Beautiful Rack

Rating:****
This is a great looking rack that is very ergonomic. We have a class III hitch that this rack fits into through the use of an included adapter. The adapter makes it a little more difficult to get it in the hitch. A bolt secures the rack to the hitch and does a good job stabilizing it. The rack is very ergonomic and had two adjustments that can be made through red latches. The first allows the rack to swing down to allow access to your vehicle. I would not recommend doing this with the rack loaded. This mechanism also allows for a significant amount of play making the rack unstable while driving. The rack is often swinging back and forth and side to side. The second latch allows the rack to take up minimal space and works well.

Attaching bikes is a snap as long as they have standard frames. Mountain bikes, kids bikes, and other frame types prove to be more difficult. The mechanisms to attach the bikes do hold well and secure the bikes fairly well. Bungee cords are recommended to finish securing the bikes to the rack.

Loved the integrated anti-sway cradles!

Rating:****
With a now 5-bike family, transporting all of them became a real challenge. Yakima stepped in nicely to fit the bill. We had utmost confidence in Yakima products, and were happy to turn to them for a new hitch-mount bike rack. Integrated anti-sway cradles, simple release/fold down mechanisms and logical installation made it perfect for our family. Unfortunately, due to a manufacturing snafu, we received a 4-bike sized rack with 5 cradles instead of a 5-bike sized one in our box. With a bit of research, an online consultation with Yakima, [...]we've received a correctly assembled unit in no time. We (especially our kids) are delighted!

"Love it!"

Rating:*****
Received the Yakima Doubledown 5 bike rack on schedule and in excellent condition. UPS pre-paid return option was included, that's awesome. Thanks for the chocolate treat. Love the sarcastic sense of humor. I would prefer 48 hours turn around, rather than 120 hours. Best Regards, Your Customer from KALIFOURNIA (BTW, Governator has formally changed the spelling of CA.)

Childrens bikes

Rating:****
Be warned, if you have small womans or childrens bikes, you may have trouble installing on this rack. You will need to purchase the Yakima TubeTop "you can purchase them on this site". Other than that, all around great rack.

Very Important!! Make sure you tighten the bolt in the hitch. If you do not it will sway.

Double Down 5

Rating:***

I did load 5 bikes on it. As I expected, I loosened and turned some headsets to get all five on it.

I like using the rack for short trips, one hour or less, with the mini-van.

I have used it for 5-hour plus trips with five bikes. At times, I held my breath or felt my stomach in my throat when I encountered dips in the Interstate, like you see at bridges. At those times, the rack would swing up.

My bikes were held secure and not scratched or rubbed. I did think the rack sagged in the hitch when five bikes were loaded.

I used to borrow the previous generation Double Down 5 from a friend. To me, it was a better hitch rack: it did not sag or swing up on dips.

swings like crazy

Rating:***

I bought this rack for my Tundra.
Possitive: easy installations, fits 5 bikes ( i tried 4 thus far) I have to removed the seats to make it right.
Tilt down for truck bed access.

Negative: expensive, swings like crazy, I felt like it will break apart on a bump. It survived my 5 hr round trip to a lake. I thought it not supposed to swing that much. I expect it to rattle a bit but not this bad.
I am lazy to pack and return it. I don't feel safe nor satisfied with the purchase. I reccommend buying it at a local store and try it and return if you don't like. Others said that the older model is better.

Not all it is advertised to do

Rating:***
We tried to put 5 bikes on the rack and found that if 1 bike is designed for an adult Female rider, you can not carry 5 bikes but only 4 due to the way you have to put the 1 bike on. It will hold 4 bikes very well but the fifth bike I'm not so sure.
