My really sweet patagonia backpack was stolen, so I needed a new one to carry my laptop, lunch and exercise clothes to work on my bicycle. It's comfortable on my back when I am biking and fits my nalgene water bottle snuggly in the side pocket. The laptop compartment is a little small and does not have padding, but my 14 inch laptop and hard shell case fit perfectly in it. I have used it in the pouring down rain and all my stuff stayed dry. I got the plaid color and love it. It makes me feel a little bit like a hipster and I like that. My coworker said the plaid reminds her of a hemocytometer and she is right. It does sort of look like that.

In the 7th grade my chiropractor recommend (demanded) that I get a new backpack, as my spine couldn't handle the one that I had. The Yavapai was the pack I ended up with, and I couldn't regret it less!
As someone who used it through junior high, high school, and a year of college, I can say that the Yavapai is plenty capacious. Even with the laptop in it's compartment, the main compartment can hold most, if not all, of your books, folders, and binders.

Great book bag
Purchased this for my son to use as a book bag for high school. It's roomy, and very sturdy. I was concerned to find a bag that was tough enough to carry books on a daily basis, and this backpack filled that bill well. He hasn't used the laptop section except to test it, but everything fits well. My son would have liked another zipper pocket dividing the main compartment to make organizing books easier, but that is to be expected since this wasn't designed as a book bag to begin with. Overall we're very happy with the bag and he's carrying it daily without any problems.
We bought the Yavapai in black and red (school colors) for our second grader. He needed a bag big enough to hold a zippered binder (but not too big to overwhelm him) and the Pottery Barn bag he had last year did not wear well. The North Face bag is great so far. We will see how it holds up for the school year.
Nice Pack
Has plenty of compartments and is comfortable to wear. Has chest strap and wait belt, which are pluses. Has a separate laptop compartment, with padding on the bottom. Just wish they'd used a little heavier duty zipper; it may surprise me, but it doesn't seem like they are going to last a long time.
Love this backpack! All North Face backpacks are amazing. My previous one lasted me ten years--great quality! The Yavapai is fantastic--very roomy. Plenty of room for all of my books plus my laptop. I really like to contrast of the red straps against the slate grey.

spacious bag, which is perfect for travel but...
After 6 years of constant use, either for school, work, hiking, or travel, the interior lining has started to peel away, like sunburnt skin. It crumbles all over my stuff, which is gross. Also the zipper on the middle pouch (my pack is from 2006), is wearing away, so I'm going to have to find a zipper attachment for it soon. Otherwise, it's carried my junk halfway around the world and hasn't failed me. It's a little difficult to clean but I can deal. Definitely worth the $40 I paid when I bought it on sale.
