Plan to replace in 2 years or so
Purchased this jacket 2.5 years ago. I have worn it in the backcountry about 100 days and around town when walking the dogs, etc. It provides excellent wind protection. I live in Houston and when it rains here the drops are big and frequent. This jacket is a bit clammy but that is to be expected and is just something you get used to in humid SE Texas.
I am 5'8", 160 pounds. I have a medium. I wear this jacket with a fleece underneath. I also wear the REI Revelcloud puffy underneath.
I purchased this to replace my Marmot Precip. The Precip was 7 years old when it would no longer repel water. The Venture has the same features and I did not notice anything really all that different. I am disappointed with the Venture because it has not lasted. In an all day drizzle in Oklahoma last week the sleeves wetted out (water no longer beaded)and soaked through. My goretex does not wet out. It is heavier and bulkier, but I can rely upon it to keep me dry. My wife has an REI rainjacket made with "elements" laminated material. It is superior and I will be getting myself one. Yes it costs more, but getting one that I can rely upon for 8-10 years is better than buying two in that time and getting wet.
So far, so good.
I like this jacket very much since the fit is just about right for me, however I would recommend trying it on in person since there are limited adjustment options available (although the hood and cuffs can be adjusted somewhat). I was looking for a light-weight rain jacket, for when a full-on GoreTex (or Gore-like product) was not really necessary) and was not overly concerned with breathability, so this jacket fills that bill. It does have extra features, including pit zips, which is nice, and a velcro flap that covers the zipper. It also seems fairly tough. I wiped out on my bike wearing this thing and I expected a tear or some kind of scuff mark...but there was NO damage, I was impressed (and relieved!). Of course, I also wanted something inexpensive and this jacket really did NOT fill that bill. But hey, it's a name brand and I bought it at REI. All in all, a nice jacket and I'd buy another one if need be.
Nice jacket for rainy weather
Nice jacket for rainy weather. Good wind protection too. I wore this jacket during a driving rain storm on the Oregon coast. Wind was howling and the rain was pouring down. The jacket kept me dry and warm. I also wore it during a rainstorm in Montana with a vest underneath and it kept me warm and dry. Had a rain jacket form another manufacturer which soaked me after a short time in the rain. My only issue would be that the hood is a little big and will drop over your eyes unless you have it adjusted right. Not a big deal. Would work great if you wanted to wear a hat underneath. Best part was the price. Best deal for the money.
Love it.. Nice and dry
I though for the price it was not going to work out well, But I think it's worth every penny. Did a three day rock Climbing trip and every night we got stuck in some heavy rain and I walked out dry.. Not a drop inside the acket. I read a lot of peple's complains about this Jacket, but when this wears out I wil buy once more. I also like how it has a zipper inside for you to add a light jacket inside it. So I zipped a fleece liner in my... Perfect for hanging out on the crag while belaying a climber.. Love it....
Denitely a good buy!
Being a big fan of North Face products, I was looking for a good affordable rain jacket. This jacket was just what I was looking for. A stylish jacket which serves it's purpose!. Keeps the rain out and dries quickly. The best part, it kept me dry inside. As I have not yet worn the jacket on heavy rainy days, I will not be able to comment on how it holds up. The only con, albeit a small one is, I found it difficult to get a good view behind me, looking back with the hood on top.
Excellent rain Jacket
This jacket protected me in a down pour. I stayed dry the whole time. I use this mainly when back packing or going out on the town. Its not heavy jacket so I can wear it in warmer months when camping or during winter I just put on a fleece jacket under it. I have a heavier jacket for snow/winter but I wear this one more often. Plus it packs down small too!
a nice jacket, nothing fancy
This is a very nice jacket, nothing super technical about it, but dependable and easily stuffed into a bag for emergencies. Best for when it is rainy and a bit on the chilly side, because it does feel somewhat sticky on a hot and humid day.
A good price for a 2.5 jacket, and would recommend if you don't want to spend double the price for a more breathable solution.
good but not best
I purchased this on my recent trip to Washington state. However, after reading some reviews and going back to REI, I returned it for the marmot precip. The Marmot fit better and was reviewed as the best bang for your buck lightweight waterproof breathable packable shell.
Great everyday rain jacket
Went looking for a jacket I could wear during rainy weather around town, found it. Great looking jacket that does it's job. May not be best if stuck in a monsoon, but that's not what I bought it for!
I used this Jacket on a 350 mile ride and while riding 35 miles one day through consistent rain on a puddle filled dirt road and walked away with a dry torso. Great jacket!
