Try this but make a small change

My cousin had the trekker lounge, a newer model than the version I had been using for years. I was jealous that he easily converted from sleeping to sitting and I had to fumble with removing and inserting my pad each time.

On a canoe trip, it's one or the other, since the pad rarely (if ever) gets rolled up and put away.

As a backpacker, it's still work, since the product assumes you will remove the poles, but that's time consuming and, quite frankly, a pain, even with opening up the inserts a bit with a knife.

What I found is this:

Don't remove the poles. Let the air out, fold the pad in three and roll it up sideways. It's the same size as the alternative, without having to remove the poles at all. If you do it this way, you can cut the straps off the top (meant to secure the roll) and save weight.

Win-Win!

Still adds bulk and weight for ultralight minimalists, but having a chair is a luxury item that borders on necessity.

Life Saver

Amazing product. My friends showed it to me a few years back and I just had to get one. I am a cycle tourist and we don't have the luxury of carrying chairs. Usually there are picnic tables but now you can have a picnic table with a seat back. We also just went to France for three weeks and we quickly found out that they don't believe in picnic tables so every night we were cooking and playing cards on the ground. My dad did not have the lounge and he was pretty bummed out because me and my friend both had one. He was skeptical about it at first but when i let him try it for an evening, he was instantly hooked and now he is getting one for Christmas. The poles are a little time consuming but after taking them in and out for 3 weeks straight, you develop strategies for how to do it easily. Thanks for the great product.

Great Product!

Like many other reviewers, I love this product. It goes without saying that a chair with a back is a godsend after a day on the trail. And the nicest thing about this sleeve is that you never have to take it off the pad. It helps protect it from punctures, and it rolls up nicely to throw in my pack. The only negative is that it does add about a pound to your pack weight. But to me, it's worth it.

I agree with other reviewers that the stays (poles) in back and bottom of the chair can be a problem. They are a pretty tight fit in their sleeves, and it can take a few minutes of cursing and swearing to get them in and out (particularly out). So, I trimmed about a half-inch off each of the four stays, and they now pop into and out of the sleeves without any problem. No hesitation in recommending this product.

great idea but...

After a backpacking buddy brought a camp chair on a trip, I realized I couldn't live without one of my own. Because I already had a thermarest I decided on the trekker lounge. I like that you can leave the sleeve on and just unclasp some webbing and sleep on it. Thermarest thought of everything--you can remove the stays and roll the whole thing up, but it's a huge pain! The stays are very difficult to take in and out so my friends are all sitting comfortably long before I get my chair ready. Then I have to do it again to pack up. The whole setup is also pretty heavy (thermarest, chair, and stuff sack to keep it from getting punctured). My chair is much more padded, and I'll stick with it, but it's not perfect.

Essential piece of gear

This thing has transformed our backpacking trips, it is very very comfortable and turns your thermarest into a dual use item. The only complaint I would give it is that the straps for clipping it together after is is bundled up are not well thought out. They need to go sideways to the mat rather than longways because what idiot is going to take the trekker off the mat everytime for break down. Leave it on the mat, fold it up to the length of the stays then roll it so that the stays can be rolled up as well. Here you need horizontal straps to buckle it up. Oh and too many slits to put the mat in, just have one at the top with a zipper and done, like the exped.

I don't mean to sound redundant of previous reviews but this chair makes camping, backpacking, or anything where you need a rest so much more comfortable that I feel it is worth reiterating. The Trekker is lightweight, protects your pad, and gives your weary back the rest it deserves. If you can master removing and replacing the stays (which at first can seem like quite the chore) then you can convert it quickly and kick back while your friends sit on rocks and lean against trees. If your worried about spending the $$$ on something that seems less than necessary I would strongly recommend picking this item up. You won't be sorry.

