Excellent Backpack!

THINGS I LIKE:
This stylish backpack has so much room for books and everything I need! The main compartment is very spacious, I am so happy with the amount of room in there! The straps are high quality and when I put it on, I don't feel as much stress in my shoulder area. The area that touches your back is also padded. I absolutely LOVE the laptop compartment. The back that touches the laptop is very hard and is very protective. The very bottom has something padded so your laptop is protected below as well. Those who have tablets and iPads, there also is a sleeve for them. The organization pocket is nice as well. I can organize all of my pens and calculator in the pockets. There are soo many pockets! In the photo of the organization pocket under the zipper pocket and above the pen pockets there is also another pocket split into two. Behind the zippered pocket (not the mesh one) there is also a Velcro large pocket. And deeper into this section of the backpack is also a spacious area that I could fit a smaller book into. The front of the backpack has zippered pockets that do not connect. One goes on top of the other. The very front has a hard strap, not sure what else to call it, that looks like a wave (in the photo it is right above the SURGE II on the bottom) That you could clip a water bottle to or key chains, and whatever else you please. THINGS THAT COULD BE IMPROVED:
On the outside of the backpack there is a small pocket on the side that zips, (you can see it from the back view of the backpack) when my laptop is inside, I can't really fit anything inside of it, it gets tight basically. Also the very top handle of the backpack, where I grab my backpack when it is on the floor and what not, is very thin! It kind of hurts my hand when I lift the backpack when I have several books in there. If there was padding it would be so much better. Laptop compartment only zips and unzips halfway. There is most likely a reason, but I just don't like it. The buckle straps that go from front to back are annoying. (you can see them in the front view, they are purple) When I have them buckled it is hard to unzip some of the compartments because I always zip and unzip from the sides, this issue would be resolved if you zip and unzip from the top. I still give this backpack a 5 because the things that are "wrong" with it are just based on my preference.

I have tried several messenger bags (Osprey, Haiku, and Sherpani) and one backpack (High Sierra) trying to find one that will hold everything I need while on campus and is still comfortable to carry. I am a student and I live an hour from campus, so I need to make sure I have everything I need, which makes for a heavy backpack! I did a lot of research before ordering this one. It was the largest The North Face offered with the most organization. I also ordered a Patagonia one that was comparable in size. I think it was their 32L one. The Surge II won hands down. Tons of space for all my books, laptop, cell, lab coat, hairnet, pens, calculator, highlighters, pencils, wallet, feminine products, and the list goes on and on. To top it off, it is so comfortable. My last backpack aggravated the problem areas in my back and neck, but this backpack doesn't just hang off your back, it becomes an extension of your back. I didn't even know it was approved by the American Chiropractic Association until I got it. I was unsure of paying this much for a bag, but my last one was $80 and only lasted a few months...bummer quality costs so much, but if you can come to terms with the price, you will not be disappointed! Fantastic bag! No wonder almost everyone on campus carries a North Face bag of one type or another! Thanks North Face and Zappos!

No regrets!

I really love my new backpack from NorthFace. I had shopped around and looked at many different alternatives, and this was the best functionality and design I could find for this price range. I love the multiple compartments, especially the separate laptop compartment with a sleeve for a tablet as well. I have never owned a NorthFace backpack before, and was nervous that there would be something that would make me regret purchasing this bag- but I have been pleasantly surprised and only have two complaints about this bag. The first is that the front pouch has a curved zipper design, which I have found troublesome to get open at times; the zipper gets stuck in the rounded edge and I have to come at it from another angle to get it open. If I didn't have this problem, I would have given this bag 5 stars. The second complaint is a lack of professional color choices. For the women's fit they only had black, purple, pink, and white color accents. That was kind of a let down as I needed this bag to look more professional and had to get a boring black/black bag to achieve that look. Just because I want a women's fit backpack doesn't mean that I want a purple or pink bag and I wish NorthFace would figure this out. All in all, a great backpack that I would recommend to anyone.

High School Student Review

I'm a sophomore in high school and this year I decided to invest in a north face backpack. I got my Surge II from Dick's Sporting Goods after much debate between other models. When school started, I soon realized that this was the best backpack I've ever purchased. It not only fits all of my heavy textbooks and portfolios, but it also takes a lot of pressure off my back, making it more comfortable to walk to classes and to and from home. It has plenty of compartments for my pens, pencils, water bottle, ID, phone, and more. There is also a padded laptop and tablet compartment big enough to fit and cushion my 15" mac and ipad. The arm and waist straps are very high quality and allow plenty of air flow for comfort. The waist straps tuck away nicely when I'm not using them too, instead of dangling about. The material is both waterproof and durable and the YKK zippers are of very high quality. In addition to all of these great features, the backpack is also very stylish, yet professional looking. I purchased mine in black to alleviate cleaning. Overall, I love this backpack. It has plenty of room and compartments for my AP student life, it keeps my items protected, its stylish, and I feel like it's going to last for a long time.

Amazing Booksack!

