Technology Overview: Apex Soft Shell Fabric:
A soft shell technology breakthrough. Apex is a signature material, researched and developed exclusively by The North Face. Apex makes the fleece/shell combination possible through its proprietary blend of characteristics. Apex offers the dynamic duo of a tightly woven abrasion-phobic face for protection, and a soft-brushed interior for performance and comfort. Apex technology is built to stretch for comfort and mobility and is treated with our Durable Water Resistant (DWR) finish.
Apex features are nylon constructed and woven for stretch enhancement to achieve the balance between weather resistance and breathability. The average air permeability rating for these fabrics is below 20 CFM.
Apex is finished with DWR to increase water shed. DWR is laboratory tested for durability and extended wash and wear according to the standard AATCC 22 Water Repellency Spray Test. All Apex™ fabrics meet The North Face standard rating of 90 (70 after a specified number of home washings) for long-term durability.)
All Apex garments keep you dry in a thick fog or light rain environment. Apex garments are built for warmth. The tightly woven fabric face creates a hard barrier to the elements of cold weather, while the soft-brushed interior allows for a soft warm-next-to-skin feel. The brushed interior also promotes a microclimate, allowing for superior moisture management and continued climate control.

I love this jacket! I've been wearing it constantly for the 2 or so months that I've had it. With a light sweater underneath it can double as a light winter jacket, and since the weather's been warmer I've also been wearing it outside when it's around 60 degrees. I never feel uncomfortable with the temp inside the jacket. I hope to be able to wear it snowboarding, although I haven't tried yet. It seems decently water resistant (although I wouldn't wear it in a rainstorm w/ no umbrella,) and it is definitely wind resistant. Yesterday I wore this while I rode on the back of my boyfriends motorcycle, and I could tell that the wind was tugging at the shoulders and arms of the jacket, but I didn't feel any wind going through the jacket at all! I also like how it's longer in the back for when you sit down, and especially for the motorcycle. I bought the jacket a size too big (so I thought at first,) but now I am really glad that I didn't get the smaller size. The material stretches well, but the cuffs of the sleeves are a little too tight, so the bigger size fits nicely if you're going to wear long-sleeves underneath. Be warned that the material seems a little rubbery when you first get the jacket, but that's what keeps it stretchy and water resistant... it will grow on you! Also, I thought that the ventilated pockets wouldn't be warm, but more often than not I'm glad that I have the ventilation. The white color that I got looks great, although it's a little harder to keep clean. I was also able to see the red color, and it's more of a dark pinkish looking maroon than a red. Both the white and red and really pretty and can be worn with pretty much anything.

It rocks

Rating:*****

This jacket Rocks. I was looking for an extra layer to put under my Gore-tex coat when I was headed for Chicago in March. It got down to 25 degrees and I never felt the wind go through me which I would with the Gore-tex coat. On it's own this little jacket blocks the wind so that when it's around 50 degrees it's all I need. It really protects you and creates that barrier. The tapered length is a non-issue for me, some expressed they didn't like that and I was worried but it's totally flattering and natural looking. I got the black and it fits me great. It's so light. I am forever wearing fleeces but the wind will always go through. For real cold I didn't want to have to do like 5 layers again, lugging all that stuff around... so this is the only underlayer I need. I am not only happy with this purchase, I am thrilled. Can you tell? lol It has a great fabric/material, very high tech yet elegant looking and great fit. I researched softshells and other jackets for a month extensively and am glad I found the Apex.

Great jacket for the price

Rating:*****

I have had this jacket since late summer but only now I have been able to take it for a test drive. Temps have finally hit below 50 degrees and the Apex Bionic has made me happy camper. A little sprinkle this morning did not even phase this jacket, it beaded up and rolled off but I would say the this softshell would not take anything more than a sprinkle. After some shopping and driving around town this jacket actually got too warm. I would say this jacket would provide me with enough protection and warmth from 40 degrees down to 20 degrees easily anything above a windbreaker will do the job for me. The quality and fit and finish of this jacket is top rate, pockets a plenty, and I love the feel of the softshell. The thing about softshells is the fabric does not pill so it looks new all the time. Another North Face product to add to my collection and I have a feeling this might be usefull all winter when its not blistering cold.

I bought a lime green and then a magenta one for my mom. We both love out bionic jackets. It's dirt and stain repellent....good for me! And its bright colors are really attractive but not glaring! The drop back hem makes the front hem look short. And yes, with low rider jeans, it's a little short, but doable. Sporty chic!

I use this jacket for three seasons: as layers underneath in the winter, and an everyday jacket in the transitional fall and spring days. It would be too warm in DC's summer but it would be an all-around favorite in SF.

I really like the soft sleeve and chin guards, and TNF zipper is quality. The fabric is also non-snagging (for you Velcro testers out there) which is perfect for hiking in a briar filled forest. Pockets are also well-placed and easy to use.

Wish-list...if it only had pit zips like the EMS soft shells!

