Thule Sidearm Bike

Cycling > RacksRated: ***** by 14 reviews.

Rock/Creek Outfitters

The Sidearm Bike Mount by Thule, in my opinion, is one of the best bike racks Thule makes and the easiest to load.  The only thing that is required is to be able to pick your bike up, and the rest seems to be done for you.
No taking a wheel off, no contact with your car or frame, just pick up your bike, put it on the tray and with one arm holding the frame, you just rotate the support arm towards the front of the bike and then with about two clicks you ratchet the bike onto the frame.
Fits almost any size frame, suspension and tire width. With a wheel range of 20-29" and a tire width of 1"-2.6", just load and go, its that easy.

  • Fits Wheels from 20-29”.

Ideal for unusual frame shapes

Rating:****
I run 4 bike racks on top of my Subaru Outback. 2 are fork-mounted Yakima Steelheads, 1 is an upright Yakima Raptor, and the Thule Sidearm. Rack system and bars are Yakima. I bought this rack after reading reviews from other mountain bikers. Sometimes I don't like fooling with taking off and putting on the front wheel, so I like to have the capability to put the whole bike upright on the rack. The Raptor is cheaper and does the job, but its two negatives are: 1) it grabs the bike by the down tube (potentially scratching the paint), and 2) it doesn't fit some of the more unusual frame shapes (like my wife's Specialized FSR XC). The Sidearm has no contact with the bike's frame or paint and since it grips the bike at the front fork/wheel, will fit virtually any frame. I've used it now for several months on extended trips to Tahoe at speeds of up to 80 mph and my bikes have remained rock solid. The rack works well with my Specialized Epic, my wife's Specialized FSR XC, and my daughter's 20" Trek mountain bike. The only real negative I have is that I question how secure the bike really is when locked to the rack. Although I've never tried it, I suppose a clever thief could figure a way to simply remove the front wheel and wiggle the frame off the rack. But then again, if a thief really wants your bike, he'll find a way to get it. The locking mechanism does the job IMO to deter casual theft, and by combining it with a cable lock, it would be an added deterrent. My only other gripe (and it's minor) is that for bikes with V-brakes, I find that it's better to disconnect the left and right brakes from each other so that the Sidearm's attachment point doesn't bear down on the brake assembly. It only takes 10 seconds to do, but is a minor annoyance. No problems with disc-brake equipped bikes. Also, like any roof-top carrier, it works better on smaller cars where it's easier to lift the bike up onto the roof. Despite the premium price, I like the rack so much that I've ordered a second and will be replacing the Raptor.

Thule Sidearm 594 Roof Mount Bike Rack

Rating:*****

I purchased this rack here for multiple reasons. The first being that they are not available in Europe and it is the only rack that will accept my bike - a GT ID XC 2.0 - without removal of the front wheel. I already own two Thule ProRide 591, but the down tube on my GT is too high for the arm to reach. Getting back to the sidearm 594. It was easy to assemble and fit to my Thule roof bars. The bike feels very solidly attached when sitting on it. In use it is better than the Proride 591 as the tray is wider so the wider trays are easily accommodated and the side arm on the Sidearm 594 is easier to operate being the side that you load the bike whereas the arm is the other side of the bike on the Proride 591 and the clamp gets rather close to the chain rings on our other GT which has a conventional style frame. All in all, I would thoroughly recommend this rack. Why did I choose this site to supply it? They were the only company that were set up for international orders that I found on the Web and I certainly recommend them to anyone with their good communications and efficient delivery. The only downside for me was the UK's import tax which made it a very expensive purchase, but one that I would still do again. Thank you.

USER FRIENDLY BUT BE CAREFUL!!!

Rating:****
THIS RACK IS VERY EASY TO USE ONCE YOU INSTALL IT. I USE IT TO CARRY MY LEFTY 29ER, THROUGH AXLE MTB AND ROAD BIKES. STABLE TO OVER 100MPH AND NOTHING TOUCHES THE BIKE'S PAINT (THERE IS NO NEED FOR THE ARM TO COME ANYWHERE NEAR A FRONT BRAKE). HOWEVER, THERE ARE A FEW ISSUES. 1ST, YOU HAVE TO DISASSEMBLE THE UNIT IN ORDER TO CONFIGURE IT TO FIT THE DRIVERS SIDE OF A VEHICLE. 2ND, THE ARM DOESN'T COMPLETELY FOLD FLAT SO IT STICKS UP MORE THAN NECCESSARY IN THE WIND (IT IS A BIG, BULKY, NOISY UNIT, ALWAYS A LAUGH TO SEE THEM ON A PRIUS!) FINALLY, IT IS VERY, VERY EASY TO STEAL A BIKE OFF THIS RACK WHEN USING JUST THE FACTORY THULE LOCK CORE ON THE ARM. ALL ONE HAS TO DO IS RELEASE THE FRONT WHEEL FROM THE FORK POP THE REAR WHEEL STRAP AND BINGO YOUR PRECIOUS BIKE IS GONE. EVEN A THROUGH AXLE MTB WOULD TAKE SECONDS TO RIP OFF. DON'T BE TEMPTED TO LEAVE YOUR BIKE ON THIS RACK WITHOUT AN EXTRA CABLE OR U-LOCK.

