I sort of stumbled upon this jacket a couple of years ago when I was looking for something to take winter camping. I wanted something that was decently lightweight, packable, sturdy, and warm, and this seemed to fit the bill. Well, two+ years and a whole heap o' adventures later, this is what I've learned from my good ol' Nuptse. First, it's not the lightest down jacket out there, but is still light enough to not be a burden, and it packs down to about the size of a camp pillow. Next, it's bomb-proof. I've used it cutting and hauling logs, skiing through trees, and generally beating the crap out of it, all with nary a hole to show for it. I'm pretty confident that my kids will steal this from me someday. And finally, this jacket is definitely warm. In fact, it's probably too warm! I don't wear it around town because I have to take it off any time I go indoors. I wore it over just a t-shirt on a showshoe trip in sub-zero temps and had to unzip it!
I only have a couple of complaints. It fits very big. I'm 5'10" 185 lbs and the Small fits great. Also, it's a chore to cram it into the tiny stow pocket. But if you're looking for a solid jacket that will keep you warm in the most frigid of situations, the Nuptse is a great choice.
I've always been a fan of the Nuptse jacket. This version 2 is even better! Don't let the lower fill number fool you. This is heavily stuffed with 700. It's beautifully designed not to look like a giant puff ball.
Its fine with just a t-shirt underneath at 15 degrees. This is my "go-to" jacket when its very cold outside.
I'm 5'8" 155 pounds. The jacket fits me just right. I did wish the torso was a bit longer but I can understand why its not a parka.
I got the asphalt grey/heather grey combo. Perfect color. The North Face logo stitching is very low key. Unlike the photos, one will not notice the stitched logo at first glance. This is good if you want a low-key jacket. Look for a different color if you want your jacket to scream "North Face".
The North Face Nuptse 2 Down Jacket is a great jacket for cold weather. The weather in NYC can get extremely cold and windy. The Nuptse 2 can help keep you cold in fridig weather without weighing you down. The Jacket is extremely lightweight. Layering it with a hoodie will add extra warmth, keeping you comfortably warm in cold weather. It would be cool it they added a Napoleon chest pocket. I'm not a big fan of velcro closures since they normally lose their ability to keep things close after time, and the sleeve cuffs have velcro closures. But aside that the Jacket has proven to keep me warm. Too soon to comment on durability, since this is the first 2012 - 2013 Winter Season that I've owned and worn it.
This is a very good jacket. Packs down very small and is lightly insulated. Feels extremely warm, so, goes without saying but I'll say it anyway, get it for mountaineering, climbing, not for city wear. I tried wearing it a few days around the city and it was just too warm.
Extremely good jacket! Just one complain, no hood. I saw a review that said it did, under the collar. I checked but didn't find anything, no opening or anything that would allow to unfold the hood. In the review, the person mentions it took them years to find it, perhaps it was a previous model.
Still, if you don't need a hood, this jacket is very good.
I ordered the The North Face Condor Triclimate Jacket and decided to also order this liner based on my past experience with ordering cold-weather gear. Glad I did because when I first tested the Triclimate Jacket with the Apex ClimateBlock liner that came with it it didn't stand up to the windy low-teen's weather. Since it gets below 0 degrees F here in Iowa I needed more and this liner fills the bill. It is lightweight but affords great warmth . It was compatible with the Triclimate Jacket so it's an easy process to switch between the two liners.
