Simply the best.

I was introduced to Gookinaide during a circuit of the wonderland trail back in the 80's and I have been using it as my primary liquid replenishment since then.

It is a simple formula designed by a biochemist to exactly replace the salts and sugars that are released in high exertion. No more no less. I agree with the designers view that you dont want more, You want homeostasis and that is what this gives.

Now I train a company of 12 aerialists. I push them to limits that few athletes reach and there are often times where people get shaky from rapid blood sugar loss. Rehearsals are fast and hard. During those peak training times I require them to use Hydralyte as it has the smoothest glucose replenishment of anything out there, the body just calms down and returns to center.

Around the house we also use it for the times when the commute home was a little fast and dinner is a little slow, or other such surprise sugar crashes. I have also started to use it for a recovery drink and it is working surprisingly well for light to medium work outs.

I can not express how much I like this product, it is an honest tool made by a man who really wanted to help fellow athletes. Try some of this when you are really really out there on the edge and like all the rest of the reviewers, you will agree Bill Gookin is a saint!

Best Deal In Sports Drinks

Vitalyte is hands-down the best value in the sports drink industry. I've had the opportunity to participate in beta tests for other (much more expensive) brands, and side-by-side this product performs every bit as well. Each container costs significantly less than comparable products (about half from what I've seen) and yet it makes MORE (sometimes up to twice as much) product.

I've only had the grape flavor, which I loved. It's a very light flavor, just enough that you know it's not water. This stuff goes down easy, too. I can drink down an entire 24oz bottle of this stuff in a few seconds. No chalky, sandy, gritty mess in your bottle (or your mouth), it's as smooth as pure water.

On those days when you just don't feel well, you know you're dehydrated, or are sick - this stuff is great because it gives you hydration and electrolytes you need without making you feel worse. It's kind of a cure-all around my house.

Bottom line: if you're searching for a good all-around energy/electrolyte mix, you've found it. Highly recommended.

I was really sick and was going through heavy treatments for my ovarian problems and he recommended this product to help with my dehydration. IT LITERALLY SAVED MY LIFE! And it got me through the day. Not only did it taste great, but it was great for me. With the almost entire glucose content and sodium/postassium make-up, Vitalyte was exactly what I needed, without all the stuff I didn't need to weigh me down and sit in my stomach. I have been an athlete my whole life and this is by far the most superior product I have ever come across. I am a brand loyalist for life!! It is my mission to tell everyone I can about this product. Thank you Bill Gookin! But, also thank you REI for carrying this product To all who are reading, try it! You won't regret it. Hopefully it will make an impact on your life, as it has on mine. I drink it everyday and will continue for as long as I can. Cheers!!

Try it, you'll like it!

Gookinaide, Hydralyte, Vitalyte....WHATEVER it is is great stuff! My marathon training group used this a few years ago- and by chance I tried it one day. Ever since, I stock up every time I'm in REI.
SO much better than G**aide, probably more akin to their endurance blend. Citrus/orange flavors are light and easy when you just can't stand one more sweet thing in your mouth on a long, hot day. Perfect the day-after major training or events to restore your energy. I read on their web page about drining it when you have a cold or flu and now I do that too! I think my recovery time has significantly decreased.

I wish REI didn't always hide this stuff on the bottom shelf!

Best hydration formula I've used.

This is the best hydration drink I've used. When I'm thirsty after a hard workout or race, nothing tastes better. Other sports drinks I've tried taste sickly sweet after a long hard run. I tend to trust my body, and I think that means something. Vitalyte is designed for performance, not as a soft drink.

I also use it for another purpose. A few years ago, I caught a bad virus and couldn't eat anything for three days straight. Vitalyte was the only thing my stomach could handle, and it got me through. Ever since, I use it to stay hydrated when I get sick.

best wet thing since beer

Best overall electrolyte drink out there, in my experience. I've been using it for years now. The price is less than half of some other drink powders. Clean and crisp (and desireable!) flavors. I most recommend the cool citrus and lemonade flavors - they are the easiest to drink consistently and long-term if you use drink mixes often. While some drink mixes advertise their lack of sugar (and calories), I'm a fan of the moderately sweet taste and the little sugar bump it gives during an adventure. Great performance for workout recovery. Works just as well for alpine climbing as for a hangover, too.

Don't get lost without it

This is the right stuff - forget the ****aids and the other weird colored stuff. Hydralyte gives you the right amount of potassium, sodium and sugars to keep going when you are working hard in a dry environment.

I have been using it for more than 15 years, from the Grand Canyon to peaks in the Rockies to the Sonoara desert and nothing is better.

As with any other sugar-containing drink, make sure you sanitize your equipment as soon as possible after use - a touch of bleach or strong hydrogen peroxide solution does the trick.

Excellent for any age, any sport

My marathon husband loves it, never makes you queasy. My young kids can drink it daily in lunch packs, or for their cross country workouts to hydrate and recover. It's glucose and fructose NOT sugar and artificial colors so I can drink it too, I'm a lymphoma survivor. Cancer loves sugar so I love that I can drink this as part of my recovery without jeapordizing my health. Go Green - no more plastic gatorade or water bottles - re-use your own container, washes out easy. I recommend it to anyone!

light taste & easy to digest during runs

They were handing out Vitalyte at the Surf City Marathon Huntinton Beach, CA. I found it easy to digest so I drank more fluid during the race. Then I found it at REI for half the price of similar products and I was hooked. I actually have the perfect recepie for marathon nutrition now which is adding two scoops of Vitalyte to Gatorade and believe it or not, its still smooth enough and ensures I take in the right amount of replacement nutrition to finish the marathon strong.

Life Saver!

I get very easily dehydrated, and used to drink a particular children's electrolyte replacement beverage to combat my thirst. It worked, but man, that stuff is expensive! Vitalyte works wonders, and it is a fraction of the price. Also, it's nice that it comes as a powder, which makes it extremely portable. I drink it after my daily hikes, or after I swim. It's a great pick-me-up, tastes great, and isn't super sugary like other *ades. I even keep an emergency stash in my first aid kit!

Negative Reviews:

Zesty Orange claims bottles forever!

I personally liked this flavor best, but it permanently ruined a $10 no-odor-no-taste water bottle. It not only stained it orange, it left a permanent orange odor as well. Nothing I tried removed it completely (though isopropanol removed some). None of the other flavors did this, only Zesty Orange. I had bought the smaller 4-serving packets of each flavor, intending to buy the 80-serving container of whichever I liked best; I still bought the large container, but I was forced to choose one of the non-staining flavors that wasn't really my preference.

I contacted Gookinaid about the staining, and they acknowledged the problem, were aware of it and apologized, but refused to reimburse me for the ruined bottle. I was told that the problem was the beta carotene they had added to it FOR COLORING. I would have been more understanding if they had placed a clearly worded caution on the package, but they failed to do even that in spite of being aware of it. Fortunately REI was understanding instead, and replaced the specific bottle (that I had bought there). Thank goodness I didn't try this out in my water bladder.

You've been warned: be prepared to dedicate whatever (plastic) container you put the Zesty Orange flavor in to the exclusive use of it.
