Constructed of impact-resistant, long-lasting engineered resin, this carrier is both lightweight, and extremely durable. The 579xt has a quick and easy mounting design, and comes with a pair of ratcheting tie downs, as well as two straps and buckle protectors.
The Thule Canoe Carrier is a set of 4 bookend style padded cradles that give your canoe's gunwales a soft place to sit. The included set of ratcheting tie downs makes mounting your canoe up quick and painless. The bookend style system gives superb lateral stability to your boat, though for long trips bow and stern lines like the Quick Draw [THU0029] are necessary. If you're loading a canoe by yourself, the Outrigger [THU0020] makes life much more pleasant.

| Quick four day road trip to paddle. Nine hours each way, running through high wind storms, passing trucks, heavy rains, etc. Rain was so heavy at times the canoe was cutting a wake in the air. Ok, not really, but basically, I put this carrier through about everything short of an ice storm or tornado on this trip, carrying a 17' Wenonah Spirit canoe (lot of bow freeboard if you're not familiar with the design, rough on lateral wind when on the roof, royalex, about 70 lb). The canoe flexed, but never moved a millimeter. I was never worried about the boat shifting or moving in any way, as the rubber they put on the gunwhale rests has just enough tack to it to hold the boat very well. This is a great carrier. | |

The shoes not only keep the canoe from shifting, but keep a great reference point for balancing the canoe back on top. The straps that come with the kit are awesome - quick tie down ratchets that work with a single touch. A lot of thought and experience went into the design of this system. If I ever find myself having to tie a boat down the old fashioned way, I'll be sorely disappointed. | |

I bought these to secure a canoe to my Thule roof rack. It has worked great as there are four supports that latches on the the racks that prevents the canoes from moving. The straps are also multipurpose, so when not using the canoe you can use it for other things to secure onto the roof rack. | |
