Yakima Gunwale Brackets Reviews:

Positive Reviews:

Your Canoe Will Never Move!

I was skeptical at first about this product. After through testing, I have come to the conclusion that Yakimas Gunwale Brackets are bombproof. Like all of Yakima's products, this is a bit pricey. But I drove roughly 550miles from southern california to northern california hitting speeds of up to 90mph(ok, maybe a little faster...) with a 40mph cross wind through the Los Angeles mountains...the area known for flipping semi truck trailers on the freeway. My 16' 75lbs fiberglass Seda Canoe never moved(ok, so it started to vibrate but at those speeds, come on!). Drove it through mountain roads for about 20 miles while cornering at .9Gs according to the G-Force meter. Even with the vehicle sliding in and out of turns the canoe never budged. I don't think I needed to secure the bow and stern of my canoe but a little extra security never hurts;) Also strapped it to the truck and took it down some rain beaten fire roads bumpy enough to knock my teeth loose and the canoe still didn't move! During and after all three of these 'tests' I checked the straps and brackets and they were as tight as when I first set off on my trip.

Simply put, 60 bucks for these Yakima gunwale brackets is better then losing the thousand plus dollar canoe you just bought.

good product

just installed and transported a canoe today for the first time. the brackets provided good seating for the canoe and the straps locked it down to the rack. it took about an hour to install the brackets and strap down the canoe, but it was my first time so i triple checked everything before hitting the road. the only issue was placement of brackets on front bar with the fairing, but slight movement of the fairing solved the problem.

Pricey, but they work

I've probably driven the equivalent mileage of around the world more than once with two canoes on top of my vehicle. Gunwale brackets are almost indespensible to keep your boats from slewing back and forth from crosswinds and truck wash. The only issue I have is the price ([$] for enough brackets for 2 boats), but all of Yakima's (and Thule's) rack gear is expensive. However, their stuff does work well and lasts a long time.

Incredibily versatile and stable

I have used these for my canoe for years and there is nothing better. Recently I brought my daughter home from college and I mounted her twin bed boxspring on the rack and secured it with these brackets and four straps, two lengthwise and two crosswise. It was very secure.

Yakima Gunwale Brackets

We use to transport our 16' canoe to the Holston and Little Rivers for fishing. Snuggly holds the canoe on. Easy to get the canoe on and off. Stays on the roof rack 365 days a year.

Negative Reviews:

Dissappointed in Yakima Gunwale bracket

I have used Yakima Product for years with no problem and have had gunwale brackets in the past which performed flawlessly. These I received as a christmas gift and used them for the first time to hall my 22' Mad River Canoe from Leadville Colorado to Big Bend Texas. I encountered strong cross winds from Santa Fe, New Mexico to Roswell and had to repeatedly stop for adjustments. One Gunwale bracket was completely crushed from the wind shearing and all of the brackets continued to slide on the bar even though they were completely tight. The construction of the gunwale brackets is flimsy at best and needs to be strengthened.

I hope REI will honor an exchange.

Great brackets, junk strap

These brackets are nicely finished and easy to adjust and use. The included straps have a really nice padded surround on the buckle, but the buckle itself is totally unsafe. It feels secure, but very easily releases suddenly even when you hold the cam hard against the strap when tightening. Very unsafe compared to our favorite brand.
