Classic bomber-jacket style, comfy fit, just the right warmth
| Rating: | ![]() |
The collar is versatile, comfortably zipping up around the neck for windy days on a boat or in snow; and looking good zipped down (open-neck style) for less chilly days. The collar has a nice down fill without too much fill. The XXL size is perfect overall for a man with large frame (I have a 42 waist and 48 chest, and the XXL size, although with size 47 waist, cinches to my 42 waist size comfortably, and the chest fits like a bomber-jacket with plenty of breathing room.) The waist drawstrings are strong elastic so you can't cinch them to exact fit, then easily get out of the jacket without constant readjustment of the waist and wrists. On the XXL size the wrist openings appear large, but fit perfectly and stylishly when adjusted with the Velcro ties, which are not visible. The left inside zippered pocket is huge and will hold maps, a pair of sunglasses and gloves. The side outside zippered pockets are lined with very smooth and plush cotton flannel and very comfy. To cinch each waist drawstring (there's one on left and right sides of waist), remember to pinch the clasp while pulling the drawstring until comfortable then immediately let go of the clasp. Don't force it, or you're doing it wrong and may eventually damage it. Also remember to adjust each drawstring to one-half of the waist tightness you require, since there are two drawstrings (one on each side). If you adjust one drawstring to your waist size (thereby not needing to adjust the other drawstring), the jacket waist will fit lopsided. The outer material is a nice matte finish and looks expensive (not shiny or reflective which looks cheap like patent leather). The down fill feels like a true quality 700 fill and is extremely lightweight. The North Face logo looks very nice and is positioned properly. I got the black jacket, and it is very sharp looking and fits goot from front and back vantage points. I tried on a North Face 800 fill jacket in a shop at Lake Tahoe, and not only did it not have inside pockets, but the back curved along the back into a tuxedo-type tail, accentuating the posterior (did I use that word wright?). Whereas this 700 fill jacket is about the same lightness in weight, but has an interior pocket (could use two pockets, but after seeing the jacket for a hundred dollars more with no inside pockets and bad form-fit, I really appreciate the less form-fitting bomber-jacket fit and huge inside pocket. This jacket should have been in the fancy Lake Tahoe ski shop!

This is one of the few products that I have liked enough to buy twice. I lost the first one during a crazy night out. After losing my first one, I tried at other down jackets (Patagonia, REI), but ended up returning those and buying another Nuptse. I use it as my COLD weather jacket. For this casual purpose, this jacket is good: it's very warm, durable, and fits well. But I do not use it as a technical jacket. I have worn it snowboarding once, but it does not make sense for that purpose because it can get wet and lose its insulating properties. And it is too bulky to fit under my shell. Reasons why I gave it four, not five, stars: neck does not have a soft liner, like other down jackets, and the zipper sometimes snags, which is could be a major problem if it ripped the nylon and let the down out. The hood is somewhat pointless, as if it were raining, you would not have this on as an outer layer because the down would get wet, and thus lose its insulating capabilities.

Great jacket to weather chilly winds and looks great too!

Hi folks, I bought this jacket from Backcountry during the toughest winter days of 2009. I used to previously bundle myself with a sweater, overcoat and muffler to walk in the brutal NY chilly winds. However, once I started wearing this jacket I didn't need any of those layerings...! Its just amazing and really snug and warm. I finally came to know why down jackets were so famous at the first place. I now usually get out with just this jacket on top of a T-shirt!! No need to worry about putting 10 layers of warmers :-) The internal lining of the jacket is really very smooth and comfortable. One more thing, everyone who looks at the jacket gets impressed :-) People really like the jacket. One thing though, I would have wanted the front pockets (to put the hands in) to be a little more deep. They are a little small for someone with large wrist size like me. However, not a major problem and I still like this jacket and hope to have this with me for years to come. ~Vaiv

I'm 200 lbs. and 6'2". My arms are, in the words of my financee, freakishly long (not that I drag them on the ground, but I was a keeper in soccer, too). So I'm used to rolling up my sleeves on most of my shirts since they tend to be too short. I was pleasantly surprised that the large Nuptse jacket that I bought was plenty long on the sleeves for me. I like the cut and fit, too. It is shorter than my previous NF jacket, but not so short to be odd. I found the Mountain Hardware Subzero jacket to be oddly short - like riding up on my navel. Could use a few more pockets on the interior - you are given one giant pocket that runs from your nipple to your waist - so glasses, etc. get all jumbled up. Otherwise perfectly fine.

