You won't be climbing any 8,000-meter peaks in The North Face Men's Dhaulagiri GTX Backpacking Boots. But you could carry a 60-pound backpack for several miles while wearing these supportive, rugged, waterproof hiking boots. The North Face used X-Frame technology in these boots—TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) Xs embrace the medial and lateral sides of the ankle to prevent rolling. PU midsoles and EVA heel inserts absorb the shock from your feet hitting the ground with a full load on your back. Full-length TPU shanks between the mid- and outsoles protect your feet from rocks yet aren't rigid and unresponsive. The Gore-Tex membranes keep your feet dry in wet weather or when crossing shallow streams.

Backpacked 40 miles through yosemite in these boots

Rating:*****

I have bad ankles and they held up perfectly without the need of a brace in very rocky terrain. they give the perfect amount to keep from blowing your knee but still saving your ankle. Probably not super-cold weather boots, but I don't hike in super frigid weather anyway and I prefer a non-warm boot for more comfortable warm weather hikes.

Definitely tougher than I expected and they still look/feel in great shape. the vibram soles look like they have barely been hiked on (the Vibram name speaks for itself). I have had many other hunting/hiking boots and these are by far the toughest.

Cons: Don't buy this boot on-line without trying it on. I did that but I was frustrated from trying on millions of boots without finding one that fit and TNF has always made shoes that fit my foot so I took a huge risk, but it worked. Fit is half the battle with boots, you may have a great boot, but have the wrong fit so you have a bad experience and blame it on the boot (instead of blaming yourself for a getting a boot that doesn't fit right). I weight 170 so if you are a heavy dude I don't know, my review could be pointless.

Love but some doubts

Rating:****

Yes I like this boot and have just done 400km of walking in them at 30km per day. I found they were comfortable and stayed dry although did not have masses of rain. They are also wider than other boots which is what I needed. My gripes would be: a) not always easy to get right tightening pressure on laces (but this is a matter of adjustment), b) feet got very tired in them and I believe the sole could use a bit more cushioning technology, c) sometimes a bit hot. When walking, I would have to stop every 10km to take a break. As I had not done a lot of walking before so difficult to compare either in the absolute or relative to other boots, but I was in the mountain infantry and remember Meindl boots being more comfortable. It is mainly the ball of the foot and the heel where I feel the tiredness the most. The certainly look good and are light. They kept rain out but I did not have lots of rain. You do feel stones and other objects under the boot which can sometimes cause discomfort. On the whole I really like the boots though.

One of the best shoes i've owned

Rating:*****

Need a shoe for my trip to Angkor Watt in Cambodia, Land of a thousand mines, land mine that is!! :) Use it straight out of the box. No break in period needed, Fantastico!!! Fit true to size, waterproof, sturdy, comfortable as my mattress, light as a feather, no laces problem, easy to get in and out of the shoe, tough as a bull, can even withstand the land mine i guess..... Well the last one was a joke :)

There's just one problem i realise when using it as an everyday shoe, it is slippery when walking on wet grounds though. I nearly slipped a couple of times during the rain walking on concrete around town and some marble flooring outside malls. It was ok when i was backpacking in Cambodia though. Oh yes, one more thing, it is a bit warm to use in the tropics or during summer. But it was ok for me, who is from Singapore, The Equator!! :)

All in all a very good shoe for the price i got, USD90. Go get it!!!

H2O free socks!

Rating:****

Pretty cool backpacking boots. They are waterproof after hiking with the kiddos in the snow and slush on a little 2 hr day hike. Haven't tried them with a 40-50# pack. At first I thought they were going to be a little wide but cinched up around my narrow foot easily. I have the size 12 US and I still have room for thick trekking socks. I always wear a size 12 only, rarely moving up to a 12 1/2 or 13. Tru to fit size.

Box to trail, perfect!

Rating:*****

I needed to upgrade my hiking boots to backpacking boots, and as I love my North Face hiking boots, I figured, why not? They are perfect; fit, waterproof, and supportive on my first trip into the Emigrant Gap wilderness in Tahoe Nat'l Forest. Great on loose rocks, which were plentiful, great on long uphill climbs (also plentiful) but 3 days didn't even begin to make my feet anything but comfy.

