Funky looks, serious protection.
It would be nice to spend the winter in a sunny, temperate clime (with frequent trips to snowy peaks thrown in), but since most us us aren't that lucky, The North Face created the Men's Back-to-Berkley Boot. And while it may sport a retro West-Coast-y vibe, this is one boot that's ready for old-school, nasty northern winters. Between the PU coating on the ballistic mesh upper, the waterproofing on the suede mudguard, and the Hydroseal waterproof membrane, your feet won't be getting wet this winter. Thanks to 100-gram PrimaLoft Eco insulation, they'll be warm, too.

The North Face Back-To-Berkeley Reviews:

Positive Reviews:

I bought these boots for those snowy/rainy days in Michigan during the winter. I have used them in snow, rain, mud, and on icy pavement. They have exceeded my expectations. These are not rain boots, nor are they snow boots but they will keep your feet warm and dry for a few hours in either of these conditions. I have had no leaks and they are fairly warm in snow with a thicker pair of socks. They are very comfortable and I often use them on snowy/rainy days when I have errands to run as they are not too hot to wear inside. Overall they are great for everyday use and work quite well for more demanding conditions. They work for what I use them for, so be sure to evaluate what you want out of these before you decide. I wear a 10-10.5 in most shoes so I went with an 11 and they fit well.

Fun

I just picked these up in Vancouver, they're super light and comfy on the feet. Laced up before the hooks, looks pretty cool jeans tucked behind the tounge, then laced up on the hooks gives more than enough support for non aggressive hike. The grip is amazing, wet tile in the bathroom, holds firm!
I'm usually an 11 in most shoes, but I found them to be a be a lot tighter, the store I was at didn't have 1/2 size so I grabbed a 12. A lot more comfier a size up for me.
Overall a very good urban to trial stylish crossover boot,

I am impressed with these boots. They are a perfect medium between shoes and boots - light, but warm. I live on the border of North Dakota and Manitoba and we have some serious winters. These boots have performed great in the 6-10 inches of snow for several hours walking the dogs. The top two sets of eyelets are shredding the laces which is disappointing. However, they did come with an extra set in another color. I prefer the red laces and contacted North Face and they sent me extra laces for free! Overall I am impressed with these boots.

I bought these true to size despite what all the reviews said about going with a size larger. At first they felt a little small but I just wore them anyways. Now after having worn them for awhile they fit perfect. Ive been using them in the snow and they work great. They keep my feet dry and have great traction on the snow and ice. I have the Flamenco Blue and get complements on them every time I wear them.
Wes H - customer at Zappos.com on 01/29/2012

These are obviously a lightweight, city-walk, "boot-version" of a walkabout shoe. I'll definitely buy'em,... but according to reviews, they will not endure water, abuse, and hard wear. They're very cool looking which attracted me, and I expect them to deliver long hours of comfortable, casual wear, without problems, for a few years: naturally, with compliments! For $90 bucks (which is nothing nowadays) what do you guys expect?: these are $90 of cool.

So far they are really comfortable and light weight. I have only worn them in the streets, not out hiking or in the woods yet but I plan on doing so. Very well made and a nice look as well.

Zach Brown at Backcountry.com on 11/24/2010
I just got these for my Fiance and he loves them! They are the perfect in between of a shoe and boot. Waterproof and sturdy yet lightweight and everyday shoe like!
Shanti B - customer at Zappos.com on 10/11/2011
This boot is a hybrid - it feels like a shoe on your feet but is tougher than any hiking boot I've owned.
Al - customer at Zappos.com on 11/16/2010
I'm very happy with my purchase and would highly recommend these for others. This is a great all around boot.

Negative Reviews:

In brief: Cozy and cool for light, casual use. Expect cold wet feet for anything remotely beyond that.
I got these boots to wear around town, walking to/from work and short hikes in the snow, rain and cold. For those purposes, they are fine and I do love the look. But calling these boots waterproof is absurd. The exposed foam soles and ankles soak up moisture and funnel it into the boot when flexed. On a recent hike in very light rain the boots soaked through in about an hour to the point that I had to wring out my socks and the insoles. The boots then completely soaked a change of dry socks in a matter of steps. With each step the foam squished water into the boot. I resigned myself to water-logged feet for the rest of my 2-day trip and wishing I'd worn my goretex trail runners instead.

will.starr at Backcountry.com on 04/24/2012

I have returned them for new pairs twice now and they both developed leaks. The first pair even had a bad seem where my big toe went in one of the boots and it was too painful to even wear. But they look cool.

Max at Backcountry.com on 02/24/2011

Not very waterproof at all, two weeks in and my feet had damp patches all over.
Rubber came away from front and the inner lining rubbed off my ankle.
Very light, but not as advertised, I wouldn't buy these again.

Northbadger at Backcountry.com on 04/26/2011

Will not fit D or wider foot

Big disappointment with this order because the shoe had all the features I wanted, except fit. Oops. If your foot is D or wider, you have one choice in the under $300 area: Keen.
Biarootz Blue at Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) on 02/02/2013

Neutral Reviews:

Lightweight boots with excellent traction in the snow. I've tested them on the Glacier at Mt Hood for 2 days in 70 degree weather and they held up quite well. THey were a bit wet after 5 or 6 hrs. I would call them water resistant rather than water proof. They are a great fit for me and I believe they should work out really well in the snow especially in colder temps.
