For freeriders going huge in the backcountry or the park, there's no better protection than the bomber 3-layer GORE-TEX Pro Shell construction of the Free Thinker pants from The North Face. The all-mountain cut is roomy without being bulky, and the stylish design looks great on and off the run.
Ideal for 100+ day skiers and heli-ski guides, The North Face Men's Free Thinker Pant uses the burliest Gore-Tex Pro Shell fabric available and a unique polymer infusion method to reinforce high wear areas. The Pro Shell uses a woven backing to cut weight and improve durability, and The North Face uses a polymer infusion technique to reinforce areas around zippers and pockets—the areas that receive the most abuse. This creates an incredibly durable pant that is still lightweight and flexible. This drop seat, waterproof breathable pant's detachable high back and suspenders keep the snow out on powder days, while The North Face's chimney venting system keeps air flowing through the pant while hiking. A RECCO reflector built into the Free Thinker pant may help ski patrol find you in an in-bounds avalanche.
To the man who braves the worst roads for the best storms, saves for months to buy a heli trip, and tries a new backcountry line every time he skips the lifts, The North Face presents the Free Thinker Pants. Gore-Tex Performance Shell 3L fabric staunchly denies water and wind while allowing man-made moisture to escape. Infused polymer reinforces high wear areas, creating an incredibly durable pant that remains lightweight and flexible. The detachable high back and suspenders and StretchVent gaiters keep snow out on powder days, while The North Face's Chimney venting system promotes air flow as you hike. The Free Thinker Pant features a drop seat for unrestricted movement and a built-in RECCO reflector which may help ski patrol find you in an in-bounds avalanche.

The North Face Free Thinker Pants are Real high mountain pants with lots of ski-specific features. Actually Gore Tex Performance Shell
| Rating: | ![]() |
After receiving the pants I discovered that they are actually 3 layer Gore Tex Performance Shell, not Gore Tex Pro as advertised by the North Face themselves (a lengthy chat with The North Face actually made them aware of the inaccuracy in their description). They are just that, a 3 layer SHELL, so a good, breathable base layer is a must. Regardless, these are incredible pants. Absolutely bulletproof and very high quality. Fit is pretty accurate, fairly loose around the lower leg. I would recommend them.

Tough pant! | |

In crapy coastal wet skiing conditions these pants worked great!Very tough pants,I would consider wearing them for construction work in inclement weather conditions. To nice a pant to get dirty though! I would only use them on short hikes and ski tours because they tend to overheat. Unless you were hiking in extremely cold conditions! They fit a little tight if you have a hockey butt,or bubbble butt when you get into a squat position!

For deep powder days this has turned out to be a really good pair of pants. The suspenders fit really well and these things are bombproof. The suspenders are detachable which is also a nice feature. Sizing seems to be dead on. Wish they came in more colors.

Yep, Not Pro Shell! | |

Heh wow I just made the same discovery in these pants while reading the tags on mine... Performance Shell instead of the Pro Shell listed here. Pretty amazing pant otherwise. If you want high-end then this is it.

| Went snowboarding a couple of times with these pants. Gore-tex is the way to go! Very easily maintained and cleaned. | |

Found a flaw | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
Found a pretty bad flaw skiing in these with high winds. The vent zips are poorly protected and when I had wind from behind I could feel the wind right through the vent zipper (it's one long continuous zipper across your rear). Unacceptable... my cheap hyvent north face pants don't have this flaw and I won't accept it from $400 pants.

GORE TEX PERFORMANCE, not PRO
| Rating: | ![]() |
After ordering a pair of the FREE THINKER pant, I discovered that The North Face has been marketing these pants incorrectly/falsely. They are advertised as being 3 layer Gore Tex Pro, when in reality, they are 3 layer Gore Tex Performance Shell. Not a huge difference, but for $400, I would expect "top of the line". Considering the fact that there are several alternatives for less than $400 and are made with Gore Tex Pro, I was a little disappointed. Other than that, I would actually rate the pant as a 5 star pant. They are well built, have everything you would ever need. Sizing is pretty true to size, but the lower leg is huge. Great suspenders. You wont be disappointed in the pant, unless (like I was) you are expecting a Gore Tex 3 layer Pro material.
