Bionic Design Yes

I love this jacket for it's capabilities. I first bought it back in 2008 for a trip up to my first 14'er in CA. There was still snow on the trail in August, it was cold and windy the whole way. This jacket was breathable and windproof and warm the whole way!!! I didn't feel too hot or too cold at any point and time. Fit was great too! Feels true to size. The main problem I had was that after a few years, the NF white turned yellow. Blech! I wore it around 20 times over the years and took great care of it since it was one of my first technical jackets. Unfortunately with the color change I had to exchange it. Thank goodness for being an REI member. This past year I exchanged for just a black jacket. Faded black I can handle if that happens, yellow is just a no go in my opinion. Anyhow, this new purchase is just as great as the last. I've worn it mulitple times now, hiking in cold and frigid NC weather. The only thing I noticed is that the sleeve length is definitely changed, much longer, maybe too much. My boyfriend says it's for movement but my last jacket had no issues with shorter sleeves. Oh well, I just push them up or keep my hands warmer inside of them. Overall, great jacket and will keep it for a very long time. I can see doing multiple activities in this jacket from standard hiking to multi day backpacking trips just like I've done with the last one and why I bought it.

Just as claimed!

First off I'm about 120 pounds large chested (meaning broad and long), small breasted, and 5ft 9inches. I'm also a young adult and prefer low waisted pants/bottoms. With that said, focus on my title. I have a size small in the purple which is my true size. Accept for that the first reviewer was disappointed I completely agree with her. This is not a long torso, flexible, super breathable, or super stretchy jacket. If you want something like that I recommend you look at a bestseller fleece from north face called Denali (there are 3 versions). If u want super stretchy view the NF Ruby Rashel or better yet the NF Apex Elixer. Or anouther similiar NF shell. In your true size I wouldn't expect much layers if any to fit underneath it. This jackets biggest selling points are it's high water repelantce, style, and 100 % windproof. It's breathable and stretchy but, you can defiantly find jackets that are better at those features. It doesn't claim to be super stretchy or very breathable. The neck is a little stiff but, foldable to go down. For what it is it's awesome!

Great jacket!! :)

I just bought this in the Weimaraner Brown color yesterday. It's my first ever Northface purchase & I love it! It looks exactly the same in person in the store as it does online. I'm 5'1" 36" 29" 38" so I was planning on getting the Medium (going by the size chart measurements) but it ended up being too big for my liking when I tried it on. I ended up getting the small & it fits perfectly! Still enough movability even with a thick sweater on underneath, but I get what other people were saying about the fabric being "stiff." It's not a problem for me & I think it's just the jacket having structure. The collar sits straight up initially, but it can be folded down no problem. It's very flattering & a great pick if you want something very warm/waterproof but don't want the bulk of one of those poofy bubble jackets. Very well made, thanks Northface!
DemiLeigh at The North Face on 01/26/2013

Caution in the wash!

I have owned two seasons of this jacket. The first time I bought it, mid 2000s, I ended up trading it for a new one because the color faded in weird places after it had gone through a few washes. Now the second one I own, from a season after the previous, has also now experienced the same. The tag says to use delicate warm. I usually use delicate cold. It seems after the time I washed it in warm (the previous style included) to get a mud stain or grass out, the jacket faded in weird places so the color is no longer uniform.

Besides that glitch, I have loved this jacket. It is very warm. I don't like it for hikes because I get too hot in it. It's perfect for nights in the city of San Francisco or Seattle.
Urty at REI on 04/04/2013

Love the coat

I saw this coat last year! I have been wanting to purchase it for a year now and never did. I waited even bought a different coat thinking that it would work fine. Boy was I wrong. That coat didn't even last me a year. I now bought this coat and love it. I live on an island and there is lots of wind it really keeps the wind out and me warm! It also repels rain which is a great addition to the coat. The thing i like the most is that I can layer it if I want. the only thing that would make this better if it had a hood that way I wouldn't have to wear something else under it with a hood for when it is raining! Overall love the coat and completely happy with my purchase!
Katherine at Moosejaw on 05/26/2013
I'm disappointed with this jacket. I'd read so many great reviews about how warm and versatile it was. My gripes: it's very stiff & doesn't seem very breathable, not good for skiing or climbing. I'm 5'3", 110 lbs, usually a XS or S in TNF. The S fit, but if I roll my shoulders back, felt tight across the chest (I'm pretty flat), & it would definitely feel tight if I had any layers underneath. Thinner than expected/not very warm. Also, the cuffs are really tight, so you can't roll them up if you get warm. It's kind of short, so not good coverage in the cold. If you want a tailored spring/fall windproof jacket, it's good. I was looking for something more functional and substantial to use as an midlayer for winter that could also be worn alone for spring/fall.
Anonymous - customer at Zappos.com on 02/22/2011

