Positive Reviews:

It helps to be a blowhard

I use this for mountaineering trips. It works great on glaciers and snow fields to keep out the cold while easing the load I have to carry. It would be a better pad for my use if it had a shape similar to the Pro Lite because it would give more foot room inside my bivvy bag plus reduce the weight even more. If you never use a bivvy bag, the rectangular shape is no problem. After a long day at altitude, it can be a bit daunting to blow this thing up. It takes a considerable amount of air to fully inflate and you'll get no help from the innards like self inflating pads do but that's the price of light weight. The inflation bag isn't much help either. It's pretty small in terms of air volume delivererd per squeeze and can be frustrating to use. If you're counting grams, the bag blowy uppy thingy isn't worth lugging a few thousand vertical since you come equipped naturally with an air pump. Some of you clever folks might be able to figure out other uses besides an air pump and place to stuff the pad to make it worth the weight.

I've not had occasion to make use of the repair kit but if you need one, it's included. The outer pad material seems fairly stout so unless there are sharp pokey things right under the mattress or you have a knife fight with your tent mate, ordinary precautions should be enough to keep holiness at bay. If the worst does happen and you lose all that air blown into the pad, this thing is really thin and you'll be able to tell what species of bug is crawling beneath what was a mattress. Got a hole but no patch kit? Luckily this mattress has heat reflective stuff inside so even though it isn't comfy anymore, there's still a little insulation value so it won't be totally horrible. Maybe 85% horrible. I tried it out deflated on some frozen concrete and it was pretty cool but not nearly as bad as merely lying on a tent ground cloth without the deflated mattress. With no air inside, it's just like one of those mylar emergency survival blankets.

This mattress is is thicker than a camp rest and it's more comfortable. It's also a lot lighter and takes up far less space but it does make some noise when you move around. If you don't mind a rectangular shape and some considerable blowing, this could be the right mattress for you.

Best of the best

I bought the Regular size of this pad to pair with my Big Agnes sleeping bags. I have tried 2 Big Agnes pads (a mummy and a rectangular) and was not completely sold on the feel of them. They kind of felt like sleeping on a pool float. My wife has the Neoair Trekker and loves it. I have an Exped that is the most comfortable pad I've ever owned, but it's too wide/long and HEAVY. This pad seemed like the best of all worlds.

So far, it has fit the bill for me. I sleep primarily on my side, and this pad is excellent for side sleepers. You can let air out to find that sweet spot and it will stay there all night. The first night I used it, I immediately noticed feeling heat radiate up from the pad (I was inside). I have not noticed this phenomenon as much in outdoor use. It was also fairly crinkly at first, but the noise subsided with more use. The very grippy bottom is not ideal for use with Big Agnes sleeping bags, but I found that if I partially inflate the pad and start from the bottom, it works well. The 20" width is a little narrow for me (5'11, 240 lbs.), but I had to have it to work with Big Agnes. All in all, I'm very please with this pad. I'll have to see how it fairs in warm weather. It may actually be too hot for summer use. I haven't used it in extremely cold temps yet. Probably only in the mid 40's so far, but I foresee it working well in cold weather.

The only con I see is the silly stuff sack it comes with. The theory is that you can use the stuff sack as a tool to inflate the pad. I tried it only once, but it was laughable how poorly it worked. If you are backpacking/camping, you should have the lungs to inflate this pad in little to no time. It takes me probably less than 2 minutes to get this pad to the perfect level. This is an excellent choice for comfort and light weight.

I'll respond to myself here, from questions I asked at this product's debut (see waaaay below). The rep never answered, and other answers were just speculation, which frankly, don't cut it so well in the backcountry. I bought the pad, here are my experiences after 10 months and 40 nights of use in summer, fall, and winter conditions:
- I'm as warm a sleeper as I've ever encountered in the backcountry, yet I don't recommend using the All-Season directly on the snow/frozen ground, or with just a tent floor between you and the white stuff. R values can be hooey when you easily feel the bite of the cold snow through your pad and through your 5 degree Western Mountaineering bag, which is what happened to me. As much as I hate the redundancy, I personally recommend something like a RidgeRest pad underneath your All-Season to create a true barrier/insulation from the cold. Other people may have different experiences, of course.
- Durability: definitely better than the original Neo Air, but my All Season punctured on Night 2 of an 8 day Sierra trip. Still a mystery how it got punctured within the tent. I have carried a repair kit for 20 years, first time I've had to use it.
- Definitely not as loud as the potato chips crinkle bag sound of the original Neo Air.
- The All Season is the most comfortable backpacking pad I've ever slept on. Perfect by itself for three season use.

Comfortable, Loud.....

Needed an upgraded Thermarest mattress for a bike tour, as the Neo air mattress are the standard now I decided to upgrade. I got the large all season because it seemed like a do it all matress. I dont backpack a lot so went with a large rectangular version instead of the tapered regular sized version.

The stuff sack and provided patch kit is nice, but as suggested somewhere else you probably have to invest in a better Theramrest inflation bag if you use this for winter use, the provided stuff sack wont cut it.

