If you live anywhere near the Canadian border, you know that the geese that used to head south in the winter now just stay put. Apparently cold and slush doesn't bother them anymore. And like the geese, you won't need to use frequent flier miles in the dead of winter with The North Face's Men's Thunder Down Jacket.

Down is known for its warmth, and the Thunder features 800-fill — the highest quality and count available. What sets this jacket apart from other 800-fill jackets is that the feathers themselves were given a waterproof treatment. Even if you're caught in slush and drizzle, this prevents the down from clumping into wet wads. Dry down improves the jacket's insulating performance. As an insulating layer, this jacket provides a high warmth-to-weight ratio, so you can fight off the cold without breaking your back mile after mile. The entire jackets fits into its own hand pocket to keep on hand as an emergency layer. It's finished with two secure-zip hand pockets, elastic binding at cuffs, and a cinch cord at the hem.

Built for cold-weather treks into the backcountry. The North Face Thunder Down Jacket is filled with water-resistant 800-fill-power down for exceptional warmth in bitter-cold conditions. The jacket is highly compressible and stows into left-hand pocket for easy storage and transport. Two zip-secure hand pockets warm hands and secure gear. Elastic cuff binding and a hem cinch cord seal out chilly drafts. Imported.

Positive Reviews:

I got to say, TNF has one of the best quality down jackets ever made. I also own a Marmot down jacket that is comparable to this one; however, I must say that TNF's thunder jacket is really soft, extremely warm and very well made. I bought a size small, being only 5'7" tall and about 155 lbs. I've had this jacket for under a year, and it has seen moderate to cold temperatures (20-30's Deg. F). I highly recommend this jacket to anyone looking for a high quality and warm winter jacket.

High Rise Grey

Very good jacket. I actually expected less after being blown away by the thermoballs I purchased a month ago. Very warm jacket, as light as a thermoball and just as stylish. The High Rise Grey is more like a silver, it's hard to tell on the pics, and the jackets silvery shine really shows off in a bright light setting creating a stylish look. I can't comment on the waterproof aspect as I haven't had rain to wear it in yet.

Not as warm as my Nuptese 2

I so wanted to give this a better rating. I got this to replace my 700 fill Nuptese 2. The Thunder has more fill, 800 versus the 700 in the Nuptese 2. It's less bulky and much lighter. sadly that does not mean greater warmth. Normally I can go outside just wearing a tee shirt with my Nuptese 2 and I'm comfortable down to the single digits. I took the Thunder out today in 20 degree-ish NH winter weather, wearing my tee shirt as usual and I got cold, not cool, very quickly! So I thought that it might be the fill was compressed from shipping so I tossed it into the dryer, set to warm, and ran it for 10 minutes. No joy, another trip outside and sadly getting cold very quickly again.
I'm wondering if the 800 fill in the Thunder does not rate the same way as the 700 fill of the Nuptese 2.
Looks like I'll keep using my Nuptese 2 and relegate the Thunder to it's stow pocket and keep it in the trunk of my car as a emergency backup of limited use. As a passing note I also currently own 2 Denali fleece, 1 Denali wind pro fleece, 1 Original Nuptese, 1 Himalayan jacket.

High Rise Grey

I was considering getting this jacket in High Rise Grey because I already have the Thunder Micro in Vanadis Grey and love it. The color looks great on the website, but when I saw it in the store the nylon shell was nearly transparent. I could clearly see the down through the nylon, especially the brown colored down feathers. I wouldn't purchase it in the High Rise Grey, but if you like any of the other colors I'm sure they are fine. Other than that, I can't really say much about the coat. If it's anything like the Thunder Micro Jacket, it's probably a great warm jacket that's breathable enough to prevent overheating.