Lightweight, warm, and comfortable on the plane and in the yard raking leaves. Bought it in white: dog drool, mud, and the filth from the console between the front seats of the car wash off no problem. (The car needs cleaning, though...) Turn the jacket inside out and it dries quickly just hanging up. Waistband is same length all the way around. I tried the coat on at TNF store for size and that one had the longer back - looks funny. Fit in a W's large is A-OK for my broad shoulders and long arms, but I wouldn't wear anything bulky under it. I usually end up in size 14/16 in women's coats to have a comfortable fit in the shoulders and long enough sleeves, with the rest of the coat too big. This fits very nicely all around - hurray. Lots of compliments from strangers, so I guess it looks good, too. I love it.

Serves Many Purposes--and Stylish!

Rating:*****

This jacket is really great for the mild, windy, and damp winters in the South. I can see wearing the Apex Bionic Jacket from October to March. It blocks wind and repels light rain and collateral splashing. It's a great weight for being active on a chilly day. It's fairly slim-fitting, so I like wearing a long-sleeve thin hoodie underneath rather than a fleece or sweater. The long dip in back is great for biking, and the sleeves keep gusts of wind out at the wrist. This jacket seems to be cut to fit a taller person than me (5' 4"), so the sleeves are a little long, and they can't really be rolled back or pushed up the arm because of the stiffness of the fabric. A small issue, really. I get compliments on this jacket every time I wear it. Backcountry.com sells it at the lowest prices anywhere. I highly recommend it!

Best jacket EVER for hiking in wind!

Rating:*****
I bought this jacket just before a hiking trip. I get cold easily and at times the windy conditions ruin my level of enjoyment on what would otherwise be a scenic, beautiful day of hiking. This jacket made all the difference!!! Though not waterproof, this jacket is single-handedly the best article of clothing I've ever purchased for hiking! I highly recommend it! The zippers are concealed in the fabric for a stylish look, but honestly I think if they were exposed (like they are on the men's version of this same jacket) they would have worked much better. They were sometimes difficult to operate. But that's my only complaint, it would certainly not be a decision breaker for me, because this jacket is absolutely perfect in so many other capacities! I love it and would strongly recommend it to anyone!!!

pretty awesome, not for everyone tho i think

Rating:****

Love the jacket, love the color. I got it in the snow white. it's a pleasantly slight off-white. i heard the north face runs big, and that's pretty accurate, my usual xs isn't as fitted as i would prefer. i'm actually kinda swimming in it but i still really like it, comfy and not too long [i'm on the short side so that's often a problem, 5'4", 25" waist, 33" bust]. fit is a little boxy tho but not unflattering. slightly shorter in front but with low rise jeans that's gonna be hot. great fit through shoulder. just wishing this jacket was a little more fitted and cut more femininly, but still very happy with it :) good shipping time [did the free ship option] and had tracking all the way. awesome!! overall very excited about wearing it! =D

I have two colors..this is the most flattering fit of all my tnf coats..I keep one in the back of my suv at all times..great spring/fall coat..super cute on too..sheds rain and breathes well..material is not like the apex thermal this has a bit of a stretch to it..it's perfect for the ocean..when you need something for the cool breeze but you don't need a really warm coat..keep to your normal size with this and you can layer under it and wear in cooler temps as well..for me it's good to about 50 degrees alone or about 15-20 with serious layering(tnf oso hoody & base layer)..this fits a little shorter in the hips but has the shirt tale cut in the back for good coverage..perfect cut imho.

Size Description not Accurate

Rating:****

This is a great jacket BUT is does not fit the way the North Face description says it does. I ordered a medium - I am a 36B with hips around 39 but according to the size description, the chest is supposed to be up to 37 and the hips are supposed to be up to 39; however the chest actually measures up to 40 and the hips up to 42!!!!! If the description is that far off, how can you possibly order the right size the first time?? Bummer - so I have to send this one back and order a small and hopefully they will have one (but I still have to pay for shipping again - not a good thing....).. Oh, well, lesson learned!

Negative Reviews:

Awkward, unfeminine and unflattering fit. It's relatively more fitted around the waist, and then gets more boxy and shapeless as you go up towards the bust arms and shoulders. Also quite short in front, it almost felt cropped (who was this designed for??). I wanted something that I could wear comfortably on chilly spring/fall days, but that would have me covered if it happened to rain (I bought the hooded version, which is sold out now). But this is just not comfortable at all. Picture an incredibly stiff 100% polyester jacket. I guess I'll stick to my comfy fleece types for everyday warmth, and stash the unstylish raincoat in my car and hope for the best. I guess I expected more for the price and the name, but I'll be going back to my Marmots and Patagonias (heads and shoulders above North Face in fit and style).

Stiff, windstopper with bulky arms

Rating:**

This is a disspointment from my favorite North Face line. I already own 4 other TNF products and this is the one in the back of my closet. It has an effective windstopping material with the apex fabric but the arms are very bulky and then slim down dramatically towards the wrists so you look lik you have very broad shoulders. Doesn't keep you warm at all in cold weather under 60 degrees F. Has a nice cut with it being longer in the back and higher in the front but i wouldn't recommend this if you want a streamlined windstopper jacket. I would go with the North Face Pamir for that-- a lot more expensive but you are getting way more with that jacket.