I ordered a small, which turned out very snug and looked fine if I wore thin clothing underneath so I exchanged for a medium. I'm 5'4 and 135 lbs. The medium has slightly long sleeves but it fits well and I can still wear a sweater underneath
I wore this the first time with low 60 degree weather and slightly windy, I was still chilly so I had to provide another layer underneath. Overall I'm satisfied with the jacket, it's not as warm as I thought it would be but that's not a problem that can't be fixed with additional clothing. and it did keep me dry! Great price too, got TNF black and used the discount so well worth it!
Con- collar is very stiff, hard to fold down but handy with wind. And I wish it had inside pockets.

Tina at Backcountry.com on 11/06/2012

Minnesota Girl Approved

It is on the smaller side so I recommend trying it on in a store before ordering it online. The wind resistance is great. I haven't been in wet conditions yet, but this jacket keeps me really warm. I live in Minnesota and the weather gets pretty intense around here! I walked to work, in 10 degree weather and I was warm! I had a hoodie underneath and actually had slight moisture (sweat)coming on! If it had a hood, it would be sooooooo perfect!!! And lot's of people are complaining about the zipper bumping their neck, but I don't have any issues with it. It happened once and I zipped it down a tad bit. If you want your neck to be covered, perhaps you should consider wearing a scarf!!!!
RealWinterWeatherLiving at The North Face on 12/12/2012

A fantastic jacket, very versatile for different types of weather. Worth the price.

This jacket is fantastic. It has great protection against the wind and rain, and is warm enough that it's very comfortable, even in the winter. It's perfect for skiing in milder weather as well. It's more form fitting than other North Face products I own, particularly around the stomach, but I still got the same size as I normally do, and am very happy with it. I'm 5'5, 140 lbs, and I wear a medium. The sleeves are nice and long, which is perfect on colder days to keep your hands warm, and the collar easily flips up to protect your neck against strong winds when necessary. I wear this jacket often enough that it's worth the price. I would absolutely buy another in a different color.
anonymous at Moosejaw on 03/21/2013

Love this jacket. It is light-weight & warm. It is longer in the back which ensures your lower back stays covered when sitting or bending over. It has a lovely, soft lining that is also in the hand pockets to keep your hands toasty warm. There is a hidden cuff on the sleeves which stops breezes going up your sleeves. The collar is a bit stiff and quite high which kind of gets in the way (near your jaw line) when sitting.
I got the Response Red which is bright but I love it. Bought the small, which I found true to size. I love the cut - it is ultra feminine, pulling in at the waist and not bulky anywhere. I am 173cm (5ft 6), 62kg (136lb).

Ash at Backcountry.com on 07/15/2012

Negative Reviews:

What were they thinking??

Everything about this jacket is wrong. I have three other North Face jackets and one -- the Windwall -- appears fairly similar to the Apex Bionic. However, while I like the Windwall, the fit and design of the Apex Bionic is just bizarre. I am 5'7", 117lb and usually wear an XS or S. I ordered a S. The arms are ridiculously long but also are tight at the bottom and cannot easily be rolled up. The collar is too high, stiff and cut strangely so that it has the annoying habit of jabbing your chin. I have no idea what went wrong with the design... but I'm so mad I cut the tags off prematurely.
ash1 at The North Face on 02/07/2013

Not windproof

Bought this jacket for travel to replace a leather jacket that I would layer over fleece for extra warmth and wind resistance. I paid extra for this version of the Bionic. I can definitely feel a chill when the wind blows. The jacket is cut for tall people. I am 5'6'' and the collar cuts under my chin. The sleeves are 2 inches too long.

