Great vest for winter sports enthusiast
| Rating: | ![]() |
This vest is great for people who are active outdoors in the winter. I bought it to play ultimate frisbee in the rain / snow this winter --> I like my arms free if possible so this vest seemed like a good choice. It is GREAT vs the wind so it keeps your core toasty even on those days where the wind is whistling all around you. I happened to have it as a mid-layer when I went sking w/ my son. It turned out that he had forgotten his ski jacket, so he wore mine and I wore an old coat w/ a broken zipper (which was just flapping open) and the vest underneath. While I won't say I was exactly roasting chestnuts underneath, I was doing okay even though the outside temp was in the mid-twenties. I couldn't have made it through the evening w/o this vest.

Great Heat Regulator | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
I took it and climbed Mt. Adam's in Washington to help me regulate my heat output while summiting. It worked great and kept that vicious wind at that altitude off my core. I also glissaded with it as my shell, granted it was mostly ice and no snow, wouldn't be ideal if there was a good powder on the glacier. I really don't have a single complaint, it has performed great since then to. I even took a good spill down a rock quarry out in eastern Oregon and it didn't tear or scuff even though the fall scuffed my by body up real nicely where the apex vest wasn't covering me up... ha-ha. Great product, definitely going to put this as a regular in my quiver of gear to pull from!!!

Awesome Mid-layer | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
No matter what I'm doing outside, my arms are usually the last to get cold - and the first to get all funky. I swear by vests when it comes to mid-layer protection. I usually stay away from The North Face, but I was impressed by the fit, material, and windblocking features of this vest. I got it on sale, so I'm not sure it would be worth the 100 dollars, but if you're looking for a windproof layer under a wool or simple fleece, this is a great option. The smooth surface reduces friction, the high pockets are great for backpacking, and the collar goes nice and high. Great choice.

"excellent vest" | |

| I have used a vest from another brand for years and it was always great. Since I bought this one last year in Kathmandu I haven't wore the old one. I'm coaching a lot of teams during night time in the Netherlands and I have this with me every single time. I also use it to play golf, when I go skiing or snowboarding etc. Great thing, buy it. | |

I wear this everywhere | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
| From fall to spring I have this vest on almost constantly. Anything 15F and over, I wear a sweatshirt under it and it's perfect. When it's less than 0F, I put a jacket over it. I wear it inside in cool buildings, as a spring jacket, ski jacket, and just about anything else. In short, I wear it everywhere and very rarely do I need anything else. | |

"Classy looking vest."

| I own this vest and I absolutely love it. I love the look and feel of the Apex material. I own the Apex jacket and had to get this vest. Wear it with a T-shirt or wear it with a long sleeved shirt underneath. You will be surprised how warm it it. It has a great look to it. | |

Nice | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
A great vest, I have taken several spills on rails and boxes and there are no tears or wear spots visible. Remarkable how well it blocks wind. If you have an athletic build, size down if you want it form fitting. I am 6'3", 46" chest, 34" waist and the medium fits comfortably over medium weight base layers.

"Can't complain" | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
| This vest is sweet! I wear it under a jacket and it's done a great job keeping the wind out completely. The only drawback is that my core is so warm that the rest of my body feels colder than usual, guess I need some more North Face gear to solve this though. | |

The perfect mid-layer!
| Rating: | ![]() |
| Every other mid-layer I used was too hot or too cold. This is perfect! The lack of arms and insulation are key. Works great without a shell when it's warm and sunny too, since it breaks the wind so well. | |

Apex: wind / Nadir: breathability
| Rating: | ![]() |
| While the NF Apex vest scores points for affordability & wind resistance, its extremely poor breathability and lack of stretch severely limit its use for much more than casual around-town use. I bought one in hopes that it would provide core warmth over a powerstretch layer while trail running, snowshoing & hiking in 30-50 degree weather. The bottom line: after 30 minutes of aerobic activity, my bottom layer is drenched because NF's Apex fabric just doesn't breathe. It also doesn't layer very well, because the fabric doesn't stretch half as well as, say Schoeller 400. Lack of breathability reduces this to pretty much a fashion piece for non-aerobic pursuits in temps when you're not at risk of getting cold arms. | |

Apex vest sizing | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
The sizing is very strange. I bought an XL which is my normal size and it was miles too large for me so I sent it back and got a large. But large is a little on the small size, so the difference in adjacent sizes is too great. Also there is no chest pocket as in the jacket. Another feature that I don't like is the zip pull being on the left side as I am right handed like the majority of people and would prefer it on the other side. Overall rating - fair.