Converts sleeping pad into lounge chair

Have bought two and the reason I had to buy a second was because I had not secured the lower part of the pad into the seat area with the two buckle straps provided and it flipped open when I got up and landed on my backpacking stove which was on at the time. Melted a nice round hole in the cover and pad. A velcro fastener or a solid loop would be quicker to convert from chair to sleeping pad over the buckles. Thermorest suggests sticking in the back rest pocket, which I have not tried. Normally I cook to the side so it had not been a problem.

This chair is the way to go. I would have a hard time camping comfortably without it. I'm by no means an ultra-light minimalist, and consider this chair a must pack. I have the 25" version for my prolite 4 large and it is great. I used to fold my mattress in half and stuff it in a stuff sack, then put it in my pack. Now I just remove the back stays and roll it up and strap it to the top of my pack under the lid. Super comfy and way supportive. I'm 6'2" and 250 and it supports me no problem.

Works great w/ my Mattress pad

!Be sure that you have an inflatable mattress pad to use with this - otherwise it's useless to you!

I Use with NeoAir mattress pad and it is very comfortable. Different than a crazycreak chair - less firm support.

Saved my mattress pad from getting a hole in it (camp fire).
I give it an A!

Only con is that it's kind of a drag to set up and break down so that you can compact it all the way (just gotta remove the metal stays from the fabric before you put it in your pack).

GREAT BUY!!!!

This has to be my favorite bit of gear I have!! I took it everywhere, the beach, the mountains along the river on rocks. It held up great and looks just as good as when I bought it. The lounger setup is awesome and the extra cushioning when you make it a chair is great! The poles can be a bit if a bear to get out, but only have to do it once, so not so bad. I recommend this to anyone!!! The best thing I bought by far!!!

Probably just fine for full length pads

The REI website gives no indication of this, but this chair is designed to work with full length 20 inch sleeping pads. My boyfriend and I both have 3/4 length 20 inch pads. He is a lanky fellow and I am pretty short, so I decided to get the Trekker Chair for me and the Trekker Lounge for him, since I figured it would give him some extra height. Not so. The back was the exact same height as the Trekker Chair, and since it is really supposed to be for full length mattresses it didn't work out well for the 3/4 length. I exchanged the lounge for the regular trekker chair, since my boyfriend couldn't distinguish between them, comfort-wise.

It worked well enough that if I was planning to get a longer mattress in the future I'd put up with the fit problem without complaint, but we are both happy with the 3/4 length mattress for sleeping. The one advantage of the Lounge is that it has quick release buckles, but I think I can sew some after market quick release buckles into the Trekker Chair using upholstery thread.

I did not attempt to remove or replace the poles/rods. They were in the chair when I got it and I can't imagine what advantage there would be to removing them, so I don't see what the fuss is all about. That said, I am not that much of a backpacker, so perhaps there is some magic way to fold it that makes it smaller if you take the poles out. To my thinking, you have to pack the poles anyway so you may as well roll them up in the chair, but maybe other people know something I don't.

Pole removal a deal killer

The support poles are supposed to come out of this thing but this is practically impossible to do. As such it doesn't roll/pack with ANY degree of convenience.

Product should be redesigned so poles come out easily OR it folds, rolls, and compresses the other direction.

Also, side-release buckles on tension straps would be unnecessary if the straps were a few inches longer and not stitched at the ends.

Also, I would like to see this product available with compression straps so you can fold it in half lengthwise and roll it with ProLite 3 and 4 pads.

The pluses of this product are great: Very comfy. Fully protects Therm-a-Rest and eliminates need for stuff sack.

However it's too much hassle to remove the pad from the chair and the pole removal flaw was a deal breaker for me given how pricy this thing is and how easily it could have been remedied. If you get one take it car camping or anywhere space/convenience aren't essential.

Nearly Impossible to Disassemble

Instructions are printed on a tag so it is easy to know how to set it up. Once set up, it is comfortable. The problem comes when it is time to remove the poles to stow it. This step is impossible. Nice idea, but the execution totally fails.