For summer camping blowing it up like a matress should be fine. I am glad I got a large, sure you save weight with a regular size or tapered cut version, but this is so light and packs so small, I cant see why I would sacrafice comfort for a few less onces. Especially on a bike tour.

This is much noisier than a standard Thermarest matress, every movement makes noise. You could get a comfort cover and create a versitle base camp setup, but it would still be noisey. I guess that is the price you pay for such a light and small pad that inflates to a massive 2.5" of comfort.

One less star for the cost, but a great air matress that will work in a ton of different scenerios.

SOFT, WARM & RESTFUL!

I have used a number of sleeping pads of varying R-values, thicknesses and styles including the 1in. REI Treker, 1.5 in. Thermarest Pro Lite Plus and 2.5 in. Big Agnes insulated pad. And then came along this sweet little number. The all season Neo Air is on every level superior to each pad I have used in the past. I recently used it during an overnight with mixed rain/snow and felt NO COLD FROM THE GROUND. It has horizontal baffles (versus the vertical design of the BA sleep pad) which I found to be way more comfortable. The vertical design kinda feels like a pool float. Thats not a bad thing, just not as comfortable to me as the Neo Air design. Regarding the "crinkle" noise, yes, it does make a slight rustle but when you lay your sleeping bag on top of it, you can't hear it anyway. If you use this after a long day of hiking, I'd wager that no "minor crinkle" noise is going to keep you from a soft, warm comfortable nights rest on this amazing pad. I can not speak yet as to it's durability, but I am generally very careful with my gear anyway. I am looking for a very thin, very light mat or liner for it, just to ensure that I won't ever be without my favorite sleeping pad ever. LOVE IT!!

Worth it.

After much research and wondering why I would pay more for a pad than I did for my sleeping bag, I went ahead and ordered one. And after a weekend backpacking trip in the lower Hermosa, CO trail area, I was sure glad I did. It packs small and light which is much more of a concern to me the older I get. Its the size of a liter bottle literally. The tent was on several inches of snow and temps were down past 15 degrees. I was completely warm with this pad and could feel the warmth it held between it and the sleeping bag. I also appreciated the thickness and didn't notice the lumpy packed snow and pinecones frozen to the ground that I was laying on. It does make some noise when you move around, like crumpling paper, but the advantages it provided more than made up for that. My buddy had some other pad and not only was he uncomfortable from the rough ground, but moisture and cold made their way up through his pad to his bag, which makes for a miserable night that high up and that cold. Luckily he had a good bag. Bottom line...best backpacking purchase I made recently.

Light, Compact, Comfy

Over the years, I've gone from solid Ensolite pads (cut down to 60%) to the early inflatables, the self-inflators, and most recently to this ultra-light inflator. The Neoair is thick enough to be comfortable on pretty much any surface and warm enough for 3 seasons. I used it at 30F under a 35 year old North Face 20F bag, and it was fine. Its true benefit, however, is its light weight and compactness. No more rolled solid foam on the outside of the pack. This one rolls down into a 3.5 liter stuff sack inside my pack, where it's safe from damage or loss. My only complaint is that it's a pain to inflate, which is why I sprang for a small battery (AAA) powered inflator from Camp-Tek. Fits the valve perfectly and fills the mattress quickly. I'll put up with the few extra ounces for the convenience. My wife has a Big Agnes, which is warmer, but bulkier. You can't go wrong with either. The Neoair seems "crinkly" in the store, but when you're tired, you'll never notice it unless you're a very light sleeper. Definitely a worthwhile purchase even at the crazy prices they're asking for air mattresses these days.

Fantastic Sleeping Pad

I'm somewhat minimalist, but also comfort driven. I have a shoulder injury that requires me to lighten my carrying load, and requires me to have a cushioned pad. I baught this sleeping pad for use in spring and fall backpacking. I already owned the summer version. Both are great! They're both lightweight, supportive, have good R-values that are accurate, and are very compact. I've never needed to make a repair for either of them, but repairs are quick and easy. I would suggest that you buy a repair kit anyway, just in case. You do need to be a little more carefull of where you set up camp and take a few extra minutes to clear any sharp objects from the area before use, but the comfort, weight, and compactness of these pads make the little extra work well worth it. Much more comfortable than a closed cell pad and much lighter and warmer than most other inflatibles. Pricey, but worth every penny. Some people have complained about the storage sack pump feature not working well, but I've had no problems.

Awesome product

I needed to replace my lost, old Thermarest self inflating pad, so I began my research. When I discovered the Neoair All Season, I knew I found my next pad. I got the large because I'm built like a football player (6", 250 pounds, broad shoulders). For the extra five inches of width the weight and pack size are a no brainer. The large still packs so small and weighs so little that I am stunned. The stuff sack doubles as an inflation device, and if done correctly, really makes having a non self inflating pad no big deal. With practice, you can inflate the pad using the stuff sack in less than 2 to 3 minutes. Just follow included instructions. Addition of a complete repair kit was also an awesome touch. I have a bad back with multiple surgeries under my belt and this pad is perfect for me. Extremely pleased with the Neoair All Season. Warm, comfortable, light, durable fabric, and really packs down so small. Pricey, but worth the extra change.

amazing!

