Why would you pack a mere fleece mid-layer for your alpine journey when you could bring The North Face Women’s Thunder Down Jacket, and be surrounded by 800-fill down? This jacket weighs less than most fleece jackets, yet you’ll be prepared for subzero temperatures. Although designed to fit underneath your shell, in a pinch the Thunder will work as your outer layer in crisp, cold weather. When you don’t need it, this down jacket stuffs into its own pocket and stashes in your backpack.

My Only Jacket...

Rating:*****

I primarily wear only this jacket in SF winters, where temps might be down to the 40s with the wind chill, and I am on a motorcycle, so it gets pretty windy and cold. With a fleecy layer underneath, you could do colder temps, or snowboarding even, as it has a sealing drawstring on the waist. It's super light and comfortable and packs up easily in my backpack. The grey color is a light silvery grey, but very low key.

Cons: It does not do much for your physique ladies, it's a neutral fit, yet no form-fitting looks here. You will NOT look like the michelin man, because the jacket is so lite, but its a bit boxy.

Sizing: True to size. I am always a S in NF and i got a S. I am 36" 28" 37"

Overall: Great mid season outer jacket, and i guess it would work great as an underlayer, but why hide it?

a down must have

Rating:*****

This is a phenomenal down jacket- it is extremely light weight, packs very small, but is also incredibly warm. I am 5'8/size 6 and wear a medium. The Thunder is a must have for the outdoor clothing arsenal/back-up layer for your pack. It provides good protection against the wind, and when temperatures get chilly it is an easy layer and light piece to throw on. I wear this out the door for ski-touring in as low as 5 degree weather, as well as an outer layer at 13,000ft in a biting cold wind to ski back down. It functions perfectly, and allows for great movement and flexibility. Reliable warmth and well cut for women, I also like the stitching and pocket placements. This is a fantastic go-to jacket for outdoor women and versatile for all kinds of activities. The weight to warmth ratio is it's biggest selling point..

versatile - and badass.

Rating:*****

I love this jacket. I originally purchased it for an expedition to the Antarctic peninsula, and it was perfect. Extremely warm, light/packable, dries quickly when damp (but not waterproof, down does not insulate from the cold when wet, be sure to hardshell for that), and great for everything from extreme cold hiking to just lounging. I've also taken it on trails with thorny bushes, and have chopped wood in it, and have found that abrasions have fared suprisingly well given the very light weight of the outer fabric. I'm pretty small (5', 105 lbs) and had a hard time finding a suitable down, but the XS is well designed and tailored. I can even manage a slim-fitting softshell over top. Highly recommended!

Girlfiend Loves it!

Rating:*****

First off, my girlfriend hates winter jackets so much that she won't wear one period. I bought this for her hoping that she would like it because of its light weight and non-bulkiness. I really scored on this one because she absolutely loves it. She wears it all the time and is never cold. The jacket only weighs about 11oz and compacts down to nothing. On top of all this, she looks smoking hot in it. She's 5'2" and 110 and she got the XS which fits perfect. Very athletic cut and is not bulky like old school down jackets. Don't underestimate the warmth of this jacket when you see how thin and light it is. Its warm!

Best Jacket I have owned!

Rating:*****
I love this jacket. I normally like to get my winter jackets a bit larger, so I can layer a fleece underneath if needed but I would have been happy ordering true to size. I got a L, but would have been happy still with a M. I got the Kiwi Green color, and it is awesome! I get compliments every time I wear it. I live in N. Japan and winters average 20 degrees. This jacket is so warm. It is so light weight and feels thin, but believe me, it is super cozy! I wish I could have one in every color! Top quality workmanship, North Face is terrific!

Love it!

Rating:****
I tried one on at a local store early in the season and loved it. It's so lightweight and soft, you don't realize you have one on. Sadly though, I didn't buy it and when I got this one at Altrec, its a little tight. I'm not sure why but possibly one was the 08 version and this one the 09. It upset me to return it but would recommend it to anyone! If it fits you, it's an absolutely beautiful coat and from everything I read, its also warm.

