MUST have item for rainy weather!

Perfect rain jacket for being out in the rain! I purchased this jacket for my 1st trip to Germany and France in the Spring of 2012 as I had heard the the middle of Europe tends to get lots of rain in the Spring. I tried this jacket on in the store since I've never purchased a North Face item before and didn't know their fitting style. I'm 5'8" and about 145 lbs and got the Large so that I could layer a light fleece or sweater underneath - it was perfect! I was able to comfortably hike and shop in the rain with a layer under this jacket! The cut of this jacket seems like it's meant for layering, I wasn't restricted at all. If I needed to wear this jacket only to work then I would have picked a Medium as it would have a little more fitted shape, but for my purpose I needed this jacket for traveling, packing, and wearing outdoors in unpredictable weather - It was perfect on my trip! I recommend this rain jacket over the other similar or lower priced and style jacket at REI, that jacket felt restricting on my arms when I tried it on - could not layer as comfortably. This jacket also has hidden zipped openings under the armpits which I thought would be a bonus because I am intending on wearing this jacket in the future in the warmer southern US in the Spring and Summer. The jacket is very light weight when wearing it, I never felt too hot - I actually always felt like I wasn't wearing it, it was that comfortable. The material is excellent quality, it totally kept out ALL the rain I encountered which made me not mind at being outside getting caught in a storm! This jacket is totally worth the price!

Exactly what I wanted!

This coat is wonderful! I purchased this coat online in black a few weeks ago to serve as an outer layer rain jacket and am very happy with it. As a college student in Seattle, I needed something that went with everything, would keep me dry, and could fit over a sweatshirt when its chilly.

I am 5'10", with a longer torso, and narrow shoulders. I considered purchasing an extra small because of my slender frame, but went with the small to make sure it would work with a little bulkier sweaters and such.

When the coat first arrived and I put it on I was concerned it was too big. It was a little bit stiff and felt loud but seriously, after a few days of wearing it the coat loosened up and didn't make as much noise. For a moment I considered exchanging for an extra small but now I am very happy that I stuck with the small. If you are built like me I recommend the small.

The price is solid--just about the same as any other similar coat from other retailers. The black is classy, it keeps me dry and comfortable and is very easy to stow in a purse if you need to. I love it :)
Cozzy at REI on 05/05/2012

Howdy, I'm 5'2" a 36 C cup size, and wear a loose size 9 jeans, so I have trouble finding jackets that fit correctly because of my wide hips. I got a Medium, and this jacket fits perfectly, it comes all the way down to the widest portion of my hips comfortably, and covers my back pockets in low rise jeans. I needed something that could be very versatile, from a light wind breaker in cool weather to gentle rain to torrential downpours. I also needed something that would have enough room for me to layer warmer clothes under during winter months and this is perfect in all aspects. If I need to stuff it in my back pack, it balls up perfectly, and would easily fit into one of the small pouches instead of the main pack. It's super light, the fabric is pretty quiet, and I'm really glad I got something with vents, because it gets pretty humid around here during the spring and summer.

Got me through 2 weeks in Ireland

This jacket is simply amazing! I was able to roll it up and pack it in my purse, and pull it out when the weather got rainy or windy. It is super lightweight, but really does the trick when it comes to keeping you warm and dry. I normally wore this over a fleece, and the combo kept me comfortable is some truly heinous Irish wind and rain storms. This jacket is excellently designed to keep out wind and rain. The hood has a great soft bill and adjustable tabs to keep it on your head when it is windy and wet, the neck in front snaps sort of higher so you keep out the wind, and the sleeves have velcro straps to keep out cold and wetness. The bottom is slightly long, but it kept the seat of my pants dry. I also felt it breathed well, I never felt hot or stuffy. I would highly recommend this jacket for anyone traveling in wet weather.
TinaD at The North Face on 05/02/2013

Too big.

I got this jacket about 3 years ago and HAVE LOVED IT. It's lasted me until now, after wearing it at least twice a week for 3 years almost its started to look a bit worn down. I thought it was time for another "basic color" so i got a white one this last week and something about the fit is different, I ended up having to return it because it was just too big and long on me! I got the same size I did 3 years ago but I'm a bit disappointed because it was my favorite jacket and I will no longer be able to fit into any of the new ones! Anyway, everyone is saying that the fit is small but for me it was about 2 sizes too big. Did NorthFace start making the sizes larger? Off to the kids section I guess!
HaleyJH at The North Face on 04/30/2013

Great jacket, but not color-fast

While I love this jacket, and have worn it in light rain several times without noticing an issue, I wore it today in a downpour and when hung up to dry in the shower, I noticed that the water draining off it was bright pink (I have the jacket in a bright purple color that appears to be discontinued). Since I was wearing black pants, it didn't stain my clothes, but it would have otherwise if I had worn it with a lighter colored pant. I would recommend the product, but with a warning. Time will tell if one downpour is enough to rinse the free dye or not.
LanaB at REI on 12/12/2012

I live in Denver and use this jacket from September to April. Its a great shell that withstands wind and rain. Its great for biking to school and with a sweatshirt underneath, I'm both warm and dry, even in the winter. I own a lot of TNF products, but the venture is probably the most versatile one I have. Also have Marmot and MH jackets, but the Venture definitely keeps me dryer than the MH Epic. I'm 5 ft 5 and 115 lbs, the small is perfect, because I always have a relatively thick layer on underneath.

ayap63530 at Backcountry.com on 10/02/2012

Love this jacket

I really love this jacket, it does everything for me as i add a fleece underneath on the cold days and don't like hats ,so the hood is my go to hat. The only reason it doesn't have 5 stars is I want one more pocket for cell or iPod. So it is really a 5 star jacket otherwise..we have windy days here in the desert and need the wind proof jackets..I walk the dog everyday 2x a day and wear this for all but cold nights. I now own 3 of them!
Puppy walker at SunnySports on 03/03/2013

solid rain jacket

Not great for super humid conditions, but then again I am a sweater. Great brim on hood to prevent glasses and face from getting wet, great to roll up and stuff in a bag for the day, extremely waterproof.