Great rack

Rating:****
I have 2 of these and I really like the way they look on my car and how easy they are to use. When I bought my Specialized Enduro SL with the 20 mm through Axle, I could not use my old bike rack with the fork mount any more. I like that the front arm does not touch the paint at all on my bikes so there is no worries about frame scratches.

Cons. The system does stick up from your car, and theft can be an issue as pointed out in a previous post. I had a problem when switch my second one over to the the drivers side the hinge became very stiff and hard to move. That was fixed with some wd40. I have taken my bike across the country with this bike racks and have never had a problem with it(besides a vala parking attendant in Vail Co wrecking my bike, rack and roof but thats another story.)

Overall one of the quickest racks for putting your bike on your car.

Not too Shabby

Rating:****

BC.com shipping and CS is great, had the rack here in less than 4 days. I wanted the T2 sidearm hitch rack but didn't want to deal with having a hitch put on the car. I have put 6 or 7 bikes on it and they all fit excellent and are very secure on top. I only have two issues with the setup; The sidearm rubs on my fox 40 so I need a piece of pipe insulation on the fork to keep it from getting scratched, the other is I had to dismantle and reassemble to get the arm on the outside of the rack. neither are that big of deal but I put the sidearm back together wrong and don't get full swing on the front. I also wish they could be popped off easily when not in use to reduce drag and bug stiction. I'll probably buy the T2 hitch rack just so my wife doesn't have to struggle to put her DH bike on the top of the Jetta.

Great

Rating:****

These racks are very stiff and solid for bikes. They will work on any bike I have ever tried to put in them. The trays re wide and will take big tires, the trays are also really solid and don't flex at all. These are very easy to use but a little tricky to setup the first time around.

The only real gripe i have with these racks is that you can steal a bike off of them pretty easy. I stole my own bike off of my car in under 20 seconds. I wish they would put a cable lock on these like the Yakima system. Another thing you can do is put the bike on backwards (in most cases some bikes wont do this) and then the bike will be much harder to take off the rack. But locks only keep the honest people out, so just be careful no matter what.

The best choice for roof mounting!

Rating:*****

From my BMX, to road, to DH, this rack holds it and holds it still even at 100MPH. This is the best bike rack for your roof PERIOD! Its fool proof, easy to use, sturdy, and tough. It lasts forever it seems, and doesnt let the bike sway in the wind. This thing assembled super quick and bolted to the roof rack super quick. It is lockable with lockcores easily installed. It would still be easy to steal, but it will slow down a thief. This thing is top notch! Do yourself a favor and get a few. I have 2 currently and working to get a third one on my roof backwards.

Easy goodness

Rating:*****

Thing rack is so money. It ratchets down on your bike in literally less than 10 seconds. It's ridiculously easy to use and super secure, there’s no bike sway—even on dirt roads.

The only negative I can think of: if you have a tall car (e.g., SUV), hoisting your bike up top is going to be a royal pain, especially because you have to balance the bike while raising the arm over the front wheel. But that's really true for any roof bike mount.

Otherwise, tee it up and snag one of these puppies; you won't regret it.

Thule Sidearm

Rating:*****

I've had my Thule Sidearm for about a month now and have used it several times. It is easy to use and it doesn't take long to mount your bike. I've only tried one other bike rack, the Thule Big Mouth, and find the Sidearm easier to use. I have factory installed Yakima aero cross bars on my car, an Isuzu Vehicross, so I had to order another bottom bracket for the rack from Thule so it would fit. There is an aero bar kit you can buy, but the rubberized bottom bracket, Part P, is all I needed.

Great rack system

Rating:****
The rack system works great for transporting bikes of all sizes and weird down tubes. The only thing to watch out for is to make sure the pull down piece clicks into place. On occasion, it will not fully latch on its own and you need to pull out the tap, but its super easy to do so no worries there.

Bike fell off

Rating:**
I have had this rack for a year. It is easy to use and I really liked it until my bike fell off going 65 mph. It was probably caused by user error, but I don't know what I did wrong.

Questionble Safety

Rating:***
I have used this rack for over one year with both my road and mountain bike. The pros: easy to get the bikes on and off, has optional lock accessory for security, fits any bike, locking device stays in its clicked position- no slippage. The Cons: This is a big one- the front tire has jumped out of the rail when using my mountain bike on a bumpy dirt road. This has happened more than once. It might be due to the front fork suspension bouncing on the road and eventually pops out. I lock out the suspension on the fork but it didn't help. Now I add a strap to the tire and the rail. Haven't had a problem since but for the price of the system, this shouldn't happen. There has never been a problem on a paved road. I need a rail for a second bike but will look for one with another system. It's not worth the risk of having my bike spread all over the road.