150 miles and still going strong

Rating:*****

So far I have absolutely no complaints with these boots. I have done multiple 10-15 mile day hikes in extreme summer temps with no complaints at all. All of the miles put on these boots are on PA AT trails with nothing but rocks and long climbs. I always carry 30-40lbs w/ and the boots have great ankle support. I'd buy again.

Thru-hiker

haven't gone on any long adventure with them yet, but they look and feel great. Strong ankle support and easy lacing deliver enough confidence for me to take these on a multi-day hike in the mountains. They are Pretty light as well.

Not so waterproof

After 9 months use:

I was initially happy with these boots, until I got the chance to use them during the winter and especially the spring months. They might have a gore-tex membrane but the membrane is only going to work if the boot is constructed well.I've had to move on to boots from a different manufacturer because I didn't enjoy wet cold feet. After 10 mins in the rain these boots will soak through, not much different than a boot with no membrane. I posted a review to The North Face website, but they removed it
...................
These are a very light/quick boot, with great support and construction. I think the description of this product is 100% accurate.Even being a fast, light hiking boot they take a good month to break in, but that's a good thing in my opinion. The gore-tex works just like it should, the only place my socks get wet was from some snow that fell in through the top because I wasn't wearing gators.I expect these boots to last a long while, the sole will be the first thing to go I imagine. If you weigh 300+ lbs though, these are probably not the boot you want to go with. But for anyone around 200lbs this is one awesome (extremely light) boot! These boots run 1/2 size large (as do most hiking boots), but that's good because it allows room for an extra pair of socks and keeps your toes from smashing into the end of your boots and prevents lost/black toenails. I ended up getting the all black boot from another etailer, but if brown or red is your thing how can you beat $32 off?

I got these really for the sale price
and they looked very cool.
Got them in and Tried them on . First off they run about a size larger.
These have the worst fit very cheaply made . They have zero support on the ankle!! They are thin!!! like a sneaker !!!
The boots are horrible I am sending mine back.
Really don't expect a fit like an asolo or montrails these boots are trash.
I went out today and spent 200 on a pair of asolo's worth every penny!!!

Slippery when wet!

Rating:***

Wore the boots for a 50-mile trek through southwest Colorado last fall, carrying a 45-pound pack. Have worn them around the hills of Pennsylvania ever since. The boots live up to their name for great ankle support. I've got bad ankles. Even though much of our Colorado trip was through rain and mud, there was never a moment that boots weren't up to the task. And they didn't leak. Once we got out of the wilderness, I replace the inner soles with Montrail's Enduro-Soles (the ones you warm up in the oven and then fit to your feet) and the boots have a much better fit and feel to them.

Two drawbacks: 1) The boots are VERY slippery on wet or icy surfaces. I've never owned a pair of boots so slippery (other reviewers also noticed this). Took a walk this morning down our icy road and nearly fell twice. 2) The laces are flat so they don't snap into the hooks at the top, and they can be very frustrating to lace up especially if you're wearing gloves or your hands are cold. (The laces easily drop out of the hooks so it takes several tries to get all in place before tying.) This might be remedied with new, round laces.

The boots weren't perfect when I bought them -- I found one of the lace hooks was still filled with the casting metal and had to be opened up. The rough edges that remain have caused the laces to shred in that area. (Now that I know what the hooks are made of, I'm afraid to crimp them down further so the laces don't pop out so easily -- they might break.)

Would I buy the boots again? Probably not....but I'm wearing them this summer for the 500-mile Colorado Trail.

They're OK

Rating:***

Pretty cool for weekday and weekend jaunts in your basecamp, but I wouldn't suggest that you take them to the trails. They won't hold up. But I must say, they are waterproof - in light to medium rains - so don't try to cross any shallow streams as taunted in the description. And, they have a lot of contrasting designs that makes them nice to look at and to be noticed. Oh well.
