One bolt short of perfect

Rating:****

The only problem with the bighorn is that it is attached to the hitch with a threaded bolt. This is time consuming the put on, and often the bolt shakes itself loose when driving on rough dirt roads. Yakima did make the threaded receiver removable but depending on the exact size of your hitch using a standard hitch pin makes the rack too shaky. Other than that, it is the easiest and cheapest way to get four bikes on your car. It is super fast to load and unload bikes. I would highly recommend buying the lock system with this rack.

"Secure Rack...wish it folded down!?!?!"

Rating:****
This rack is great for what I use it for. I do a lot of mountain biking and travel on tough roads to get there and it holds the bikes fine! The only problem I have with is that it doesn't fold down. Unless you are going to keep using it day in and day out...or on a long trip this is probably not a rack you will leave on the back of your car constantly. It is just really bulky and sticks out, because it won't fold down! OVERALL, Still a great rack!

Yakima Bighorn Rack

Rating:*****

The rack was easy to install and the swing down feature is nice to have. It's easy to get into the back of my Durango. I was a little worried about that before buying the rack. You guys were great. Lowest price and free shipping that arrived very, very quickly. I appreciate that. Will look to you guys in the future for other purchases.

This Rack Rocks!

Rating:*****

For the money spent this rack does exactly what I would want. Nothing fancy to it, just a rack to hold 4 bikes and take you wherever your mood takes you. It only took minutes to assemble and once again backcountry.com got it to me within 48 hours of ordering. For a GREAT rack I suggest the BigHorn 4.

"great solid rack"

Rating:*****
this is down right the best hitch rack i have ever seen! first off it locks in the receiver very tight and snug with their bolt in style holding it tight (just need to keep a 7/8 wrench in the truck of somewhere). and i can mount 4 bikes on it without them rubbing and scraping each other.

sturdy piece of equipment

Rating:****

I love this rack, it works so much better than a roof rack in that i dont have to disassemble my bike, and when i roll up somewhere i am ready to ride.

I carries 4 road bikes fine, but i can only manage to squeeze 3 mountain bikes. Still a great rack for the price

I'm happy with it

Rating:****

This is my first trailer hitch rack. Easy to assemble. This rack is certainly made for adult male bikes. I was able to get my two young daughters' bikes and one of their friend's bike onto the rack with some puzzle-solving adjustments. Over-all happy with the rack. I would get it again.

Mounting

Rating:****

The carrier is a good addition. I did have a problem mounting it to my 2004 4Runner. The 2" mount fits perfectly with the exception of 1" that sticks through into the spare tire. I had to re-engineer the mount to fit so my spare tire could stay in place.

"Wear your skid-lid when near it just in case, it may bite back."

Rating:*****
It's mean, tough and takes a bashing. Could've been designed by John Wayne it's that good. Plus it's so menacing it keeps those bumper-kissing drivers at 12 feet, even more with a quick flick of brake light. Plus the main bar is wide enough to take my MooseJaw sticker.

"Form and funtion is great"

Rating:*****
This does the job. keeps the bikes from thrashing each other. The rack is stable. I've gone off road and it worked great. Take note that your car will now look like a Moose so be carefull out there.

Negative Reviews:

Why the hard plastic?

Rating:**

Rack is easy to slide into the hitch and does fit in there a little loosely, but the threaded bolt holds it in well. Adds about 15 seconds to the installation time. A little difficult to get the bikes on the rack because of the anti-sway cradles; again adds about 10 seconds to getting the bikes on...

But my beef is with the make of the cradles themselves. What is with the hard plastic? I scratched my brand new bike in 3 places (the 2 top-tube cradles and the seat-tube anti-sway cradle) using this rack. The straps are rubber and stretch, which is good because I am forced to put a shop-rag between the bike and the cradle to prevent further scratching...

Get the comparable Thule, the cradles are rubber(they also fit a bigger diameter tube), so your bike wont get scratched up.

It's ok

Rating:**

I have some custom painted Electra bikes and took them to Florida this Memorial day. The rack is very sturdy, but gettin 4 bikes on without damaging or scratching them is impossible for me. I noticed that when you put them in the support clips that they would slip a little and even when I spaced them out I would stop to get gas and they had slid together. I have an idea that I am wanting to work on to remedy this problem. It is a little loose in the hitch as well.

Your website rocks! Yakima..not so much.

Rating:***

You guys went out of their way to fix a problem with delivery. You rock! But now that I've had it...wishing I went with a different option on a rack. Not sure if the problem is the rack or the hitch but either the hitch is too short...or the rack is too long. Had to use a metal grinder to make it fit. not that it fits (length wise)...it still wiggles side to side a bit more than I think is safe. Guess i'll have to use straps to secure it....

"one thumb up?"

Rating:***
Good bang for the buck. Only problem is my family all have to own bikes with goofy style frames, grr.......so ya have to get the top tube adapter for some of them. From now on everyone gets traditional framed mens bikes (including the girls) and it'll work like a champ. Overall a good product as usual from Yakima.
