Effective Tick Tool

Rating:****
This is a great tool for removing ticks either in the field or back at home. It is good for humans and canines as well. It is surprisingly sturdy, and because of this you have to use it gently. The tendency is to be aggressive and grab a little skin along with the head of the tick and leave a small pinch wound behind, like using a pair of pliers or wire cutters. Just go easy! Ticks are no match for the strength of human hands with pliers.

The jaws open wide, and are thin enough where they meet to get right up against the skin, just under the mouth part of the tick for clean extraction. Even on giant ugly ticks. The white color of the plastic makes it easy to see what you are grabbing. This is a very important feature compared to the dull grey finish of steel tools. Just grab gently and pull up. It's also easy to clean with an alcohol wipe.

The magnifying glass however, is not so useful. This is the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars. It is recessed deeply into the hinge, and has a very narrow field of view. Also, your hand and the body of the tool cast a sizable shadow over the magnifier viewing area making it hard to see without lots of light. Yes, you can use it, but I would just forget about that part and get a cheap plastic magnifier or loupe instead if that's important to you, then you can really inspect your bugs!

I haven't tried it with burrs, leaches or other bugs, but I imagine it would work well for those too. Well, except leeches maybe, which you would just pull off with your fingers (unless it grosses you out). All in all a good tool to have in your kit, and great for those with bigger hands that need something to grab onto, unlike those super miniature tweezers that some kits provide. It's very easy to pluck out those nasty bugs cleanly with this tool. It does the trick with ticks.

Not good for really little bitty ticks

Rating:****
This thing is very well made, and light. I bought it because it seems like it should work really well, and I'd imagine it does on bigger ticks.

But I live in North Carolina, where the majority of ticks I've seen are really, really small, like a little mole on your skin. It's really hard to get the Tick Nipper under the legs of the tick to pull it out to include the head.

I've found the Pro-Tick remover (Item # 407279) works better for me on the little ticks. I haven't had to remove a big tick yet. I've moved about 8 or 10 ticks so far this season (all very small ticks), and I've found the Pro Tick is a little better for that application.

You may have a different experience. Try both and see for yourself; they're not expensive.

Happy camping!

Wonderful, wonderful item

Rating:*****
The Tick Nipper is the most wonderful tick removal device I have ever used. It is quick, effective and minimizes trauma to the victim, whether pet or person. I depend on my tick nippers from spring through fall - big ticks, small ticks, it just scoops em up and off LEAVING THE CRITTER INTACT, and if necessary I can identify the tick through the handy magnifying glass before disposal. I can't say enough good things about this handy tool - every home should have one.

From Lime ticks to huge bloated dog tick

Rating:*****
This is the best way I have found to get rid of ticks especially immature deer ticks. You have the tick out before it even knows it is loosing lunch and fights back. No longer to you have to worry about tick heads having to be dug out of your body with a knife. The whole ticks comes out effortlessly and pain free. A true case of intelligence over brute force.
