Overall pretty great

I got this in the Brook Blue/Graphite Grey color a few weeks ago. The picture makes it look a little more blue but it's actually a mint color which I like way better so it worked out! I have a Dell Latitude E6510 which is 15'' and it does not fit in the laptop sleeve because of the thick padding at the bottom of the sleeve (which would be great if I had a smaller computer). It fits if I just put it in the main compartment, but then there is not really padding for it. I don't carry my laptop too often so I can manage, and there's plenty of room for what I need to carry on a typical college day- a 2'' binder, a folder, a textbook or two, my planner, an umbrella and a makeup bag. I love the second compartment with all the pockets and the front pockets are super convenient also.

Organization realized

Purchased for college a year ago and it is still serving its purpose. I take 2-3 classes a semester and all textbooks as well as my 13" laptop fit nicely. The front mesh pocket is the perfect place for quickly accessing my FC planner and the clip insures it won't fall out. The small zipper compartment above it protects sunglasses and breath mints, just in case. Deep mesh pockets on either side hold my 32oz Nalgene's securely. The front zipper compartment is an organizers dream! Yet another shallow zipper comp. carries my make-up, post it notes, while multiple pockets hold pens, phone, etc. The grand poobah pads my laptop securing it with another centered clip AND fantastic amounts of room for textbooks. LOVE IT!!!

You'll grow to love this bag

When I first bought this bag for law school, I felt it was too "tight" inside. It was hard to put the laptop in the sleeve and even to take the books out and put them in. However, just after a few days, the bag (and laptop sleeve) loosens up. I would definitely spend the money on this bag. I have the purplish one and it's gorgeous. I carry a laptop, 2 thick casebooks, a 5 subject notebook, another smallish textbook as well as my wristlet. It all fits! Spend the money and buy this. No one in law school should be using a Jansport! :)

I just received this backpack and I already love it.
The only downside is that the buckles are light orange, not coral colored like it is displayed in the picture.

Negative Reviews:

Poor Redesign

I bought the Women's Recon backpack last year and loved it. Over the weekend, I went to buy one for my mom for Mother's Day, only to find out that it has been redesigned. The laptop sleeve portion in the older model offers more room (for more than just a laptop, like magazines, etc). Also, the front pouch in the older model is more flexible (I could easily fit a travel pillow inside). The side pockets used to have drawstrings so you could put items other than water bottles, now since they no longer have drawstrings, if you put something other than water, it will just fall out because it's only elastic. Finally, the clips in the new design are super tiny and quite annoying to un-fasten. Why redesign something that was working so well? Please bring back the old Recon design!

Women's Recon Backpack color not as pictured

I purchased the graphite/coral orange backpack for my HS daughter. The bag pack is the correct size and the graphite color is as pictured. The parts of the back pack that are pictured as coral are actually 2 different colors coral as pictures and light orange which clashes with Coral. This cheapens the look of the back pack and I am surprised and disappointed that North Face would sell such a poor quality item-surely this item should not have passed inspection!! My daughter has not used the product and we more than likely, will be returning the item

Not as pictured

was hopeful to receive this bag without the color issues some previous reviews stated but had no luck. it came with straps pale orange in color but the back and zippers were the nice coral color as in the picture. i've seen someone with this bag with matching coral straps and am disappointed in the inconsistency with my order. great size overall though.
collegestudent05 at The North Face on 03/18/2013

Backcountry is great, however, the color of the product advertised was not. We ordered what appeared to be a bright pink color and ended up with more of a grey pink. The image on the computer is very deceiving, please update the image.

The pink backpacks actual color is nothing like it in the pictue...

great pack for school too bad its so heavy

Love the recon. Wish it was a pound lighter. I don't like the new laptop carry compartment. The back of the pack is so stiff but I guess that's to protect a laptop. I don't like the reflective hits on the new recon. I prefer the old recon's reflective hits.
