Great All-Around Jacket for 3 seasons
| Rating: | ![]() |
| I was looking for a nice warm jacket that I could wear during cold winter months here in the Northeast. Something to take out on hikes as well as wear to work and look good. This jacket fills those criteria and more. Very light and packs down small to fit in a pack and also fits nicely under a shell if the rain/snow gets really intense. If it's a mild snow or rain storm this jacket repels it well. The hood is ideal for wearing over a baseball type cap that I wear to keep the rain off my glasses. It's probably designed to fit over a helmet and looks a bit strange if you wear the hood over your head with nothing else but it is more than funtional if not a bit thin compared to the rest of the jacket. It's a snug, altheltic fit and probably runs small for North Face gear as I am a small guy and this fits great - a rarity for TNF gear which usually runs too large for me. It also has a good combination of pockets with a napoleon chest pocket on the outside, which works great when worn under a shell and a very deep internal pocket that can hold a medium sized water bottle or a some large gloves. Highly recommended. | |

perfect all around jacket for climbing, backcountry skiing...
| Rating: | ![]() |
| i bought this jacket the day i returned from a trip into the teton backcountry. i skied backcountry lines for a week in -20 degree weather and needed this jacket!! it is perfect after a sweat slog on skis or a stairmaster bootpack up a peak - just at the moment you cool off and the wind drops your body temp with a swift hand. the hood provides great warmth and wind protection and fits over a helmet. one napoleon pocket on the breast and two handwarmers on the stomach. this piece will be very handy in the pacific northwest as it insulates when wet and is very durable. the jacket will accompany me on all backcountry ski trips moving forward and will be a great warmth piece when belaying in the early and late climbing seasons. hell, i will use it after paddle trips on washingtons very cold rivers. use this puppy freely and often.... it will last. | |

The perfect backpacking jacket?
| Rating: | ![]() |
| I bought two of these jackets from Altrec...one for backpacking/kayaking and one for urban/mall wear. I used it for a Wind River/Wyoming early summer trec.and an early season, week long Voyageurs NP kayak trip in wet/windy weather. Stuffs very compact into it's own pocket...extremely light weight...is water proof (tested in downpours)...fits big enough to layer under if the layer is not too bulky since it is overall somewhat of an athletic fit. I usually wear a large and ended up with 2 mediums since the cuffs allowed the sleeves to slip onto my hands too far. I love the tighter fit the mediums allow but maybe most would like the "average/normal" fit which you get by ordering your actual true size. I tried many many jackets and with the weight/fit/compact stuff size not to mention being extremely attractive (tons of compliments) I had to order another one...it was that great!! | |

Deceptively light...I was a little skeptical at first if this jacket would keep me warm as an outer layer during the cold Canadian prairie winter. Well, after the first really cold snap this year I'm a true believer! I wore it around town in -20 C (-4 F) temps with a light sweater underneath - no problem. The ONLY annoyance I have with this jacket is the design of the hood. As it is basically integrated into the collar as one piece, you can't really have the collar zipped up without the hood either on, or awkwardly bunched up at the back of your head/neck and around the ears. On top of that, I find the hood a little too big and without a drawstring or any way to tighten it it really doesn't keep nasty weather out effectively.

Water and windproof, warm and worth every dollar spent

| Living on the east coast we've had our share of snow, rain and cold in the last couple weeks. I wore this jacket right out of the box, over a t-shirt and thermal longsleeve and headed out. The jacket is incredibly light, and the insulation is superb. I was breaking into a sweat with a normal walking pace. The hood closes up along the neck, and is snug around the head - kept water, ice, and snow out. Water beaded off the hood, shoulders, sleeves. After three days of use, and brushing some dirt off the elbows, the jacket looked like it did when I first put it on. Quality you expect from North Face, with superb performance. | |

Wonderful Product | |

I bought this jacket for inbounds use in Utah (Alta, Snowbird, Park City, etc) so I was looking for something semi-warm that would hold up in a snowstorm. This jacket is perfect for the application I had in mind - I throw on a wind stopper shirt underneath for big storms, and just a long-sleeve t-shirt for sunny days. My only gripes are that the collar pulls up against my neck and face due to the design of the hood, and that the hood has an elasticized opening instead of a drawstring. Even with those two inconveniences, this is a great jacket - just the right amount of weatherproof-ness and warmth.

Red Point, I almost rated it a 5.

This jacket rocks! It is super versatile, light weight, and waterproof. You can layer with it on cold ski days, and is really good looking alone. It is one of those coats that made me think to myself, "Dang! I wish I would have had one of these years ago!" The only drawback has got to be the fact that it doesn't have pit zips. It is so toasty sometimes when I am wearing it indoors for style not function (I know its lame) that its too much. It also stuffs into its own pocket! I still grade it a 4, but wouldn't part with it, I love it!

Warm! Cozy! | |

I have always wanted a down jacket that didn't make me feel like the "stay-puff marshmallow man" and the redpoint is the way to go. The jacket is so warm that I can wear it around when temps are in the teens. I havent had a chance to wear it in ugly stormy weather but I imagine it will hold up extremely well. My only complaint is the cover material is a little too thin. I poked a very small hole in the sleeve material with a stick that made more damage to my arm than it did to the jacket. Stupid stick!

Undeniably the best | |

In my opinion the best multi-purpose on the market. Insulation is AMAZING for how light the jacket is. Not a bulky feeling like most insulation jackets. Take it anywhere, snowshoeing, boarding, skiing, to a party or the movies...THE BEST! Fits into day packs with ease! Im 5'10" 165lbs and bought a medium and still have room to add the right base layer to deal with certain conditions! If you like to stay dry, keep blistering wind off your skin and cozy on the slopes, YOU CANT GO WRONG WITH THIS JACKET...i just cant say enough!!!

Great lightweight jacket
| Rating: | ![]() |
| Great jacket. i am a business traveler and needed a thin, lightweight jacket that looks professional and still manages to keep me warm even through the winters of the great lakes and new england. I was pleasantly surprised just how warm this jacket really is! The fill is very light and compactible and the jacket takes up minimal space in my carry on. Be aware that it is not completely waterproof so I bring a hard shell when in the pacific nw. It does seem to repel water quite well in light rain however. | |

Redpoint Comparison | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
| The 2003 ($99) model of the Redpoint Optimus Jacket is a very good jacket with it's included features. Removable sleeves, sleeve pocket, hood cinch, and primaloft insulation. The 2005 version of the same jacket is ($199) and has less features than the 2003 model. The 2005 version is without the above 2003 features listed above at twice the cost. The only features that are better on the 2005 model are that the primaloft feels like down, and the "kiss" of hyvent to protect the wearer from water absorption. If I has a choice I would choose the 2003 version of this jacket. | |

Not to bad | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
While the jacket is very stylish and light, it really doesn't seem that warm i wore it in 40 degree weather and the wind cut right into it and I was kinda cold actually. The stuff sack on the XL does not work properly cause it is made for the Small, Medium, and Large only. It almost took 2 people to close the zipper. Im going to keep the jacket, but ill only use it for a light jacket i dont feel it will hold up in 20 degree weather or lower. If you are going to use this jacket you might want to pair is with some kinda of shell maybe.
