The North Face Men's Hedgehog Mid GTX XCR Hiking Shoe is as sturdy and stable as a hiking boot but lighter weight and more breathable than hikers for agility on the trail. The North Face made the mid-cut Hedgehog's upper to be abrasion-resistant and breathable, and an EVA midsole and heel air pod absorb shock and provide rebound so you can go longer. A TPU shank protects your foot from stones but won't weigh you down or compromise responsiveness. The Gore-Tex XCR membrane doesn't let water in, so you can go straight through the stream instead of hopping awkwardly across on boulders.

I've been a habitual cowboy boot wearer for as long as I can remember, but eventually having wooden soles caught up to me. Modern cobblery sure has advanced; these shoes are remarkably comfortable and my foot has begun to relax into a more natural shape. I use them for everything including hiking and even running. I'm not the type to have more than a couple pairs of shoes and so far these are living up to the job. The only reason they do not get 5 stars is that they are already showing some minor signs of wear, as these are not the kind of shoe you can repair easily I'm sure they will not last as long as my boots (10 years+), but sadly that's to be expected of modern shoes, I guess.

Wow - My husband always has a horrible time buying shoes, so I had to do a lot of talking in order to convince him to try Zappos. I order from you all of the time. I told him if they didn't fit, we could send them back and it wouldn't cost us anything, then we could try a different pair. He was skeptical, because he has a low arch to his foot and his feet were frostbitten as a child, most shoes are just plain uncomfortable. After reading the specifications for this hiking boot, he decided to try it and he couldn't believe how comfortable it was. We will definitely order from Zappos again and he'll be trying other North Face styles as well. Thank you!!

Great for not runing in

Rating:*****
I recently spent three weeks in the Zimbabwean bush working with lions. So, I wanted a comfortable, lightweight, durable shoe, and these were perfect for the job. I wore these shoes for about sixteen hours a day, and my feet didn't feel uncomfortable once. On the first day on the job I found one of my coworkers had the exact same shoes, and he lavished praise upon them as well. The only issue I had with them was that the mesh on the outside of the shoe trapped dirt/sand, and it took about twenty minutes of furious shaking to get them clean. I would also agree that the lacing system makes it difficult to get them really snug, but other that that these shoes were great.

Awesome light weight hiker... I ordered these shoes and had them the very next day. These shoes seem to run about 1/2 size too large. The traction on all surfaces is superb, waterproofing is excellent, and the comfort level must be felt to be appreciated. The mid version of the Hedgehog offers just the right amount of ankle protection, and helps keep debris out. The break in process was completed in less than an hour of hiking. These are the first pair of light weight hiking shoes that I have ever owned that I can honestly hike in all day and not want to take them off at the end of the day. Excellent job The North Face! Thanks Zappos.com for the excellent service.

North Face Hedgehog Mid Boots

Rating:*****

I've just received my boots and had them out on one six-mile hike along the Sierra Nevada ridge south of Donner Pass. A few hundred feet of elevation gain and loss. I was carrying a loaded pack with 16 lbs of water (my 3-day pack weighs 18.5 lbs). The boots performed perfectly--no hot spots, no break-in, no problems. One minor negative: the laces are way too long, and I'll be shortening them.

Expect to cross deep streams with them in a couple of weeks and wipe them out each time. Will let you know how this works. If ok, this means I don't have to carry water shoes.

Right combo of cushioning and stability

Rating:*****
Good shoe. I am on my feet all day and do a good bit of climbing and jumping. Seems to be the right combo of cushioning and support by virtue of the higher top and stiff vibram sole. I have enjoyed so far. Also I normally wear a 10.5 and I ordered a 10.5 and they are a little larger that I would have liked based on a previous reviewer that seems to think that they run small- on the contrary I would say slightly large.

Great shoes but laces way too long!

Rating:****

I have the mids and they were great on several hikes up in the Great Smokey Mountains. You will not be disappointed. I only have one issue and that is with the shoes laces. They are way too long that if you tied your shoes too tight the laces will hit the ground and become untied. Other than that these shoes are wonderful! ! !

