Good quality

Rating:****
I did a review on this pack shortly after purchasing it, but it appears the early reviews from 08 have been purged. I believe this pack deserves a review to assist members in making a decision about a purchase.

This is a solid built pack that rides well with a light load and is fairly adjustable. The hip belt is adequate and when not used has a handy hide away in the rear panel, the sternum strap has some vertical adjustment, shoulder straps have ample adjustment and the compression straps allowed you to adjust for the load. Both shoulder straps have small D rings for attaching items and one strap has a nylon pocket for a small item.

The front Bungee System is narrow and limited to small items. The rain flaps for the zippers interfere with the zipper operation, but by folding them back you can avoid any interference. The stash pocket is deep and will hold a plethora of small items. My only dislike is the internal organizer in the front pocket. It has multiple small compartments and when filled up sags into the pocket. The simple fix is only use it for small items. The pack will accept a hydration bladder in the area reserved for a lap top and has an exit port for the drinking tube.

I’ve had this pack for the past nine months and it has survived twenty or so outings. It still looks good with no visible signs of wear. I got tired of the organizers sagging into the pocket when filled with items so I removed the organizer. If you carry water bottles in the outside pockets make sure you draw them tight, because they can jostle out. These pockets are also difficult to reach when you have the pack on your back.

This is a good casual day pack or book bag, great for an afternoon in the park or a stroll around a scenic spot. If you are thinking more technical than this, you may want to look at some others with more weight support.

Great bag for travel

Rating:*****
I bought this bag to use as a carry-on for family trips. My wife and I were about to take a trip to Mexico with our 2 young children, and needed a bag that would be easy to carry through the airport with hands free for pushing a stroller and/or carrying a baby, with enough capacity for toys, DVD player, extra diapers, etc. This one fit the bill perfectly. The outermost pocket was great for passports and boarding passes, the next pocket includes pouches that were perfectly sized for iPod, phone, glasses and other small items, and the main pocket includes a padded laptop sleeve which was ideal for our portable DVD player, and was also roomy enough to hold a variety of toys, books and other items. The exterior bungee cords can hold a sweater or windbreaker, and the side pouches are great for bottles of water (or sippy cups, in our case). The shoulder straps are well shaped and comfortably padded, making this bag easy to carry through a big airport even when full, and the bag is well sized to fit underneath an airline seat. Highly recommended as a carry-on bag.

Can't go wrong here - Solid Pack

Rating:*****

I bought my Borealis primarily for graduate school, books that is. I bought a separate laptop bag and used it once or twice and then tried the laptop compartment in the Borealis. Well the laptop bag was a total waste of money, this pack is awesome for carrying your laptop. I have a 14in widescreen HP notebook and it fits great secure and snug. The padding on the pack is awesome and the waist belt tucks away unless your're carrying some heavy loads. I have used it for day hikes and its just as awesome for hiking as it is toting around textbooks and my laptop at the same time. Durable too, I have used it literally 5/7 days a week for nearly 2 years and it looks pretty mcuh new. Additionally, the organizer compartent is great for whatever you need to put in, its nicely organized. Overall amazing pack, I promise you will not be dissapointed.

"A great pack for any activity"

Rating:*****
I bought this pack during school for carrying my books and such. I needed a secure pack preferably with a chest strap to distribute weight more evenly. The real test was after school I took this pack on a couple vacations and hikes. I took this to Guatemala during there rainy season, it not only kept up with my climbing and hiking up different mountains and volcanoes, but not a single thing inside of it got wet. This backpack was great and holds tight to your back no matter if you are at school or in the rain forests of Guatemala. The price is up there but this backpack will get the job done, it also will hold two water bottles. Nalgene's are tight but will fit.

"For an overly invloved student on campus and frequent traveler!...this pack cannot be beaten."

Rating:*****
I bought the Borealis to use at school. I've finally made the transition to live off-campus and realized that a dainty, too-expensive shoulder bag wouldn't cut the commute from home to school, especially with the heavy load of classes I'm taking on this semester. I already have lower-back problems, I don't need one shoulder to be higher than the other. I went into the store and a friendly face told me which packs were the most popular and which packs were underrated. I spent a good hour trying on different packs or the same pack in different colors, when I found the winner. My chute green Borealis. It not only has room for those God-forsaken books, I have a pouch for my laptop as well. I hav

Pleased

Rating:****

After about 3 weeks of use, I'm pretty pleased with this backpack. Here are the things I love about the product:
--I bought the Amethyst Quartz Purple one, and the color is really pretty.
--The material seems very durable and stain resistant.
--My laptop fits nicely in the back pocket.
--Plenty of pockets for storing keys, mp3 player, gum, etc.
--It doesn't hurt my back.
--I think it looks cool.

The things I don't like so much:
--part of the North Face decal on the shoulder strap started to peel off. It now says "Orth Face," which to me sounds like how you might insult a science fiction fan.
--the reflective material (in the photograph, it's the silver stuff) is starting to wear already.

The last pack I'll ever have to buy!!

Rating:*****

I bought it primarily as a book bag for school. It fits my 15" HP notebook and keeps it secure along with books. Organization pocket is handy for my calculator, pens, keys and whatever else I seem to stash in it. It holds a lot of things while maintaining a slim look. I also use it as a daypack, It has a hydration hanger and opening. I don't think they mention that in the features. I took the bladder out of my Camelback and presto! I've gone thru a bunch of packs, but like I said this is the last pack I'll ever had to buy. I do have my eye on the Heckler though, but that's just 'cause I like the camo scheme.

"all the cool kids have a north face"

Rating:*****
In my life i have owned 3 north face backpacks and this one is definitely my favorite. Actually as i write this review its actually sitting on the floor next to me. It has just enough pockets so that i can store everything i need without loosing things. Its durable and holds up well when skiing with it on your back. In addition, its a camp counselors dream. But i'll be honest the real reason i bought one was because at my middle school all the cool kids had one and so i had to have one too. But it was a blessing i felt that way because North Face is a great company that makes a great product.

Versatile travel day-pack

Rating:*****
This is a great all-around day pack. I use this pack as my day-to-day work briefcase and on day-hikes. A 15.4" notebook just fits and I find the organizer very helpful.

For day hikes, a jacket and some snacks easily fit inside, along with an extra water bottle.

When I go car-less on urban trips, I carry a water bottle on one side and a small umbrella on the other.

On free time during work trips, leave the notebook and work related items in the hotel safe and use as day-pack.

I find the size just right, enough room for everything and not too bulky.

"Trifecta Perfecta!"

Rating:*****
So I finally got tired of having a bag for those random 4 day roadtrips, a bag for dayhikes/mtn biking, and a bag for school...so I finally went all utilitarian. I was torn between this and the TNF Recon but opted for the Borealis because it had a cooler name that more people would ask about. So far I've been super happy--> comfortable on hikes...good with school crap...good for stuffing extra jeans and a few shirts in on trips...and today in a deluge of a storm it kept my stuff dry...that was nice. I believe I've finally found a pack I can settle down with.

Negative Reviews:

"DON'T BUY IT!! It's not worth the money."

Rating:*
This pack is total crap. The first time I used, one of the side bungee cords broke. At this point, the bungee cords on the sides have snapped and the handle on the top of the pack as ripped off. While I like that it is water resistant and there is a bungee cord for carrying fleeces or raincoats, you can get those features on other bags. This is not worth your money. Clearly the North Face has stopped catering to the outdoors crowd and has started to cater to college kids who need a status symbol backpack.

The product does not suck, the price does. I just happen to be on the web site and see that I overpaid for this item!!! Nice. I am surprised I haven't received and email with the coupon for the discount yet.
