I was looking for a good overall jacket...lightweight, durable, but most of all versatile. Being from Bozeman, MT, where weather extremes can change back and forth daily, I needed something I could put over a hoodie, or more, on chilly days but wear comfortably on its own in a wide degree of temperatures, both in the mountains and around town. This jacket fits the bill perfectly. In the two weeks I've owned it I have used it daily, going to work, around town christmas shopping, hiking Hyalite Reservoir, skiing Big sky, and on a date to a local brewery on a Friday night, and was absolutely comfortable on all occasions. It currently is unusually warm here, so once temperatures drop, it will certainly need to be layered, but I have a winter jacket for that. It is fairly water resistant but not ideal for rain (which we had last night), and I wouldnt use it as a ski jacket unless it was unusually warm like it has been. Overall, the fit is pretty true to size, I am 6'0, 190 athletic build, got a Large and it fits well by itself or overtop a base layer. The jacket is Black Heather, and it is certainly a much lighter grey than the pictures on the site, but that is of no consequence to me. I would say this jacket will be able to handle 75% of my winter activities this year. Overall, if you are looking for a technical jacket that can stand up to deep winter activities, probably not the jacket for you, but a good versatile jacket that will be able to handle a wide range of moderate cold, and be good for light outdoor and backcountry fun. And Backcountry.com was quick, painless, and the shipping was fast and free
I mean that literally. This jacket has individual features that might be useful, but the whole is less than the sum of it's parts.
The outer face is a nice sturdy DWR soft shell material. Stands up to branches, thorns and rocks quite well. Sheds light precip for a few minutes, but more than 10-15 minutes in a steady drizzle will overwhelm it at the shoulders and start soaking through.
Then we have the fleece backer which adds no appreciable warmth and binds when you try to layer wool/fleece/cotton under it (poly slides OK). Better hope your layers have thumb holes, or your sleeves are going to be bunched entirely above your elbows.
So it's not warm and you can't easily layer under it. Well ok, but it's still a decent wind breaker with DWR finish right? Not really. The shell material doesn't breathe particularly well (and there are no pit vents/zips). Certainly not well enough to keep you dry at the temperatures this jacket will keep you comfortably warm in (40-60F) with any kind of aerobic activity.
It is nice for walking around the mall in, since there's no insulation you won't overheat like in a Denali.
2 Stars because the shell material is nice, without the binding fleece backer making it cumbersome as a shell I'd probably give it 3.5-4.
This is my first TNF Jacket. Traditionally, I'm a big supporter of Arc'teryx but wanted a causal jacket, a less expense, that gave me the ability to adjust the sleeve/wrist openings. I bought both the large and medium, and the large was great in the shoulders but made me look 7 months pregnant/gave an non tailored fit in the midsection. The medium worked out because the material stretches so I can layer up underneath and still keep a tailored fit through my midsection.
I can see the difference in quality between my Arc Jackets and TNF; in additional to the clientele they cater to. This jacket is sized to the masses in my opinion; if you're looking for a true technical piece- Go Fish!
My dimensions: 6'1 185-190, 41R suit, 16 x 34 dress shirt. 32 x 32 pant; and a fashion a tailored fitted in all my apparel
*MRSP on the Tag lists the jacket for 129.XX