I purchased this product looking forward to a backwoods Vermont camping trip. Before I had the opportunity to use it there though, I had company at my house, and ended up sleeping on it in my living room. As far as the noise that a few people have complained about...it's nearly nonexistent. My mom, who was one of my house guests, was trying to figure out why I would pay so much for what looked like a very simple air mattress...till she laid on it. It does an excellent job of keeping you warm, and is very comfortable. On my trip to Vermont, it kept me comfortable and the slip resistant coating kept me and my bag securely on the pad, even on an inclined side of a mountain. Every morning as I packed up I was also grateful for how small it packs up. Great product, well worth the price.

Negative Reviews:

Loved it... until it went flat

I bought this pad a few months back and must say I have loved it until last week. I have slept on it approximately 15 nights in total and found it a breeze to inflate with about 35-40 breaths. Packing is great as it takes up almost no room and it is ultra light.

Then I woke up the next to last night of my last trip to a flat pad. I had to blow it up twice during the falling night to get through until morning. It is a slow leak and I am going to try and find the leak this week. Even if I find the leak it will be a real pain to fix as it did not include a repair kit and living in Costa Rica means I can't just bop down to the REI and pick one up. Another negative to this expensive pad... should have at least had a repair kit in my opinion for the price. I will update if I am able to repair it as I really did love the pad when it held air. I would have probably still given it 4 stars if Therm-a-Rest would have included the patch kit.
GoPrimalCostaRica at REI on 11/11/2012

Great until it doesn't hold air

The 1 Star rating that I have given this bag is solely based on its failure during a recent backpacking trip on the AT in Tennessee. I have used this pad approximately 20 nights. Until this recent trip it has been superb...comfortable, compact, light weight...everything great. HOWEVER, even though I treat my lightweight gear very gingerly and have been very careful with the NeoAir, it failed. The pad developed a slow and undectable leak. Given this, no matter how good the pad, I consider it unacceptable and potentially dangerous in very cold situations.

Sounds Like Smashing a Bag of Corn Chips

Terrible design; while laying on this mattress, the slightest move creates the sound of someone smashing a bag of corn chips. This would be a nightmare for light sleepers. As I turned back and forth on this mattress, I also heard "popping" like when someone is popping bubblewrap; I don't know if that meant chambers inside were breaking, but it is way too noisy for me. It is also narrower than another equivalent popular mattress, even though they are both listed as having the same dimensions.

Leaks

I bought this pad for a 3 month motorcycle trip through Europe and Asia. A few weeks into the trip the pad developed a VERY slow leak. Too slow to detect using soap bubbles but nonetheless fast enough to leave me hitting the hard ground around 3 am. Now I have a very expensive piece of junk.
Tom McKinnon at REI on 08/08/2012

Neutral Reviews:

Nice try, but still needs work.

After reading the reviews on the original Neoair pad (noisy, seemingly delicate, no stuff sack, no repair kit included), it seems that Cascade Designs tried to make some improvements.

The good:
The All Season pad includes a repair kit and a stuff sack that is supposed to also be a pump sack. The All Season is also constructed of significantly thicker material but is still fairly lightweight, especially given the claimed R Value of 4.9. The pad easily deflated ad rolled up to about the shipped size and I had no problems fitting the pad and repair kit into the sack.

The not so good:
The pad is still noisy--instead of sounding like you are crumpling potato chip bags all night, you will sound like you are rolling over cellophane. Not a BIG improvement, but better than it was. I suspect that the reduction in noise is mainly due to the thicker material used for the cover.

The really bad/just plain dumb:
Okay, if you want to use a stuff sack as a pump sack, it has to be airtight or nearly so. Otherwise, all the air that is supposed to go into the pad leaks out through the pores in the fabric. What were they thinking?? Honestly, it's like NO ONE at Cascade Designs actually tested one of the sacks before they put them into production.

The work around:
You can blow up the pad he old school way without worrying too much about letting moisture inside, because there is no insulation to ruin.
If not for the pump sack that won't pump, the noise might be worth the warmth--if the pad really does perform to specs. I'll be taking the pad into the field next month and will try to post an update.

I would still recommend to a friend, but give them the straight scoop first.

Crinkly noise

I slept on this in my living room and found it very comfortable. I could feel the warmth radiating up from the pad soon after lying down. The pad is also light and packs to a small size.

Unfortunately, I found the pad a bit noisy whenever I moved, especially when I rolled over. I assume it's the pad's reflective material that sounds like crinkling plastic. I tried to get used to the noise but it kept waking me up whenever I rolled over. Apparently, the sound doesn't bother other reviewers though, so you may want to order the pad and try it for yourself.

Light and compact, but noisy.

The spec's are right on: light, compact, comfortable, etc. However, every time I'd move on the pad, with or without my sleeping bag, it would make a lot of noise. It not only bothered me consistently throughout the night, but also my partners, who were more than 30 years away.
