Excellent kayak rack | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
| Great kayak racks! We were warned that the J-rack style kayak racks were harder to load kayaks onto for shorter folks than the traditional style saddles. We decided to buy these racks despite the warnings for space-saving reasons. What we discovered is that the covered pads on these racks allow you to load the kayaks from the back of the car and just slide them on. We load them flat rather than on their side and then I just flip the boats on their side. Despite being 5' 6", I can easily do this by myself. These racks are well-made and easy to get on and off the car. I usually take them off after use unless I am going paddling multiple days in a row. They hold our kayaks very securely and the included bow and stern lines are well-made and easy to attach to both car and kayak. Being able to fold the rack down is a real plus. Another nice feature about Thule is that you can order virtually any part for any of their racks online. The only improvement I would suggest (as others have mentioned) is the ability to lock these racks onto the rack bars. | |

Functional, Solid, Cool Factor

| I have five different kinds of kayak racks, this is my favorite (three thule, one yakama, one homemade of wood). While it is easy to remove (unlike the old ones that required allen wrench), it is highly functional, solidly built (so far), easy to use, holds my 9.5' recreational kayak as well as my 18 foot sea kayak. Best? It folds up when not in use so you don't feel like you need to remove it any time you travel. Thule is SO much better than yakima it's not even funny (round bars? ALL boat racks turn sideways when you slide boats on!--THULE has rectangular bars so that NEVER happens. This is REALLY a problem with anything other than a small, short car). Seriously, Yakima is overrated. Thule rocks. They also come well equipped with instructions, reorder information and the best straps/buckle bumpers on the market. | |

Great Product | |

| This is a great rack for any Kayak, it went on easy, and once the boat was loaded held prefect. I have played around with foam pads, and other racks for years, and noticed the time spent on the tie down the kayak took to much time, and depending how you did it would always get the indention in the bottom of the kayak, after a long drive in the hot sun. It attaches and makes loading the boat easy, leting me fit two boats on a small honda accord roof. The only reason I gave it 4 stars was the face that there is no lock down for the kayak rack to the roof rack, which when living in Brooklyn NY comes into factor do to the ease of stealing it. Besides that its great | |

Worth its Price | |

| Needed to take home a pair of brand new 50lb W/S Tsunami kayak on my Subaru Tribeca with factory-installed aerobars. Was a bit apprehensive at first since it didn't look very rugged and durable. Much to my amazement the tie down straps and ratchet rope pulleys that came with the package kept both boats from flying off at 60 mph for a 1hr drive! CONS: The manual screws make it easy to steal the racks and the kayaks. I highly recommend Steelcore lock straps. Lastly, the tie down straps are difficult to get around the kayak for short people like me. | |

Easy to install/use | |

| Bought this while picking up a new kayak at the store after comparing several other types of racks. Pretty easy to install on my Ford Explorer factory roof rack; I did it in the parking lot of REI without any tools. Was a little nervous not being able to "test" it first with a light load, but I threw my new W/S Tsunami 145 on there and drove 90 miles back home without a problem. Folds down easily when not in use. Great kayak rack! | |

Rust stains all over car top
| Rating: | ![]() |
| Nice, functional design. Not a perfect fit for all boats. Fittings rusted quickly after first use, liberally coating my new car's roof with rust. Research at EMS stores, among kayakers, and other kayak stores suggests this a consistent problem with this rack system. Only way to use it is to replace nuts, bolts, etc. with Stainless Steel. Would be better if Thule simply used appropriate materials for this expensive rack system. BTW Yakima BowDown rack seems to avoid this problem and provides a more flexible fit for a wider array of kayaks. | |

depends on what your using it for

| This is a great product which is very simple to install on your car. With that being said, I returned mine to the store after using it three times. I bought it to transport my kayak to northern Arizona lakes to escape the hot Phoenix desert. The two times I drove up north I was all excited and had the kayak in place just as the directions stated. (which are simple) The only problem with my trips were driving up the mountains and having a lot of crosswind which Arizona generally does. This caused the kayak to eventually come loose and I had to slow down a little and stop to adjust the kayak twice. I then used the kayak to travel to a nearby lake (20 min from home) This drive a whole different story. The kayak went on good stayed where it should have and came off just as easy. Basically no wind excellent product, lots of wind and large kayak not that good. | |

| I got this and instantly had rust stains all over my vehicle. Overall I am happy with it, but Thule needs to do something about the rust. I am recommending it, but with the caveat above. | |