Very disappointed.
cliffdweller at Campmor on 03/03/2011

Cuffs too small

Everything worked about this jacket except that the cuffs were so small I finally took a pair of scissors to them. My hands are medium size (7.5 womens gloves).
I got my Apex in 2006, so maybe they're corrected this problem by now. But DO try the fit before you buy it.
Spadefoot at REI on 01/01/2013

Strange Fit

I am returning this product. The fit is really strange. The sleeves are too long. I ordered a large which is usually big enough to layer a fleece or something underneath. This one just fit, which is not what I wanted.
Jackieb at Campmor on 01/01/2012

Strange Fit

Large usually fits with room for a fleece or sweater underneath. This just fit - no layering allowed! Also, the sleeves were too long. It was just a strange fit overall. I returned the jacket.

Neutral Reviews:

disappointed

I'm disappointed with this jacket. I'd read so many great reviews about how warm and versatile it was. My gripes: it's very stiff/doesn't move well & doesn't seem very breathable (& no pit zips!), so IMO, not good for skiing, hiking, or climbing. I'm 5'3", 110 lbs, usually a XS or S in TNF. The S fits, but if I roll my shoulders back, it felt tight across the chest (I'm pretty flat). It would definitely feel tight if I had any mid-weight layers underneath, which would be necessary in the winter b/c it's much thinner than expected & doesn't seem like it would be very warm. Also, the cuffs are really tight, so you can't roll them up if you get warm. It's kind of short, so not good coverage in the cold. If you want a nice-looking, tailored spring/fall windproof jacket for around town, this is it. I was hoping for something breathable enough for outdoor activities, and versatile enough to use with layers in the winter or worn alone for spring/fall.
kcdc at REI on 02/02/2011

Sleeve is too long for xsmall women bionic jacket

This jacket is designed to be body fitting. It is sleek looking and is suitable for any occasions. I wore it on a business trip. I am a petite woman. The jacket fits well but the sleeves are too long. This jacket is a bit disproportionate compared to similar jacket made by Columbia. Body hugging middle and super long sleeves make me bulky on the ams. My boyfriend who owns a bionic jacket faces the same issue. He is 6 ft 2 in, toned 210lbs, average american athletic frame and the jacket is still too long for his arms. Hopefully north face can come up with jacket that has the average sleeve length for most people.
Crystalivy at The North Face on 01/13/2013

love the material, this will be a great all around jacket. I like the slenderness of the arms. Great for archery.
The collar is annoying, it wont lay down so its always hitting my chin. I wear a 2x and the jacket is snug but fits. The one thing i really dont care for is the length of the arms. Im long armed, but they are still too long. I feel a little kid with my fingertips showing. I have to tuck it up under.
So for the price, its not all its cracked up to be - It would be if they fixed those 2 things.

mis100387281 at Backcountry.com on 11/20/2012

Just OK

This is an overall good jacket. I dont know that its quite worth the price, though. The jacket seems to run true to size but the fit is very strange. The length of the coat is too short for my taste and I am by no means a tall lady. The arms, however, were too long and they were kind of baggy. The jacket makes me look a little boxy and I would have preferred a more slimming look. It is warm and waterproof and is functional, but Im not crazy about how it fits.

STICKY GUNK

This is my favorite go-to jacket! I purchased it in Dec 2011. It is very soft, warm, and comfy. I am very disappointed though because of these sticky bumps that have begin to accumulate around the wrists and elbows. It's just impossible to get rid of these and they are very gross looking. I take EXTREMELY great care of my clothes. I wash in cold water on the hand-wash cycle and air dry. I have no idea why this would occur and i am currently in the process of contacting NF

New style of jacket changed Fall 2012

I had the older version of this jacket which I loved. I went to buy another one in the same size, Medium, and it was huge on me! Very baggy sleeves and open on the bottom. I went to store thinking they increased all the sizes. I tried on the small, and way too small. I don't understand why they changed the way this jacket fits? I guess I have to wait until they redesign it again to buy another one.

I brought my daughter the black apex jacket in August 2012 and the elastic in the jacket is pullin thru the outer layer and pullin loose and it looks worn and old. You can actally see the elastic on the jacket. I did not expect the apex jacket to fall apart from normal wear that quick

Always wear a M. It was too tight around my bottom and would have ridden up all the time. ordered a L but the sleeves went over my hands - and no velcro to make them shorter. Regrettably returning both. Also not sure but the collar might not have been comfortable.