Great Light Duty Boots At An Excellent Price! Quality of fit and finish is excellent. Wore them camping through some dry, rainy, and moderately muddy conditions. Stayed dry and comfortable with plenty of traction. Paired perfectly with wicking socks - perfect comfort from 30 to 60 degrees all weekend. Heavy enough to take some punishment, but also light enough to not feel encumbered at all.

Great for mixed-ues running

Rating:****
I used these shoes extensively when rioting during the LA race war riots. I ran nonstop from Watts to Whittier crossing storm drains, lawns, parks and other terrain. They are lightweight which saves energy and allowed me to outrun an angry mob of looters while carrying a 35 lb. television on my shoulder. These were the perfect shoe for the occasion.

Tremendous Value - I got two pairs, one for me and one for son. Size was right on with medium thick socks. We used them for some moderate hiking in Denali Park in Alaska. Summer weather and limited water but boots performed flawlessly. Comfortable from the moment we put them on in addition to being light weight and durable. EXCELLENT VALUE.

Negative Reviews:

Pass on this shoe...

Rating:**
I have had my share of hiking/trailrunning shoes, going through 5-6 pairs per year. This shoe leaves something to be desired... I bought it as a light hiker, not a trail runner. The hedgehog is very low cut and not stable on rocks and tough trails. My ankle feels like it wants to roll out of the shoe. The laces will not stay tied even when double knotted. The sharks teeth sole pattern was not durable at all. Tore one of the "teeth" off within 10 minutes of hiking in the Phoenix area.. Not to bash this shoe entirely, but lastly the heel area blew a seam. These shoes are now my painting shoes and went back to solomans for trail running and light hiking.

Rating:**
Coming from a frequent North Face customer, I have to say I was disappointed in this boot. I purchased to replace my Vasque Catalysts for a Grand Canyon overnighter this past November. I was surprised at the overall lack of ANY cushioning within the uppers which seemed to rub the toes a bit much. Sadly these were returned for Merrel Chameleons.

Not a bad boot.

Rating:***

I have yet to use them on a hike, but i have been wearing them often going to mall and else where. They look great but confort is average. I have had hiking boots that are more comfortable but, they are not that bad. I can't wait to try them out on the trail. The first day I had them on for about 8+ hrs and my left little toe was a little sore and the bottom of my feet were also sore. Maybe if it had a little more cushion it would have been better. I did spend most of the day walking on concrete. They may be better on the trail. Over all not bad but not the best. If you are in to looks they are a great boot.

Durable/Good Looking/Blisters

Rating:***
Good - I went on a 3-day backpacking trip with them over tough and varied terrain - trail, rocks, scrabble, snow, etc. They were lightweight, but had a firm enough vibram sole that my feet did not get tired from the rough terrain. The gore-tex was nice also b/c my feet did not get wet through snow and marshy trails. I really like the look of them. Not so good - I did however get really bad blisters on my heels despite two layers of socks. It's most likely my fault b/c I did not break them in. I was going to use some other hiking boots, but on a test hike I got blisters and went out and bought these b/c I had successfully backpacked with trail runners before.

Hedgehog Mid

Rating:***

I bought the boots for my husband before we traveled to Banff and Jasper for a hiking trip. He said they were comfortable and wore them instead of his running shoes around camp as well as on our day hikes. We hiked about 55 miles or so and near the end of the trip he noticed the sole began separating from the upper. It seems like they're great for comfort, but not the most durable hiking boot.

Rating:***

The shoes were great. except they are a bit narrow at the toes. I went on one hike and the shoe was very tight at the side of my toes. These shoes seem designed for a narrow foot.

Nice Shoe - Not Made for Wide Feet

Rating:***
Nice shoe, but not made for wide feet. Shoestrings did not stay tied and the after a hour or so of use, the top of my feet began to ache.