Lacking a drawcord hem

Rating:**
I wore this jacket twice, but ended up taking it back. I have narrow hips, and the hem does not fit perfectly snugly around my hips- there is an extra inch or two of give. I did not realize this would be an issue, but on a windy day the wind comes right up the front of the jacket, and it's really cold. This could easily be remedied if there was a drawcord at the hem, and the Apex Bionic Thermal jacket has one, but this doens't. Also, the front of the jacket is fairly short, so if you wear it with low-rise jeans, the jacket barely meets the top of your jeans. I do not have a long torso, either.

Exchanged it

Rating:**

I ordered one in a size small in the pink fever color. Many said to order a size smaller than what you usually wear and since I wear both a small or medium depending on the brand, I ordered a small. I was so excited to get it based on all the great reviews but I was not impressed. I did not like the color and it felt too short and too small. I have exchanged it for a size medium in snow white so we will see how that turns out. I recommend ordering the size you usually wear, especially if you are going to wear a lot of layers underneath!

Not for Everyone

Rating:**

I know that everyone seems to love this jacket...and I really tried. But I found it to run too large. I'm on the petite side, but not "skinny" - just normal-bodied for 5'3". I found this to be a little on the short side in the XS, but it was too big around the torso and waist. It gapped at the bottom and was not sleek and flattering in my opinion. Too bad, because I got a great price on it.

Strange fit

Rating:**

I might not be familiar with TNF fitting, but I ordered 2 TNF jackets and while the down XS fit me perfectly, the Apex Bionic XS had weird proportions. The sleeves were a good length but the upper arms were too roomy/bulky (maybe for bodybuilder arms!) and the front of the jacket was too short and barely came to the top of my pants. Good luck with the fit!

The jacket is nice looking but the long back looked really bad on me. I am 5"4" and 130Lbs and not fat at all but this jacket looked really odd. To bad, I have seen it on tall women and it looked good. I sent it back.

the fit was all wrong, unless of course you like that paper bag look. though the pictures makes it appear that the jacket is fitted, it was deceiving, it fit like a box and wasn't long enough. i sent it back

Great Material, Bad Fit

Rating:**

I bought this jacket because my boyfriend loves the men's version. When I tried it on though the front was about 2 inches shorter than the back in length. The shoulders and arms fit fine but the length was too short.

Apex Bionic Jacket

I didn't like the way this jacket fit at all. I found it bulky, too short in the front, and too long in the back. Overall, just not that comfortable to wear.

Weird fit and disappointing - This jacket just didn't fit my body at all, so I had to return it. I first ordered a large (according to sizing chart for bust and waist measurements) and it was just huge on me everywhere. The sleeves were way too long and there was a lot of excess fabric around the torso. Not flattering at all. So I tried it in a size medium and the sleeves fit, but then the chest was too tight. I wouldn't be able to wear anything more than a thin t-shirt underneath if I wanted to have it zipped up and still be comfortable. Also, the material is not what I expected either, it was very stiff and not very soft. I'll just have to keep looking for a good comfortable soft-shell jacket.

Nice but....

Rating:***

While I like the weight and material of the jacket I am disappointed that it does not draw strings on the sides to allow it to fit more snuggly. Without them it is boxy and allows the cold air in. I ws surprised since the mens' apex bionic has the draw strings as does the womens' apex bionic triclimate (the exact same jacket with a pull out liner) Don't get this if you want a more form fitting jacket.

Rating:***

I recieved my jacket in the mail super fast--5 days free shipping-- but when i tried it in, i was very disappointed. it was very short and it was shaped as if i should have had a men's upper body. it was very triangular shaped. BUT- for a very short torso'd woman who has lots of curves up top, i recommend it. too bad it didn't fit me.. returning ASAP.

Poor fit

Rating:***

I bought the jacket after looking at reviews, but ended up returning it after trying it on at home. I'm sure it performs well outdoors, but the fit is all wrong! I'm 5'3" and not skinny, and the jacket (size small) was not only very loose at the bottom but also very short, especially in the front. I prefer something tighter that won't let in air from below.

tyche at Backcountry.com Outlet on 04/26/2008

Nice but too short

Rating:***

Maybe I'm just too picky about clothes, but I didn't like the front length of the jacket. It's short- comes to just above the belt- and I found that agitating. If you prefer longer shirts/tops or have a lengthy torso, I wouldn't recommend the jacket. I'm returning mine, unfortunately. Otherwise, it's nice.. extremely warm comfortable.

I too bought a "girly" color for the first time, nice color, but unlike many others, I am not finding it very breathable at all- and really wish it had pit zips. For regular use, I am not finding it as toasty warm as others are finding it.

I sent this jacket back because it was too big. Also, I didn't like how it hung down lower in the back. And, the lining color was not gray, like it showed in the picture when I ordered it. It was brown.