My last rain jacket was from Marmot and lasted 5ish years before the inner lining started peeling off and it was not waterproof. I purchased this jacket because it didn't have a separate lining, so I'm hoping it will last longer! Overall, happy so far with this purchase.

I can't wait for rain!

I've wanted one of these jackets for a lonnnnng time. I'm so happy I finally purchased it for myself. I just got it in the mail today and immediately tried it on- I'm in love. Now I can't wait for spring hikes and rain! The color is amazing as well (teaberry pink), it's much brighter in person than it looked on my computer screen. I love that the jacket is seem sealed, has vents to keep cool, and that the hood can be adjusted.

Negative Reviews:

Practically Perfect Just not Waterproof

Call me crazy, but when a product by Northface says waterproof, I expect to be nice and dry when I take it off--even in a monsoon. I like that this jacket fits big--it drives me nuts that most jackets now days are skin tight like the manufacturers expect you won't wear anything but a camisole under them. What disappointed me was the dampness seeping though the sleeves and the wet spots all over my shirt when I took off the jacket. The cuffs of my long sleeve shirts got damp as well. The inside of the jacket just feels moist and cold. My work sometimes takes me out doors and I orignally bought this jacket to replace my old leaky columbia rubber jacket. When I realized how comfortable it was I was excited to also use it as my rainy day running jacket. My friends gave me tons of compliments when they saw it on me. I like the fit and the style. I'm so sad that I have to look for something else.
Bekstherunner at REI on 10/10/2012

Not a fan

I got this jacket for my wife on sale and took a chance on the HyVent material. It held up for about a year of use. It was good in light rain that didn't last long, but in a heavier, extended rain it leaked badly. It would soak in and her clothes under the jacket would get soaked. The windproofing was still fine, but on a long hike she was cold and wet which meant no fun for either her or I. It also developed holes around the hand pockets and on the arm after some use and I'm sure a little abuse. I still think it is a nice jacket, and I guess for the price a couple of years is good, but I'd rather pay for the Gore-Tex and get more use out of it.

Neutral Reviews:

Like it, don't love it

I have this jacket in the blue color in the video. I bought it to replace a gore-tex Mountain Hardware jacket that was worn out. While I really like this jacket and wear it often, it is not nearly as breathable or waterproof as a real gore-tex jacket. So I am back on REI.com to find another jacket for an upcoming trip where rain and warmer temperatures are expected.

I usually wear a 6 or 8 and bought this jacket in a small. It has a great, feminine fit. I can put a fleece under it for hiking. I like the pockets, velcro cuffs, and adjustable hood and it is great in cool/cold weather and when it is windy. But in warm weather or on a strenuous hike it just doesn't breathe. I have tried fully opening the pit zips or wearing just a base layer to no avail. It is good in steady rain for about 30 min and then starts to leak. This jacket has its place in my closet, but it is not "the one" that I hoped it would be. I recommend it with those reservations.
JRC301 at REI on 04/04/2013
I bought this jacket for my girlfriend and their were a couple of ups and downs to it, ups were the I ordered the jacket about 1 am and it arrived at my door at 12 the next day so shipping is very quick and the jacket is a true fit and looks nice the downs were the jacket is very very lightweight and it isn't white as I thought it was in the picture it is actually grey but overall my girlfriend is happy with it soo far I just thought it was white alittle thicker than it actually is. I would suggest for spring and fall but not winter in Kansas, which is were I am stationed.
Shaun - customer at Zappos.com on 02/27/2013

I have had this jacket for a view years, and honestly I wish I had just shelled out the extra cash to get a better coat. It is rainproof but doesn't keep me completely dry. Also I find myself sweating in it and no ventilation. The zipper also went wonky after the first month and its not super wind proof. I have some other NorthFace products that I do like, this just was not my favorite and honestly I wouldn't buy again. You should just spend the extra money on a jacket that will stand the elements and constant wear.

Samantha Summers at Backcountry.com on 10/02/2012

OK

This jacket is simply okay. I've been wearing it for the early part of spring in NYC (where it's been around 50 - 60 degrees) and it doesn't really keep me warm, especially when the wind is blowing. However, once the temperature goes over 65 degrees, it becomes really warm and the material begins sticking to my skin. It feels like I'm wearing a trash bag. The only really why I bought this jacket was because it was just a plain old regular jacket and for that reason I like it.
Ashley4225 at The North Face on 04/24/2013

Returned it two days later

I bought this product for the Seattle weather, while it was a nice jacket, it fit me way too big. I purchased an xs in vaporous grey and it was still too big. If you're petite like me, I recommend trying on this product before purchase.
nicholerose at REI on 02/02/2012

Too short

I tried to like this jacket. I really did. But the fact is, its too short to give decent coverage. So back it went. Also the top seems rather large compared to the bottom.
