Perfect for Wisconsin winters

I owned a black version for 2 winters until I melted the sleeve on a hot pan handle (yes, I did). I went to buy a replacement and had to pay full price because all discount sites were sold out in the neutral colors. I am glad I bought the dark blue. It is nearly black, but will still work well with anything brown. My original jacket had a troublesome zipper, but this one works a lot better! I guess I would agree with others that the zipper needs to be more consistent; sometimes it took 10 attempts on my old Metropolis parka before it would work. I wish it were a bit more water repellent around the neck area (I get wet!). I am 5'3" and 120lbs (carry weight in lower half) and the small fits well without catching on my rear. Other than that... perfect dog walking jacket that doesn't look stupid. To me, worth the money.

The best jacket for moms!

Hello, I live in Wroclaw, Poland and I asked my parents to buy me the North Face jacket in the US. This is the best jacket I ever had. We have quite cold falls and sometimes heavy winters in my country and when I wear this jacket I feel a lightweight warmth and cozyness. I spend a lot of time outside with my baby and I never get cold. Even if you rush out of the house and forget a sweater, this jacket is just enough. The secret of this great parka is that when it's super cold you're warm and when it's not so cold you're also warm, but not boiling. Plus, when my son spills something on it, I just come back home, take a piece of material, some water, wipe it off and no stain is left. Enjoy magical wintertime in this jacket. Big thanks to North Face!!!

Great coat, but not the warmest

I think I've finally reached the age where I'm looking for warmth first and style second (gasp!). I've always liked the look of this coat and reviews were good, so I decided to get it. I live in DC, where winters aren't completely harsh, so it's okay for DC. It does, for the most part, break the wind and repel water. However, when I went home to New England for Christmas, the warmth of this coat left a bit to be desired. I still love it, it's true that it's lightweight, comfortable, fashionable, fits well, etc, but it's not the warmest coat in the world. A warm sweater and another layer or two underneath would still be necessary.

great jacket!

this is a great jacket- i've only had it for a few weeks but it's very warm, doesn't allow any drafts in, is comfortable sitting and walking. it doesn't weigh me down like other winter jackets. the hood fits well and is warm (it's got some down in it). rain beads up on it, rather than soaking in. the only thing that isn't great is the sleeves- they're a bit tapered so the end of the sleeve is a little tighter than the rest of the sleeve. maybe inner cuffs would be better, to keep the cold out, but not be snug at the ends. overall this a great jacket, i don't mind a winter stroll anymore :)

Its a great jacket!

I ordered this jacket because I saw many good reviews however my experience was not perfect. I ordered the vintage white and I love the color and fit was true to size. The only problem was while stepping off of a large rock the zipper easily ripped off of the jacket at the bottom. North Face is going to replace it but currently exchanges are taking 8 weeks so Michigan winter will be close to over if not over by then. I love the jacket and now that they are on sale I am tempted to buy another even though the first one wasnt the best experience. STILL love the jacket and how warm it keeps me!

Excellent coat excellent value

I didn't pay for this coat as it was a "hand me over" from a friend heading to warmer clims. I had no idea what it cost. Now that I know the price i can say unequivocally that it is worth the price, every penny. I am never cold in this coat and have spent some long stretches outdoors in it. I have several nice coats but when I go to the closet this is the one I choose.
It compacts into a tight ball for storage in a tight space like car airplane or just to pack. It launders in the machine. What is not to love about it?

Good, Warm Jacket

Finally broke down and decided to buy a warm coat. This one is about as stylish as you can get while wearing a down coat, but it is also extremely warm. I have been wearing it right over my clothes for the day on bitter cold days and have been quite warm in it. Jacket runs big, but not too drastically.
My only real complaint is the inner pocket placement, I don't think anyone bothered to try this feature out before they mass-produced it- as you have to unzip the jacket most of the way to reach the inner pocket (which is about at waist-level).
Overall, a decent buy.

Nice and toasty

I love wearing this coat around campus. It's warm when I have to walk to class, which can be up to forty-five minutes at MSU. I held off on getting a bus pass and saved the money by getting this coat.

When it comes to sizing: I would definitely get a size smaller. I generally wear medium tops and was iffy about getting a small jacket after reading the other reviews. I am so glad I did! I even have room to fit sweatshirts, large sweaters, and even small jackets under this coat.

Overall, I am very satisfied and would recommend getting this coat.

Warm in Nebraska!

I purchased this coat after trying a few others that made me feel like I was wearing a sleeping bag. I'm 5'6", 140 lbs. and fairly physically fit, and the medium is a perfect fit--small enough to look decent and big enough for a sweater underneath. I wish it was windproof, but the down puffs up nicely to make it close. A long sleeve t-shirt or sweatshirt underneath is more than enough to deal with any draft. We haven't had any subzero days yet, but the outlook is good for the Metropolis. The Montague Blue is awesome!

Runs Big, size down

I've been eyeing this coat for a few seasons now and decided it was time to purchase since it was finally on sale. Perfect for cold weather without feeling restricted, quite comfortable. I am 5'10 and 140, slender/athletic build. I usually wear a medium in North Face jackets because of the torso and arm length. I orginally ordered a medium and it was HUGE on me. I worried about exchanging for a small for fear the arm length would be too short but luckily the small fit perfectly. Overall, very happy with this purchase.

Negative Reviews:

Love the coat, not the zipper!

I bought the coat less than one month ago and from day one, the zipper was sticky. I LOVE the coat, so kept it anyway. Now the zipper is completely non-functional. Sadly, the coat is going back. Northface, PLEASE upgrade the quality of the zipper on this coat.

Neutral Reviews:

Older parka superior

I have bought two metropolis parkas from The North Face. One parka I purchased about 4 years ago and another 2 months ago. The one I bought 4 years ago is far superior. It is soft, lightweight, and very warm, has more fill, and never loses feathers. The zipper with a pull tag and snaps are made with quality metal. My new parka, the stitching is rough, the coat is still lightweight, but not quite as warm, and loses feathers. The zipper sticks because the mechanism does not quite fit correctly. I have experienced, that the quality of The North Face newer products are never as good as their past products. Try to hold on to your older items from The North Face because they are as good as it gets.
Pennyless at The North Face on 02/07/2013
My parka's zipper is stuck at the bottom. From what I have now read, this appears to be a recurring problem! I will soon be packing it up and shipping it (at my expense) to San Leandro, CA, to be repaired. In my opinion, this fairly expensive coat should have a zipper that works well, everytime, for years, not months, of wear.
