Mods Needed For Jeep Liberty, 4 of 5
| Rating: | ![]() |
| Jeep owners beware - this rack does *not* fit the Liberty with rear-mounted spare without some modifications. You must decide if it's worthwhile. For me, personally, it was. I got everything I wanted in a bike rack at a great REI sale price. Read on..... The Thule web site indicated this rack fit my Jeep Liberty, so I bought it and brought it home. Assembly in my living room was a snap, and in a few minutes I carried it to the garage for the final install. With the unit folded, it didn't take long to realize there was not enough length for the main shaft to clear the spare tire when folded - bummer. All it needs is about 6" more to clear the spare, so (for my vehicle), my only option was to remove the spare. So I did. Fortunately, I also have a great new set of tires so I'm not too concerned about the spare right now. After a trip to my local RV supply, I found a robust 12" receiver hitch extension that should nullify my dilemma. The price of the receiver hitch extension negated my sale price savings on the bike rack . Oh, well...... Decided on the Thule over the Saris Thelma because of price and security. This rack secures your bikes in two places - at the rims and over the crossbars - for maximum peace of mind. Our maiden voyage took us 20 miles over varying road surfaces, RR tracks, Michigan-sized potholes, and construction zones to get to the state park we wanted to explore. Despite all the jiggling, the bikes never budged and I almost forgot they were behind me. The more I use it, the more I like it. Loading and unloading bikes is pretty easy. The ratchet-style "quick load hooks" are generously padded to protect the top tube of the bike, and the wheel cradles are easily adjustable to fit different sizes of bikes. Securing the rims in the cradles is easy, and the rubber grippers that fit over your rims work fine. Once you put everything in lock-down mode, you can rest assured it will not vibrate loose. I was able to load and secure both our bikes in under five minutes with a minimum of fuss, and it gets easier with practice. The only reason I didn't give this product a 5 star rating is the issue with fit. Other than that - it's AWESOME ! (see attached photo) | |

Nice rack, but get a cable lock

| This is a great rack. I wanted a hitch rack for my Ford Fusion and had an 1 1/4" hitch installed at Rack & Road. The Doubletrack is very easy to install and has a typical, high quality, Thule feel. I had it on out of the box in about 20 minutes. It holds bikes very securely and I haven't noticed my Ellsworth Truth's frame getting messed-up by the hold down "hook". It folds out of the way, which is a big advantage over cheaper versions of this type of rack (Swagman, for instance). I bought the Thule STL2 locking hitch bolt, which snugs the rack to the hitch well and prevents theft of the hitch (although I remove the rack when I'm not using it). My only complaint is the locks on the bike hold-downs - DON'T expect these to prevent someone from taking your bike! I got to a ride last week and forgot the key -after locking it at my house - and by simply loosening the wheel trays and sliding my bike forward I had the bike off in about 10 seconds. GET A CABLE LOCK! I wouldn't even go in to pay for gas without one. Also, the keys that are supplied are very soft & malleable - I broke one off in the lock and had to stop by a locksmith to get it out - and order 2 keys from Thule, to boot. Otherwise, I am very happy with this rack - no danger of driving into the garage with the bike on top! | |

| Stable (I-95 highway speeds and dirt roads). Easy and quick to use. Easy to move out of the way to lift tailgates. Only drawback is that it is not expandable to hold more than two bikes. Highly recommend to anyone needing a 2 bike rack. | |
