Tough, Rubbery Bag

Rating:****
For the past three years I have used the same small bag to keep my electronics dry during many activities in which I am completely submerged. Sometimes the bag is submerged for great lengths of time. For the past two months I have used it exclusively to keep my mobile and my iPod dry while completing 2+ km open water swims, four to five times each week. The bag is made of a very durable, stretchy, rubberized material that resists wear at places that are repeatedly folded or poked. The seal is a very fine double seal and it is a bit finicky. If you do not overload the bag and take care while both closing and opening the seal, then the bag should last for many years. Be sure to expel as much air as possible prior to sealing the bag. I find the bags a bit short for their width and I would like to see them a bit taller.

Worth the cost

Rating:*****
I've used this product for several years. To protect electronics (cell, P&S digital camera, etc), for a self made personal first aid kit. The bags are strong and I've yet to have one fail. I use them in my day bag for my emergency kit supplies and while in another bag .. they get mashed and banged around ... always airtight and well sealed. Like any ziplock the seal has to be done right but not that complicated. Squeeze out the air first of course. I question the one star review on this item. They are definitely not a glorified ziplock bag and I've yet to have one fail. You might be able to rip it's seams if you try to rip it open and stress the seams when open ... after all it's a plastic bag. But I've found them excellent. They also have other products you might want to check out on their web page.

Better than a ziploc if closed well

Rating:****
I double bag electronics with a silica gel packet, first in an Aloksac and then into an Aquapac. Unlike a dry box, the cell phone remains usable.

Just as with a ziploc, there is some technique to closing them. I find it best to remove as much air as possible and check it is really closed.

Never had a failure, unlike ziploc bags.

Very useful

Rating:****
We used these bags on our honeymoon in Maui and were able to keep our car key with a built in electronic remote dry when in the water for hours at a time. The smallest bag held the above item and was able to fit into the key pocket of my husband's swim trunks.

Waste of money

Rating:*
These packs are just glorified zip-lock bags. Forget the marketing hype about these being "Navy certified" and "patented technology", they just don't work very well. The first problem is that when sealed, they open with even the slightest pressure, even by just squeezing the two ends together. It gets really annoying when things start spilling out because the seal was so weak. The second problem is that like zip-lock bags, the seal occasionally detaches from the bag itself, presenting a permanent hole at the top and rendering the bag useless. I expect this to happen with sandwich bags from time to time because they're disposable and cheap, but these Aloksak bags are expensive and I would expect that not to happen. It happened within two days of using the bags even when opening them gently every time. I can't recommend this to anyone who needs to rely on the contents being secure, sealed and dry. Instead I would recommend a double-sealed zip-lock bag for a 1/10th of the price; these have been 100% reliable for me.

Stuck together on the inside!

Rating:**
I stored these bags in my kayak bag over the winter (unused) and when I went to use them this summer for kayaking, they were stuck together on the inside. When I emailed the company about the problem, I received this answer: "The only time the aLOKSAK will adhere to itself is if you left them in very high temperatures for long periods of time. The disclaimer that came with your products has a warning, DO NOT EXPOSE TO EXTREME HEAT."
I did not leave them in extreme heat and I do not remember any warning on the package; but of course I do not still have the packaging to see if there is anything there. I probably won't purchase these again, since they were pretty expensive and now they are not really usable because of the inside sticking to itself.
The idea is great, but it needs some refinement and the company could be more helpful.

Not waterproof for this diver

Rating:*
I used these bags several times while i was scuba diving up to 130 ft. 1. even when properly zipped and double bagged, sometimes there was water in the inside bag. at other times, however, only one bag would work ok. because of this unpredictability i won't use them for diving anymore. 2. the zip seal is difficult to close properly and requires some time and close attention. 3. with repeated use, the seam between the zip seal section and the rest of the bag might separate and the bag becomes unsealable. it is uncertain after how many uses separation will happen. not knowing that, a new bag could conceivably be used every time[...]
