rating:****
The Suunto Vector is a watch that delivers what it promises - time, altitude, barometric pressure and electronic compass. On a recent two week backpacking trip, I found the watch useful and to work well - particularly the altimeter feature which literally adds a third dimension to one's map work. It must be noted, however, that the altimeter works through barometric pressure and so if while ascending a peak, the weather is going down the tube, the altimeter may project an elevation above your destination. The only drawback of note is the seconds hand of the watch. Because the watch circumference is segemented into thirty-six parts for compass purposes rather than sixty parts for se

good, perfect jumble of features

Rating:****
this product is lots of fun to use. the barometer allows you to track weather patterns from your watch, and the compass is very accurate. the altimeter is among the best i have seen in watches, however the altimeter DOES still drift even with the safegaurds. usually it will be fairly accurate unless a big storm comes through, though. but you should still know the reference altitude of your base-camp so you can set it before you start to insure better accuracy. all in all this watch is a great buy, but if you are a billionaire, i would get the one with the GPS!

Great Watch

Rating:*****
This is a great watch. My first Vector has lasted more than a decade and is still spot on. The buttons were getting a bit vague so I purchased a new one at a killer price. It is accurate and reliable and I wear it constantly in all outdoor pursuits. Its rugged and puts up with all the usual back country abuse. I wouldn't recommend crack climbing with it unless you want to trash the face but apart from that, none better. And its made in Finland not China, the last of the Finnish Suuntos.

had it forever

Rating:****
I've owned a vector ever since they came out, so a good 7 years. My first one was replaced free, and the second keeps ticking. Awesome features, I still don't know how to use all of them. My only problem is the waterproofness issue. I got caught on the bike in a rainstorm, and even that caused condensation under the bezel. I would also reccomend the face shield if you plan on doing any climbing, as the face gets scratched to hell. Great watch...

"i bought mine when i was in high school. i'm still wearing it right now."

Rating:*****
literally all i have had to do with this little guy is buy the suunto battery changing kits for 6 dollars but what does he do for me?? gets me out of forests when i get lost backpacking (or at least back on trail), lets me know when the weather going to get a little crappy, tells me how fast i'm trekking up and down hills on the trail and looks quite pretty upon my wrist. I wear it still to this day.

Good Reliable Watch

Rating:****
I have had previous versions of this watch and liked the fact that I could change the battery myself. Brands like Casio void your warrant as soon as the battery is changed by anyone. Sunnto does not and the battery is easy to change. I am not fond of the band, it catches on clothing. I have replace the band on the previous versions that I owned. Otherwise a great watch.

"Better than Imagined"

Rating:*****
At first i was kind of worried because the face of the watch is a lot larger than i expected it to be. I had been wanting a watch for a while and finally decided to make the dive. Watch is worth its price, barely noticeable on your wrist, useful, and make your buddies look like idiots when they act like they know what direction they are going.

So far so good....

Rating:****
We bought this watch for our son for his graduation from High School so that he can have it when he enters the US Air Force in the Fall, so far he seems to be enjoying it, tremendously. This watch came highly recommended to us by multiple military personnel, both active and retired. The only negative is that it is a large watch.

Missing Important Functions

Rating:*
I bought the Suunto Vector when my Avocet altimiter watch finally died, then propmtly returned it. As a ski patroller and back country skier this watch lacks the ability to view current log book data while the current log book is recording. According to the product manual this feature is available for the Altimax and S-Lander models but with the Vector and X-Lander you can't view current accumulated vertical or number of laps while in the current log book, only in past log books. It makes no sense not to have access to this data during a ski day.
It's also pretty complicated to use with many sub screens. I'm looking into High Gear watches and judging by their product manuals they seem to have more features for less money.

poor features, durability, battery life

Rating:*
I've given up on expecting what is advertised to be true with the Vector, after three (yeah, I know "fool me once...") dogged attempts at making this my watch.

It eats batteries, vulnerable to water, and is easily disabled by a fall from the bathroom sink countertop to the floor.

Don't do it, even at half price.

Nice features

Rating:***
I've owned one for 5 years, it's been great for hiking and mountain climbing, very good altimeter for a watch. One very strong weakness I have found is that they are only moderately water resistant. This is actually my second Suunto Vector and both got water in them when swimming, the first was covered under warranty, the second was not and it was ruined. I contacted there service center via e-mail with the problem and they did not have a solution. My advise would be to purchase a new o-ring seal on the battery compartment every time you change the battery. And I will probably purchase another one.

Watchband is a nightmaer..

Rating:***
...if your dog eats the original. The replacement band options - at least through REI - are a waste of time. Clearly designed by engineers (with a marketing edge) the velcro option is completely worthless. REI stopped carrying them so getting a replacement band was difficult and the one I eventually got was not a perfect fit and is so non-user-friendly I wonder if they'll be out of business soon. Love the watch itself, but the bands are so poorly designed they take away any benefits the watch has. There has to be better products out there. Do more research, ask around.

Fun novelty but not very accurate

Rating:***
I got this wrist computer to monitor altitude gained/lost while hiking. It's easy to use but not very accurate. I know that it's based on atmospheric pressure but I was expecting more... on a 'round trip' hike (started and ended at the same trailhead), it said I gained 350' and lost 930'. The real number is closer to 1,500'. I'm going to keep it but I not going to rely on it for serious navigation.
DrFun at Mountain Gear on 12/11/2008

I'd buy it again.

Rating:***
A great watch but beware of the big buttons that tend to get bumped and change the displayed function stressing your battery life. Maybe the next model will have some raised edges on it to help out some.