I bought this jacket for a winter trip back to the UK, Usually I would use a rain jacket as typically it's wetter than colder back across the pond. I was glad I picked up the Nuptse jacket as the temp was below zero the moment I stepped out of the terminal, that factored in with the 20 - 30 MPH winds made me think of a chilly wait for the transportation to the rental car. Fear not, this jacket actually kept me not only warm but I had to crack the zipper open to vent some heat. You feel a bit like a blimp with the down but it's well worth if for the warnth this jacket keeps in. I like this jacket so much I bought the sleeveless version for thoise times when you just need to keep your inner core warm.

| I BOUGHT THE IDENTICAL NUPTSE VEST FOR MYSELF, AND THEN NEEDED TO GET MY DAD A CHRISTMAS PRESENT, SO I GOT HIM THIS. I WAS WEARING MY VEST WHEN I GOT OFF THE PLANE (I WENT WITH BURL ORANGE FOR BOTH ITEMS OF CLOTHING, IF THAT HELPS), AND AFTER LIKE, TWO SECONDS MY DAD WAS LIKE, "GREAT VEST, ADDY." THAT'S WHEN I KNEW MY DAD WOULD BE WAY PSYCHED TO GET THIS JACKETBLOCKEDKEYWORDWHICH HE WAS. THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT THEN, FOR THE REST OF THE TRIP, HE KEPT TRYING TO WEAR HIS JACKET WHENEVER I WORE MY VEST SO WE WOULD BE LIKE TWINS, AND HE WOULD BE LESS OF A DAD AND MORE OF A "COOL, OLDER FRIEND." THAT DIDN'T WORK OUT SO WELL. | |

| Another North Face Winner - North Face never lets me down! This is my sixth purchase of a North Face outerwear or outdoor product and I'll continue to look to this manufacturer 1st for all out door sporting needs. The light weight and comfort level of this jacket is fantastic. I can easily stash this jacket as an afterthought in an overnight bag or day pack with little concern for space or how it will look when I pull it out of the bag. A couple of shakes and wrinkles are gone and the down puffs up nicely. Nice and warm in a matter of seconds after putting this jacket on! It's a winner. Makes a great winter liner for my GORTEX shell as well... | |

Amazing jacket! I've owned it for one year now and it has taken care of me everywhere from Yosemite belay sessions to cold desert nights to unheated college housing. The wear and tear this thing has taken is considerable and yet it shows practically NO damage. I've slept directly on the ground and even chimneyed up a climb in Joshua Tree (sharp granite!) and never had a rip. Most of my other gear comes from different companies and was a bit hesitant to go with TNF, but the quality I got for such a low price is amazing. My only gripe is the hood, pretty useless unless its raining and then why would I be wearing down anyways?

My husband bought me the Nuptse jacket when we first started dating and I loved it! This is why I thought of this jacket when purchasing Christmas presents for my parents. They live in Idaho, which has been pretty cold this winter. They called me a couple days later while they were out walking the dog to tell me how much they love the jackets, especially the lining in the pockets because it's soft and they were very warm. In my opinion, they run slightly big, I am 5'5" 110 lbs and I got the X-Small...It fits perfect...the best jacket for cold weather! P.S. Backcountry is the best...great prices and lightning fast shipping!

I bought one of these just before this year's deep freeze and snow in the Northeast, and this puppy kept me toasty. The fit is a little snug, but if you go one size up, you should be gold (I'm 5'8", 165#, and I got the large so I could more easily layer underneath). The neck is a little tight when completely zipped. In terms of performance, though, this jacket is the cat's meow. It shrugged off snow and light rain without a problem, and it's most definitely warm. I haven't used it yet on any winter tripping, but for everyday use, you couldn't want more.

| Really warm and light weightwise. doesn't weigh you down. unfortunately, north face tried so hard to make the jacket lightweight that they didn't make the material protecting the down inside that thick and a little rip that i thought i could deal with that happened during mailing the jacket to me turned into a big one within a few hours of wearing the jacket. | |