This is a great down jacket if you want something warm but not too puffy.
Looks: the most stylish down jacket I've seen. It's not form fitting but not boxy either.
Warmth: great for milder temperatures. It's 800 fill but it's lightweight, so if you feel the cold you'll need something warmer for a northern hemisphere winter.
Sizing: I'm 110 pounds, 5'4". According to the sizing chart I should be a S, but the XS is perfect. I can still fit thermals and a thin wool jumper underneath.

I have this jacket

Rating:****

Don't get me wrong, it's a good jacket, but almost immediately upon receiving it, LL Bean had one in their winter catalog for $100 less and so exact in style/down content, etc and everything else, I felt really stupid for paying so much.

AND

This is a LINER, don't get this jacket confused with a "puff" jacket, it isn't!! I got this hoping it would really keep me warm for a Finnish winter, I'm having my doubts since I'm still only in a November Michigan!

Good looking sport jacket

Rating:****
For once, a puffy jacket that isn't puffy! I bought XS, sizing was perfect. The black sheen, contoured fit and cinch cord adjustment all made jacket flattering. It is surprisingly light and is definitely a mid-layer; I get cold very easily and, if I don't have a lot of layers on underneath, would feel more comfortable wearing this jacket in 30 deg or above. It is a short jacket -- hits right at top of hips -- but it's practical, portable and attractive. A fun wear!

my absolute FAVE down sweater /jacket

Rating:*****
outstanding feel, fit, warmth. I LOVE this jacket, own it in 4 colors and buy it whenever it's on sale. - silky feel - low static, low crinkle - drawstring at hip to stop aircirc - high zippable neck - very stuffable - goof length, good cut I wear this as my top 'suitcoat' layer indoors all winter, dress it up or down. It beats any down sweater competition, and I have tried ALL the other brands!

Northface Thunder

Rating:*
I got this jacket as a gift for Christmas. Less than one month later, I have 4 holes in it and the down is pouring out of it. All of this is due to a day of sledding in Maine with the kids. This is unacceptable to me in an active wear coat that is touted as "Built to endure extremes of weather and terrain, Summit Series® products deliver the highest level of performance from base camp to summit." This is my first and only North Face product. I will not spend money on their stuff again. Further, when I returned to the shop to discuss repair options, the shopkeep who helped me confessed that the same had happened to his daughter with her Thunder (again, less than a month after purchase). He stated that the coat is a piece of %$#@. For the prices they charge, Northface ought to be ashamed. Certainly, this coat would not withstand a summit of any mountain if it couldn't withstand a trip to the sledding hill with kiddies. Do not waste your money.

Not quite right

Rating:**
I ordered this jacket in the surf blue color. It had bright red binding on the inside seams, and you could dark pieces of down through out the jacket. I sent it back! Otherwise, in other colors, it would have been acceptable.

fits like glove which is nice, but if you want to layer a fleece or sweater, its tight. i am 5'4", 105# and ordered the XS. sleeves are perfect length. a size S would be too big unless you want to layer... a cold snap in Florida prompted the order. i paid for overnite shipping, and it took 4 days. this is more like a sweater. not warm enough to warrant the price.
will be returning it...

not quite right

Rating:***
I tried the grey one but it has too much sheen. The length was good but the upper-arm area was too big & bulky and looked strange. I really wanted to like this jacket, but it just wasn't quite right for me. Many thanks to Altrec's customer service dept though!

Loosing feather

Rating:***

Mine is from last year's stock and it is loosing feathers each time after wearing it. I am very disappointed with the quality of the jacket considering the price I paid for it. Perhaps, the NF improved the quality of this year's version.

Cute jacket and really light weight - just a little tight under the arms - didn't allow full range of motion. Maybe the next size would have been better???