Just got this book sack in Brook Blue / Graphite Grey and i absolutely love it! It feels great on and is super cute! There are tons of pockets which is a really good thing. A few things that i didn't notice when buying it that are good to know are that: the two vertical zippers on the front are actually two different pockets that overlap each other, there is a small pocket on the bottom of right side of the book sack, perfect to store a few things such as your phone, which gives you easy access to reach it without having to take off the whole book sack (if you look closely in the bottom left hand side of the second picture you can see it), the laptop pouch has a cushion at the bottom so that whenever you slide it in the book sack or put the book sack down it doesn't hit the floor, and the bottom waist strap shown in the picture can be tucked away and you can't even tell it's there! it has plenty of room and the material seems like it would be water resistant. i am in love with this book sack and can not wait to start using it this year for college, it is definitely worth the money!!!

Best Bookbag I have ever owned!

I just got the surge ii in the mail today and it met all of my expectations. I am a soon to be high schooler so all of my books fit and it is so comfortable. There are so many pockets and zippers. One of the ffeatures I like is that there is a pocket to put the buckles in. The bookbag is so padded in the back you dont feel any of your books or binders. I got the brook blue/ graphite gray and the color is so pretty. Im so excited to use my new bookbag. I also love that it has a place to put laptops, ipads, and kindles because my school allows us to bring them. And it is worth the money even though it is kind of pricey but, from what I can tell it will last me through high school and maybe into colleage.
Madysen at The North Face on 08/22/2012
Love this backpack! I have looked at so many backpacks for school this fall, but none of them were exactly what I was looking for, except this one. It's feminine, made for a women's body, very good size and it's comfy too. It easily fits my 15.5 inch laptop, in a separate pocket from everything else, which is a must for me. It also easily holds a binder, notebook and 2 books and more! I love the color and it's very sleek it holds a lot, but it doesn't stick out a mile or look super huge when all loaded up! I also love that it Has a middle pocket so its really easy to keep all your things organized. Kind of pricey, but worth the money if you want a bag that is feminine, can fit your laptop, books and more! So glad I bought this bag!

great backpack!

I ordered this in the purple, even though i would rather have pink but that wasnt available. It does not have as much space as I would like it to, i can only fit in two binders and my folders in the large pocket, and it gets pretty stuffed in the organizer pocket. even though it stuff the pack to its max, when i put it on I cant feel a thing! it feels like i am not carrying anything which is great, usually if i put the same amount of stuff in another backpack my shoulders will be so sore and in pain. this is a great backpack and definitely worth the money because i will always be comfortable. the quality is also very good so I know it will last me a long time.
LInda1995 at The North Face on 09/01/2012
This backpack might seem expensive but it's well worth the money. I got this backpack when my older North Face backpack was just too small. This backpack is HUGE. I can fit everything I have for every class in this thing (I'm a junior in college). I actually Don't use this one too awful much anymore because I just don't need that much space any more. But I do us this backpack when I travel. I recently went to Buffalo for ten days and I took this backpack wa the only thing I took. With some careful packing I got everything in. If you're looking for a ton of space in a backpack and you want something that is going to hold up through the years, go get this backpack. It's money we'll spent.

nice pack for around town and traveling

The organization is nice--bigger pocket for books and other things, laptop pocket with built-in sleeve, pencil/phone zone, easy to get to sunglasses or eyeglass case with nice soft lining. Ipad fits great in the laptop sleeve. Haven't tried a laptop but it doesn't seem like you could fit a bigger laptop in the sleeve itself. But, no reason you couldn't pop one into the area outside the sleeve. It's compartmentalized so it wouldn't get scratched by having other stuff in there.

The pack is a little smaller than I thought it would be. If you need to haul a ton of stuff, this might not be for you. I think it's a pretty good size for around town or for a very small carry-on.

Negative Reviews:

Surge 2

I had wanted a Northface bag for a long time. After much research I decided to take the Surge 2. From my experience it is better to actually go to the stores and see if the bag meets your actual needs.
I really liked the purple and blue bag but it was really light and I knew it would get dirty soon. It would have been better if Northface had even more designs and colors for the bags. Anyways I was really happy when the FedEx people arrived with my bag!!!! I had waited for a whole week! But I was extremely disappointed when I got the bag.....there wasn't enough space. I was going to use this bag for my sophomore year in high school. This bag has a laptop, padded compartment, with space for ipads and kindles....but it does not open all the way which annoys me....then it has a empty compartment which is medium-sized....but which could fit one book, two binders, and notebooks....Then it has an oragizational compartment with plenty of spaces for pens, index cards, post its, etc..... There is also a cushony small space for a cell phone...in the front it has zippered pockets which is big but not enough that you can fit a notebook or two....just maybe stash some papers.... But I must say that even with the load I carry on my back...I don't feel it at all...because of the padded backstraps compared to other bags I have used which caused me a back pain. Since I dont carry a laptop in the laptop compartment, I use it for my really thick book.... Suggestions I would say: needs two large empty compartments....the laptop compartment is fine....the organizational compartment, I think, is a waste of space, could be smaller, so more space could fit for notebooks. It also has one pocket for water bottle. Overall I love the black color and the comfort when I carry it...It really isnt worth $125.00 just because of the lack of space, at least for high schools tudents and definitely not for college. But I definitely can't wait to use it...onece the CTU strike ends!!!!
